Chapter 157: It Can’t Be...

Mu Yuze felt his blood run cold as inexplicable dread surged inside his chest.

He recalled how He Juan’s name had appeared on the crime scene of the 510 murder case. Until the end, this point could not be explained clearly as the one who wrote it was already buried three feet underground.

As if it still was not enough, right now... they had a victim who was addicted to AX–03 and He Juan ended up in such a miserable state due to AX–03 as well. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

Why? What was with this situation? Juan-gege clearly did not have anything to do with these two cases, but why... why was he always being dragged in one way or another?

Mu Yuze could imagine how the situation would go once the police caught wind of it. He Juan would once again be invited to the Bureau under the suspicion of being a junkie. And even though they could not find any evidence, the root of doubt had been planted in their hearts and prompted them to pay more attention to He Juan from now on. After all, what were the odds that the police would bump into the same innocent passerby during two cases in a row?

Back then, he remembered feeling doubtful about the smooth progress of the case. Because for some reason, he had a hunch that the real mastermind intended to manipulate it in the way that pushed He Juan under the police’s radar. However, he had discarded that thought as he felt like he had been too paranoid. But now that this kind of accident happened, it looked like there was some truth to it...

To push XIU, who had been missing for seven years, under the police’s nose again and again; the only one who had the motive to do this was... XIU’s enemy!

Once Mu Yuze sorted out the string of events in his mind, he got chills running down his spine and his scalp tingled in fear. Who... who was it that wanted to harm Juan-gege? He knew that XIU had a lot of enemies back in his heyday, but... how did they find him after all of these years?!

He had no idea. There was so much he did not know about what happened that year, and the only one who could answer his doubt was...

His penetrating gaze landed on Jia Molei. He clenched his fists and tried to keep his voice as steady as possible. Though there were thousands of questions on the tip of his tongue, in the end he could only ask, "How... did he get drugged by AX–03?"

Jia Molei looked like he would rather be anywhere than here. "It’s a long story..."

"You can make it short." Mu Yuze did not spare him any mercy. He had had enough... he really had had enough of being kept in the dark. Back then, he was really powerless to do anything for He Juan, but it was different now. He had grown up, and he could protect his Juan-gege well. Mu Yuze’s tone dropped in warning when he saw Jia Molei being all fidgety. "I warn you. You must have known what I can do, right?"

Jia Molei’s face abruptly sank. Fuck... this little brat was threatening him! Of course he knew that Mu Yuze’s identity as a police officer was a hidden danger. Just with one call, he would be able to summon a horde of police officers here. He just did not expect this omega to use his position as a bargaining chip!

Gnashing his teeth, his eyes wandered until they landed on the small door on the corner of the room. He pointed at it, "We have ten to fifteen minutes until we can test if the tranquilizer have any effect on He Juan. Let’s talk there."

Mu Yuze nodded and briskly followed Jia Molei through the door. They entered a cramped space that was similar to a resting lounge. There was a table, a tall locker, a small sofa, sleeping bags as well as empty packages of potato chips strewn around. This monitor room ought to be guarded 24/7 in case the patients in the special ward would enter an emergency state all of a sudden. And hence, this small lounge was built in order to accomodate the nurses’ needs.

Mu Yuze knew why Jia Molei would need this private space to talk to him. He had just wanted to close the door behind him when a tall and broad figure slipped in agilely through the gap of the door.

"Look at what kind of state I’ve gotten myself into," Su Xieren appealed with a helpless look on his face. "At least, I deserve to know what’s going on with da-ge, right?"

Mu Yuze glanced at Jia Molei and saw a speechless look on his face. The crimson-haired Beta grabbed his hair and let out a muffled keen noise from his throat before he managed to compose himself. With his breathing uneven, he beckoned to them impatiently. "Just... just come in. Hurry up and close the door behind you!"

Su Xieren nodded and conscientiously moved to guard the door.

Jia Molei’s sharp gaze snapped to Mu Yuze. Now that nobody was around, he did not bother to hide his murderous intent. He growled out in warning. "If you dare to expose this matter to the police—"

"Who drugged him?" Mu Yuze was too impatient to wait for Jia Molei to finish his threat. "Don’t bother trying to lie to me or say that this is all a coincidence. I know that the only ones who can do something to him are his enemies."

"You..." Jia Molei sputtered, confusion and panic rising on his eyes. "What are you talking about? What enemies can He Juan have..."

If the situation had not been so horrible, Mu Yuze would have been tempted to record this flabbergasted look on Jia Molei’s face. He was certain that it was not everyday that someone could catch him utterly off guard. Alas, Mu Yuze was not in the mood to play around right now.

He could feel irritation and irk surging rapidly in his chest, making his eyes red. Without any warning, he grabbed Jia Molei’s collar and gritted out, his voice shaking, "I... have always known who he is..." He finally revealed the fact that nobody knew but himself. He could see utter shock in Jia Molei’s eyes but he couldn’t care less about it. What consumed his mind right now was this desperate need to protect He Juan and hide him from the whole world.

Mu Yuze’s jaws clenched as he continued, "I know who he is... and I will always stand by his side. Always. So you don’t need to hide anything from me. Please, I..." his voice cracked in the end and his grip on Jia Molei trembled. "I have to know who wants to harm him!"

Jia Molei stared at him with a stumped look as if it was the first time he had ever seen him. But then as he looked into Mu Yuze’s bloodshot and desperate eyes, something seemed to flash through his mind. And it shocked him down to the core.

"Wait... wait a moment." He shook Mu Yuze’s grip off him, took a step back and grabbed onto his spinning head. His stare on Mu Yuze’s face was almost scorching as if wishing to drill a hole straight through his brain. The shock was too much that he stumbled over his words. "You... Wait a fucking second. It can’t be... You are... that wild cub? That scrawny... that scrawny little brat who used to follow He Juan around like a little tail?!"
