Chapter 152: Golden Sand

Since Mu Yuze had cut off the interrogation room’s surveillance in the first place, they could only communicate with each other through the earpiece. Li Zhi and Captain Rong had discussed it earlier and agreed that they’d better take some drastic measures against traitors – even though it was the last thing they had ever wanted. Nonetheless, the nature of their job compelled them to be prepared for the worst case scenario.

In case there was really a spy among the police, they did not wish to leave behind any surveillance footage that could put Wu Yuan’s life in danger, and this live conversation would only be heard by a handful of trusted officers who handled the case.

Mu Yuze would be responsible for extorting information and inspecting Wu Yuan’s body language on-site, whereas the others would support him behind the scenes. So far, Li Zhi could tell that the terror and fear in Wu Yuan’s tone was genuine. Even without looking he could already imagine what kind of a mess Wu Yuan had turned himself into. And even though Wu Yuan’s statement sounded quite peculiar, he felt like... the child was really telling the truth this time.

But when all was said and done, compared to Tak Jung-Hwa who had gone on many dangerous missions across the border, dealt with the most vicious criminals and even fought XIU head-on, Li Zhi thought that his experience was still severely lacking. Thus, he could not resist seeking Tak Jung-Hwa for advice.

"Hmm..." Tak Jung-hwa narrowed his eyes, seemingly lost in thought. He deliberated for a second before saying, "I have no idea if everyone has heard of this drug before. It is first circulated among the triads in Myanmar. In terms of causing hallucination, it is quite similar to cocaine and LSD, but there is a special characteristic to this drug that makes it unique. Hearsay... it can cause people to lose their memory."

Captain Rong was stunned. As the leader of the Narcotics Division, there was no way he did not know about this. "Are you talking about Golden Sand? But isn’t it said that the raw material is so rare and expensive that the production has been stopped? Moreover, it has only been spotted in Myanmar, hasn’t it?"

The drug was named Golden Sand due to its appearance. It came in the form of powder and when put under the sunlight, it would sparkle and twinkle like gold. Beautiful, charming yet deadly at the same time. It was stated in the official report that the hallucinogenic effect of this drug was so potent that a simple suggestion could cause someone to forget even the most important thing to them.

No matter how deep the sorrow or despair was, once you consumed this drug, then you would be able to forget everything – without fail. Furthermore, it was traceless. That’s why some people refer to this drug as ’Pill of Forgetfulness’. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

It was unfortunate that the price for even half a gram was exorbitant as hell and not many people could afford it even if they sold their organs. The small demand could not keep up with the cost of production. Nobody wanted to do non-profitable business when there were a lot of cheaper drugs with similar effects and hence, the drug slowly disappeared from the face of the public.

But now that Tak Jung-hwa had suddenly brought it up...

"Do you think that it is Golden Sand that has messed with Wu Yuan’s memory?" Captain Rong’s brows creased, skeptical. If Tak Jung-hwa had not been a capable and senior officer, Captain Rong would have rebuked him for entertaining such a foolish idea.

For starters, the drug had ceased to be heard a few years ago and the most explosive news at that time stated that Myanmar’s anti-drug enforcement officers had successfully confiscated whatever small amount remained within the country. Reasonably speaking, the possibility that it would appear in China right now and be consumed by this skinny teenager who was still wet behind the ears was... close to none.

"I know." Tak Jung-hwa did not take offense to Captain Rong’s obvious doubt and showed a good-natured smile. "It’s just that Wu Yuan’s condition really reminded me of the drug’s side effects and that’s why I can’t help but mention it in passing. As for Wu Yuan..." he reasoned with a clear and unhurried tone. "I agree with Captain Li Zhi. He doesn’t sound like he is lying. Don’t judge by how the evidence on the crime scene only showed the presence of two people. Don’t you think you have overlooked one last possibility?"

Captain Li Zhi’s heart thumped as a certain understanding flashed through his eyes. "You mean to say..."

"That’s right. If Wu Yuan is not lying, then there is a huge possibility that we are fighting against a very skillful, meticulous and experienced criminal who can come and go without leaving a trace at all." Tak Jung-hwa’s thin lips curved and his peach blossom eyes glittered with intrigue. He muttered under his breath, "Interesting... every case here is so interesting..."

If everyone in the control room heard his last sentence, perhaps they would vomit out blood due to anger. They did not ask for this kind of ’interesting’ cases, okay?! Wasn’t it better if their country was peaceful without any conflicts whatsoever? It was only this month that strange cases started to emerge one after another like poisonous mushrooms after humid rain!

On the other hand, as soon as Li Zhi heard the first half of Tak Jung-hwa’s sentence, his heart gave a jolt and he abruptly recalled the mechanic who was supposed to fix the elevator in the 510 murder case. Strangely, the man had gone missing and the police were unable to track him down until now. It was like he had vanished from the face of Earth...

Li Zhi’s line of thought was broken when Kang Guanyu asked curiously beside him. "Jung-hwa Hyung, it looks like you know quite a lot about Golden Sand. Have you gone on a mission in Myanmar before?"

Tak Jung-hwa blinked and he let out a brief laugh. His eyes glinted in a sharp light, exuding a charming yet dangerous aura. "Little junior, your questions have always caught me off guard." He nodded in acquiescence to Kang Guanyu’s innocent inquiry and his smile gained a sharper edge to it. "That’s right. Coincidentally, the mission I went to had something to do with Golden Sand. And guess who I met there?"

The bloodthirsty aura Tak Jung-hwa was exuding caused Kang Guanyu to shrink his neck a bit and scoot behind Li Zhi’s back. He only popped his head out and guessed timidly, "Is it... XIU?"

Tak Jung-hwa had only shown this kind of reaction when he was talking about his lifelong nemesis – XIU – so it was not difficult for Kang Guanyu to make the inference.

Sure enough, Tak Jung-hwa gave him a playful wink and exclaimed cheerfully. "Bingo! My mission was to intercept a major drug deal between Myanmar’s triads and Xuanlong. And it was also during that mission when I fought XIU and almost lost my life."

As if water had been splashed into a pot of boiling oil, the control room instantly erupted in an uproar.

Xuanlong had always been a controversy for them due to their ruthless act which was toeing around the line of crime yet seemed to benefit ordinary citizens. In the previous murder case, Xuanlong’s name had popped up as the accomplice in the child trafficking channel and now, it was also involved in drug distribution?!

’Xuanlong’ – this name had slowly ceased to be heard since their destruction seven years ago but now... they unexpectedly heard it during two cases in a row! Was it only a coincidence or...
