Chapter 145: Old Friend

BOOM!

What followed thereafter was an ear-deafening crash, the shattering sounds of glass and excruciating pain that seemed to tear his mind apart. He Juan let out a breathless gasp as everything in front of him went dark, and it was only through sheer willpower that he was able to crack his eyes open again.

Through his hazy vision, he found that the front hood of the car had crashed into a wall of rocky hill, causing small pebbles and soil to fall on the roof like the extremely wild and chaotic beat of a drum. Cobwebs crack spread across the windscreen. A faint sizzling sound came from the engine and the pungent scent of oil assaulted his nose.

He Juan remained in a daze for a few seconds, unable to differentiate whether he was still trapped inside his memory or somewhere else. The words he had said with his own mouth still lingered in his ears. ’Let’s die together’? Who was he saying it for? Under what circumstances would he say something like that to another person...?

It was not until he sensed an abrupt movement from the side that he was brought out of his trance. Still muddled, he slowly turned his head and saw Jia Molei raising his head from where he had been laying on the steering wheel, blood pouring down his forehead and drenched half of his face in no time at all.

Jia Molei let out a faint groan and the first thing he did was to check on He Juan. He pressed two fingers on He Juan’s neck and scanned him with an anxious gaze, "He Juan, can you hear me? Talk to me! Hey!!"

He Juan’s body was cold, so cold. And stiff. As though his organs had begun to wither and turned him into a half-corpse. He stared at Jia Molei blankly as if he had no idea what the man was talking about. It was like there was a layer of bubbles around him and caused all the voices to turn into jumbled noises before it could reach his ears.

Jia Molei did not wait for his response and made a split second decision. "Fuck, let’s go! Let’s get out of the car first!"

He Juan maintained his position even when Jia Molei staggeringly jumped down from the car, jogged to his side and opened the door to haul him out of the seat. It was not until the chilly wind enveloped him that He Juan realized his entire body was soaked in cold sweat. Not only that, he was also trembling so hard he could barely find the strength to stand.

In an instant, like a bursting dam, all of the sensory nerves in his body fought to transmit the delayed waves of pain to his brain. He Juan let out a groan and doubled over and it was only with Jia Molei’s grip that he could remain standing. His entire body ached so badly that he could no longer ascertain where the source of the pain came from.

Droplets of water fell onto his body as the gloomy sky abruptly opened up in a faint drizzle, causing the temperature to lower even more.

"He Juan!" Jia Molei had no choice but to let He Juan lean against the car. He slapped He Juan’s cheeks a few times, trying to make his vacant pupils regain their focus again. "Hey, talk to me! Snap out of it, He Juan!"

A particularly harsh slap sent his face flying to the side and He Juan tasted blood from where he had accidentally bit into the inside of his cheeks. When he saw that Jia Molei was going to deliver another slap, he mustered every drop of his strength to swat that paw away. "Damn you, Molei..." his voice was so small and rough as though scraped out of his throat, tinged with a hint of exasperation.

"Old Juan...!" Jia Molei was so relieved that the grip he had on He Juan tightened, almost making the latter crumple in another surge of pain. Seeing his collapsing appearance, Jia Molei sensibly lightened his hold and asked awkwardly. "Oh... sorry there. Did I hurt you?"

He Juan spat out the blood inside his mouth and his entire person was simply speechless when he heard this question. If he had not known any better, he would have thought that Jia Molei was seizing the advantage to beat him up in the name of remedy in exchange for all the trouble He Juan had caused him all these years.

Resisting the burning pain on his skull, he straightened up and grimaced when the muscles on his waist and thighs were pulled taut. He reckoned that the last collision must have bruised his body black and blue. "Where are we...?" He had no idea what happened during the last moment. But when he looked around now, he could see that their car had crashed onto the mountain cliff side whereas the other car...

The Land Rover had broken through the guardrail and landed on the bottom of the cliff with its body turned upside down, its four wheel still spinning wildly in midair.

Jia Molei let out a disdainful snort when he saw He Juan’s shocked expression. "Heh... if they want to compete with me in terms of racing skills, then they have to practice for 800 more years! Wait for me here!" He patted He Juan’s shoulder and without giving any chance for He Juan to react, he rushed toward the broken guardrail. Gripping onto the hanging metal, he slowly lowered himself down the cliff.

He Juan’s eyes flew wide in shock. Before he knew it, he could not see Jia Molei any longer. Pulse leaping to his throat, He Juan disregarded his doctor’s instruction and ran to the guardrail as well.

"Molei!" His voice shook when he saw Jia Molei agilely sliding down the cliff toward the overturned car. Fear arose from the bottom of his heart. "What are you doing?! Get back here!"

"I’m going to see who this motherfucker is!" Jia Molei shouted back to him. "Don’t move around as you please. I will come back after beating some sense into this son of a bitch!"

He Juan did not even register that the rain had gradually turned into a harsh downpour, drenching him from head to toe. His eyes were fixed on Jia Molei’s figure, even his breathing slowed in response. The rapidly lowering temperature sent him shivering from head to toe, white mists floating out of his mouth with every exhale he let out.

He watched as Jia Molei inched closer to the driver seat with wary movement, then after confirming that the person inside was motionless, he held onto the handle and yanked the already crumpled metal door apart.

"Molei—!" He Juan’s voice was lost amid the booming strike of thunder, trembling in dread and terror.

In that exact moment when Jia Molei was holding onto the scrap door, He Juan saw their attacker rolled out from the car with a speed that was almost impossible to be caught with naked eyes, his movement precise and sharp. Without a second delay, that person pounced on Jia Molei like a cheetah and pressed him down to the ground with the metal door between them. In his hand was a gun which he was pressing against Jia Molei’s forehead.

Click.

The sound of the trigger being released echoed terrifyingly clear in their ears.

"Don’t move," that person said with an extremely hoarse and cold voice. It sounded surprisingly youthful, yet the apathy in his voice was enough to send chills down their spine. "Or this bullet will go through your skull in the next second. You know that I am not the kind of person who likes to joke around, don’t you?"

Jia Molei froze amidst his struggle, his eyes widening in shock when he registered who it was.

Before the notion of ’Molei knows this person’ could even settle in He Juan’s mind, the man in black overalls suddenly raised his head and their gazes collided amidst the hazy curtain of raging rain and flashes of lightning.

His cap had been lost somewhere during the crash and his entire appearance was exposed to He Juan’s eyes. Wet dark-colored hair was plastered on his pale face and his eyes were akin to a clear ocean – brilliant blue. He Juan sucked in cold air as shock jolted through his heart.

This face... other than his younger age, it was almost identical to the foreigner who had been standing together with He Juan in Miss Zhao’s stack of evidence!

"XIU..." the man’s eyes curved upward slightly and his tone gained a hint of warmth as though he was addressing an old friend. If only the enmity in his eyes were not so obvious. "Nice to meet you again. How does it feel to forget everything and live peacefully for the past seven years?"
