Chapter 143: Sit Tight

Jia Molei adjusted the rearview mirror and drove out of the City Bureau. As he maneuvered through the desolate street, he cast He Juan a glance and tsk-ed lightly. "I didn’t expect you, of all people, would get angry at him."

"It’s a misunderstanding..." He Juan murmured under his breath.

But was it really a misunderstanding though? He Juan could tell that Mu Yuze’s terrified demeanor back then was genuine, yet he did not seem to be lying either when he stated that there was nothing between him and that Alpha at all. So... which one was the truth?

However, as long as Mu Yuze gave him the word... as long as he looked He Juan in the eye and firmly declared that it was nothing, He Juan was willing to toss this little nagging doubt to the back of his mind. Thinking up to here, He Juan could not help but let out a helpless chuckle. Goodness... he was really a goner, wasn’t he? He rubbed his forehead and traced the horizontal scar with the tip of his fingers while feeling amused inside his heart.

"What the hell are you laughing at?" Jia Molei asked in a strange tone.

"Nothing," He Juan leaned against the seat and heaved out a drawn-out sigh as he told Jia Molei in a wistful tone, "I’ve just realized how head over heels I am... Why do I like him so much? What should I do, Molei? I feel like I’m going to become those idiots in your evening TV shows who are willing to become a slave for love..."

Jia Molei looked at him as if he was looking at a mentally deficient child. If not for their running car and the fact that murder was a legal crime, He Juan had a hunch that Jia Molei was very tempted to open the door and chucked him out of the car right now. Fortunately in the end, no murder occurred inside this car and Jia Molei simply acted as if he heard nothing at all.

"How the fuck did you end up in a police station again?" He asked in an exasperated tone. "You didn’t happen to tour around here for your date, did you?"

"No..." He Juan finally recalled how Jia Molei had immediately rushed here upon hearing the news, and his heart felt soft and warm all over. As expected, this man was only tough on the surface but inside, he was made of sugar and cotton candy. He Juan’s eyes curved as he told the other, "Thank you, Molei... for coming to get me. For being here with me."

Alas, if there was one trait about Jia Molei that He Juan truly wanted to complain about, then it was his inability to accept gratitude. He watched as visible shudders ran through Jia Molei’s body and he shot He Juan a glare filled with disgust, "Fucking stop that right now! You’re going to make my teeth fall out!" As if it was not enough, he even rolled up his sleeves and showed He Juan his muscular arm. "Don’t you see how my hair is all standing up ’cause of how sappy you are?!"

He Juan: "..." Alright, he should have seen this coming.

He Juan’s smile faded and was replaced with a serious look. He finally resumed to tell Jia Molei what had been cut off from their call earlier. "Something happened to my student, Wu Yuan. You remember him, right? Tonight, he..."

As he spoke, Jia Molei’s gaze was firmly fixed on the road in front of him. The only sign that he was listening was the deepening furrow of his brows.

He Juan let out a heavy sigh as he rubbed his face roughly. "I feel like I owe him. A lot. I told him that I would help him but..." he showed a bitter smile. "Look at how terrible the situation is now. I can’t even see him and make sure he’s okay..."

"Okay, stop right there." Jia Molei suddenly cut him off. Just as He Juan thought he was going to get a little comfort from his bestie, he was yelled at instead. "I fucking can’t understand how your brain is working. Just a few weeks ago, you’re moping because you couldn’t save Su Xieren’s girlfriend and now, you’re moping again because you can’t save your damn student?!" He snorted with full power to express his disdain. "Who the hell do you think you are, He Juan? Mother Teresa? Superman? Or do you think you’re an immortal who has the responsibility to take on the suffering of every living being on this Earth? Huh?!" His tone raised higher and higher until the end, he was practically howling in front of He Juan’s face. He even freed one hand to jab He Juan on the shoulder.

He Juan silently wiped the spit that landed on his face. "I get your point, but—"

"And I don’t get your point!" Jia Molei continued to holler on top of his lungs. He was so angry that the veins on his neck flared out in a terrifying manner. "Why are you so quick to give a promise to save someone and turn around to blame yourself whenever something goes wrong?! I’m so fucking sick of it!"

Without giving He Juan a chance to rebuke, Jia Molei kept shooting his mouth off. "What do you think you can do to save Miss Zhao? Do you want to confront the killer yourself?! Do you think your skin is harder than steel?! And your student – what’s his name again? – what do you think you can do? Talk his father out of it? Beat some sense into him? Protect his son under your wings?! You can’t even take fucking care of yourself so you’d better not run around trying to save other people, you dimwit!!"

He Juan slowly shrunk his neck and withered under Jia Molei’s infamous nagging. He knew that Jia Molei did not mean anything bad and his mouth ran quicker than his brain, but there was one point he said that jabbed He Juan right on his sore spot.

That’s right, with his current condition, on what basis could he give someone a promise? He was such a mess himself so who could guarantee he would not make a mess of other people too...?

Perhaps realizing that he was being too harsh, Jia Molei went silent for a few seconds before adding with a much softer tone, "Well, a lawyer, right? I know someone capable and they will definitely accept this case. Just consider it done and—"

Before he could finish his sentence, Jia Molei suddenly slammed the wheel to the side and performed a thrilling drift to make a turn. The screech of rubber tires against asphalt echoed harshly in his ears, awakening a dull throb on his skull.

This sudden turn caused He Juan to lose his balance only for his body to be rebounded by the seatbelt. He would have knocked his head on the window had he not gripped onto the handle bar in the nick of time. He gasped in surprise. Raising his head, he saw that they were not on their way home and got onto a completely unfamiliar road instead.

It was midnight and the road in front of them was completely desolate save from a few cars that were running at a moderate pace. Jia Molei floored the accelerator and overtook them in the matter of seconds.

He Juan was flabbergasted. W–What was going on? Just as he was opening his mouth to ask, he heard Jia Molei say in a rarely solemn and serious tone as he gripped the wheel with both hands."Sit tight. We’re being followed."
