Chapter 137: Not Simple

Wu Liang – codename Old Five – had been the target of the Narcotics Division for the past few months. A trusted informant had leaked the news to them that a major deal was going to be held in a KTV nightclub in Yuyang and the main dealer they had to catch tonight was none other than Old Five.

A few members of the division had been going undercover since evening and secured the best spot for the ambush. But then... they suddenly found out that... the guy they were targeting was dead?!

Kang Guanyu still could not believe in such a coincidental timing. "Old Lang, come here and look! Is this really the guy you’re searching for?!" He shoved Wu Liang’s document to Old Lang’s face, his good brother next door.

"Don’t bother," Old Lang swatted Kang Guanyu’s hand away, his face twisted in disgust and annoyance. "Even if he’s still miles away, Laozi will be able to recognize his stinky face! We have been chasing after this guy for almost half a year now. Do you think I will be mistaken about his damn face?!"

"Well, what you said made sense..." Kang Guanyu’s scratched his head, sheepish. He patted Old Lang’s shoulder and even served him a glass of water. "Alright, alright, I won’t ask anymore. Don’t be angry. Drink this water and calm down."

Different from the rowdy atmosphere outside, inside Captain Li Zhi’s office, the mood was heavy and somber like an overcast sky filled with gloomy clouds. He and the Captain of the Narcotics Division, surnamed Rong, were both heavy smokers. And thus, the smoke in the room was quickly thickening to the point where it could suffocate someone. Even though Old Five had died, there was not a hint of joy in both of their faces.

Captain Rong pressed his cigarette butt to the ashtray and frowned. "This matter is not so simple," he broke the silence. "Tonight is a major operation we have been planning for months. We heavily suspected that Old Five is a middleman to a drug lord in Yuyang. By estimation, the drug we can confiscate this time is close to fifty kilograms. But now that Old Five is dead, not to mention the drug lord, we can’t even gain access to the warehouse!" The more he spoke, the angrier he was. The cigarette butt was crushed within his trembling fist.

Li Zhi did not blame him. The Narcotics Division had been working hard to prepare for this operation for half a year, only to be thwarted in the end. Who would not be frustrated? However, judging from Captain Rong’s tone...

"Do you think that he is silenced?" Li Zhi asked in a low voice.

Captain Rong sneered. "Otherwise?"

Li Zhi frowned. The culprit behind Wu Liang’s death was his son, Wu Yuan. If what Captain Rong suspected was true, that Wu Liang was indeed silenced in order to prevent him from leaking any important information, then wouldn’t that mean that the executor was none other than his son – Wu Yuan?

Let’s say that it was true. Then where had he gotten the news of the ambush from? Wouldn’t it mean that... there was a traitor in the Narcotics Division?

Chills ran down Li Zhi’s spine at the thought. What he could think of, Captain Rong could as well. No wonder his expression looked so terrible. Li Zhi could not help but imagine himself in Captain Rong’s shoes. If one day, he was caught in the predicament where he had to be suspicious of his comrade-in-arms, he... he really had no idea what he should do. Everyone were close brothers who were tightly bound by camaraderie and fighting spirit. They had gone through many arduous and sleepless nights together. Li Zhi did not even want to imagine the possibility that a traitor could exist.

Li Zhi shook the thought out of his head. He recalled the disheveled and wretched appearance of the skinny high-schooler and could not connect him to any drug lord whatsoever. He had no evidence to back his claim, but as an officer who had been dealing with criminals for more than a decade, he thought that he was quite proficient in reading people.

"No, I don’t think Old Five’s son has something to do with this," Li Zhi said. He proceeded to fill Captain Rong in about the murder case tonight and the estrangement between father and son. No matter from which angle he saw it, it can only be a coincidence. However, would there be such a good coincidence? After telling the gist of the case, he added, "But you’re right about something. I also think that this matter is not simple."

Captain Rong was someone who did not like to waste even a single second. Now that his trail of clues was broken, he could only shift his target to the other remaining living being. "His son... Wu Yuan, isn’t it? Hand him over to our division. I will personally interrogate him and see if he is hiding something."

Li Zhi shot the man with a speechless look. Captain Rong had a special reputation in the City Bureau. Hearsay the junkies that were interrogated by him ended up being mentally deficient or breaking down in despair. He had 1001 ways to dismantle the criminal’s psychological defense and made them question life. Someone had even jokingly said, "The junkies around this area must be hiding because they’re afraid of being caught and questioned by Captain Rong."

If this man – who had been accustomed with dealing with the craziest addict – were to sit face-to-face with that tender-faced teenager, it was expected that Wu Yuan would be chewed until not even his bones remained. Li Zhi did not know whether those rumors were true but... he had a hunch that there was a high possibility that Wu Yuan would really go crazy.

He pinched his brows and let out a sigh. "The kid’s mental state... is not very good." After saying that sentence, he suddenly felt like it sounded very familiar. Li Zhi’s eyes snapped open as he was suddenly reminded of someone. "Wait a minute, let me call someone. You have no idea, Captain Rong, but before you came here, my subordinate Mu Yuze has been insisting that Wu Yuan is innocent and the real culprit is another person."

Captain Rong was intrigued. "Does he know something?"

At first, Li Zhi had assumed that Mu Yuze was taking pity on Wu Yuan’s bitter fate and his omega instinct subconsciously compelled him to protect the teenager. However, now that he knew Wu Liang’s real identity, he suddenly realized that perhaps he had overlooked something very important. What if... What if Wu Yuan was really not the killer? What if there was a third person on the crime scene who was manipulating everything behind the scenes?

If that conjecture was correct, then the matter of Old Five being silenced could be explained as well!

Li Zhi picked up his phone to call Mu Yuze.

At that moment, Mu Yuze was sitting beside He Juan in the crowded hallways. He Juan was not an officer and hence he had no right to take part in the investigation. He could only sit anxiously outside and wait for Mu Yuze’s news. It had been way past his bedtime and the subsequent event had caused him literal headache. Right now, his complexion was haggard and fatigued.

"How is Wu Yuan?" He Juan clenched his fists and forced a tense smile on his face. "I can’t... see him? Not even for a while?"

Mu Yuze pursed his lips. He did not want to lie to Juan-gege and he could not bear to see the disappointment in the Alpha’s eyes either. As such, he could only lower his lashes and stare at his own clasped hands. "Wu Yuan is... quite shaken. I’m sorry, I don’t have the authority to bring you to him," he whispered in gloom.
