Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 105: Why Her?
It might be cheesy of her to say this, but with Su Xieren, she caught a glimpse of the normal, ordinary life she had been yearning for all her life. She did not need to pretend to be anyone she was not; she did not need to flatter him, smile or be careful with what she said, nor did she need to morph herself into a person he liked.
Su Xieren saw her for what she was, and... it took Zhao Xinya a very long time to realize that it was all she had ever wanted. She wanted it... so much, to the point where she subconsciously tried to keep him away from the place which had bore witness to the most repulsive part of herself.
Her shell, her armor – her house.
It was like as long as Su Xieren did not take a step there, then he would remain as the purest part of her heart.
With him, she was able to forget everything – the horrible things she had gone through, how filthy and unworthy she was. It was because Su Xieren’s eyes were too pure and beautiful. Being seen by those eyes made her feel as if she was being cleansed as well, that she could one day break free of her unsightly cocoon to become a true butterfly...
Alas, she should have known that life would always be cruel to her.
Just as she thought that she could finally move on from that horrid past, she met the beast again and worst... she was caught. It was like the previous twenty two years did not exist and in a blink of an eye, she was thrown back into that freezing winter where all the hope in her heart was corroded bit by bit into an overwhelming despair and agony.
Why...? Why her? Why did life have to be so unkind to her?
Just what had she done wrong?!
As if Li Mingzhao wanted to push her further into the brink of despair, he deliberately talked about his future prey in front of her. He talked of how he was going to buy her, possess her, play with her to his heart’s content... just like how he did with Zhao Xinya.
Another little girl, another victim to those people’s depravity, another person who was going to follow in her footsteps...
That day, Zhao Xinya gained a sudden enlightenment, or to be exact, she had finally reached the height of insanity.
It took her twenty two years to realize that... some people were just born cruel and no matter how much time had passed, they would not change, ever. All of a sudden, the cowardice and timidity within her shattered and gave birth to unyielding determination. She did not want to see someone else become the second Zhao Xinya, who could only grit her teeth and bear with the pain and loneliness alone, who could only shrink her neck and try to forget everything that had happened. She had had enough of this sick and disgusting world!
This time, even if she had to go to hell, she was going to drag those people down with her!
Zhao Xinya had never been so clear on what she wanted to do for the past 36 years of her life. It’s just that... she had only one regret — Su Xieren.
Su Xieren was innocent. He did not have to deal with Zhao Xinya’s burden. He did not need to know how repulsive this world was. She wanted him to remain pure, kind and gentle. She wanted him to keep being a person who saw the entire world as it was.
Even if she ended up sinking into the mud and dying in it, she still wanted to protect this little sanctuary of her heart...
The day she chose to break up with Su Xieren was the most agonizing day in her life.
She thought that she had experienced all kinds of pain there was in this world, yet she had no idea that this kind of searing pain existed. Silent, muted and everlasting. Not the stabbing pain that was sharp and decisive, but the blunt, relentless kind that grinded the depth of her heart and squeezed every drop of blood out. It was so painful that even the tip of her fingers trembled in great agony.
She wanted to keep Su Xieren out of this messy matter, yet she was also afraid that if something did happen to her, then Su Xieren would relentlessly try to seek the truth and get himself into danger.
Hence, she wrote that letter and kept the copy of the evidence inside the tree trunk.
Someday... if the day really came when Su Xieren found those items, she hoped he would understand that things were already beyond his control and chose to keep himself safe instead...

In the Violent Crime Unit’s office.
All that could be heard was the noisy clicking of keyboard and intermittent sigh from the officers who were writing their reports. Even though they had clearly solved the case, nobody could bring themselves to cheer up in this kind of situation.
The truth was too unbearable. To think that countless people had already gone through a life similar to Zhao Xinya for the past few decades, yet only after her death could they manage to dig up everything... their hearts felt stifled to death! Clearly, the criminals had been caught, and only trial and punishment would await them, yet it was as if they still had not done enough to live up to Zhao Xinya’s sacrifice...
Li Zhi leaned against the door frame, swept his gaze over the despondent people and heaved a helpless sigh. He rapped his knuckles on the door to draw their attention. "Keep up the good work. Submit the report to me today and you can go home for the day. Everyone has already worked hard these past few days. Take this chance to have a good rest and return with good spirit tomorrow."
"Captain..." Kang Guanyu remarked listlessly. "Is it really done? Have we really solved the case?"
Li Zhi cast him a sideways glance. "Or else?"
"I don’t know..." he shrugged. "Shouldn’t we do something more to... add Li Mingzhao’s charges? To the point where he can’t bail himself out no matter how much power and money he has?" 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Everyone stopped their work and nodded at Li Zhi. What Kang Guanyu said matched perfectly with what they were thinking about. It was as if a fish bone was stuck to their throat. They still wanted to do more, yet had no idea what they should do...
Li Zhi pinched his brows and raised his hand that was holding a roll of papers. Seeing that, everyone immediately scrambled to get as far away as possible for him, especially Kang Guanyu who ran away the fastest and even grabbed a thick document to shield his head from the Captain’s nonsensical abuse. Seeing this chaotic scene, the corner of Li Zhi’s lips twitched and in the end, he lowered his hand again.
"I understand," he said. "You must think that it is not fair for Miss Zhao. She has lived two decades of her life in misery only to die grievously in the end. Whereas Li Mingzhao, this bastard, continued to live in luxury without the slightest guilt. And now that he has confessed the truth and pleaded leniency, he will be able to live a couple more years of peace in prison whereas the victim’s body already becomes cold and stiff. I completely understand where your frustration comes from."
Hearing this, the officers hung their heads low, dejected. It was as if there were gloomy clouds brewing on the ceiling, dampening the entire group’s spirit with anxiety and restlessness.
Li Zhi had not finished with his lecture. "But you should also understand that with this, you can finally deliver justice to countless others who have suffered before. Not only that, you have prevented many similar cases from happening in the future. If you keep this mindset, then everything will not be so unbearable anymore." He passed through the crowd and patted their shoulders one by one. "Finish your report, go home, and ponder on it carefully. This kind of case is not the first, and it will not be the last either. In the future, you may meet the second Li Mingzhao, or even someone worse than him. By then, you should be able to adjust your mentality as soon as possible."
"After all, the only ones who can bring justice to those innocently wronged people are us – the police. If we are so easily affected, then what about the people who are directly involved in the crime?"
Li Zhi finished saying what he wanted to say and continued to stroll into his office with a helpless look on his face. Alas, he had not taken more than five steps when the office’s phone suddenly rang.
Kang Guanyu pounced on it like a cheetah and lifted the handle to his ear before anyone could react, "Violent Crime Unit, how may we help you?"
Everyone shifted their eyes to him, curious.
Kang Guanyu listened to what the other side was saying, then replied with, "Okay, I see." After that, he hung up the phone and raised his head to meet everyone’s eyes.
"Mr. Su Xieren is finally here to see Miss Zhao. And also..." he hesitated a while as he glanced at Mu Yuze who had been diligently working on his report despite the earlier chaos. "Mr. He has come to accompany him."

A/N: we’re finally getting closer to the end of the first case ^^
Fyi, Zhao Xinya’s case is inspired by a dance I have seen one year ago. At that time, I got goosebumps omg, I almost bawled my eyes out.
