Chapter 204: Guild War [ 1 ]

BOOOOM!

The second-floor windows didn’t just crack, they shattered outward as if struck by a titan’s fist, sending shards of reinforced glass exploding into the air like deadly rain across the lounge.

The shockwave that followed tore through the hall with brutal force, flipping heavy tables, sending armored adventurers skidding across the floor, and slamming bodies against stone pillars hard enough to rattle the entire structure.

Dust and splintered wood filled the air in a choking haze while a low, rumbling aftershock rolled through the Guild like thunder trapped inside a mountain.

Sage had already moved before the explosion fully registered. His body acted on instinct honed through years of survival. He dropped over Mina, pulling her down beneath him as the shockwave passed overhead, fragments of glass and debris clattering harmlessly across his back.

The force pressed down like an invisible weight; his staff scraped against the floor as he braced himself, teeth clenched against the pressure. For a few seconds, there was nothing but ringing silence, dust swirling around them, and the distant roar of something massive beyond the walls.

When the tremors subsided, Sage lifted his head and turned immediately to Mina. His expression was hard; his eyes sharp despite the chaos. "Are you hurt?" he asked quickly, his voice low but firm as he scanned her for injuries.

Mina pushed herself up, brushing dust from her shoulder. Her face was pale but steady; her eyes sparkled with focus rather than fear.

She shook her head once. "I’m fine," she replied in an unusually serious tone, her gaze shifting toward the shattered windows and the sky beyond. "But Uncle Sage... this isn’t random. The Guild is under attack."

Sage nodded once, jaw tightening. "I can see that."

He stood in one smooth motion; an aura flared faintly around him as he turned to face the disoriented adventurers scattered across the lounge.

Some were already rising; others gripped their weapons tightly as instincts kicked in to override confusion. The air buzzed with tension, panic threatening to spread, but Sage’s voice cut through it like steel.

"Everyone, listen!" he roared, commanding clarity resonating across the entire floor. "It looks like our success has angered some people. The Guild is under attack! If you’re able to move, grab your weapons and get outside,...now!"

The effect was immediate: heads snapped toward him; fear transformed into focus. He didn’t waste time explaining or speculating, he didn’t need to. The authority in his tone steadied everyone in that room.

"This place isn’t just a building," Sage continued, his voice rising. controlled yet fierce. "It’s what we built together: our work, our livelihood, our chance to stand on our own feet! If someone thinks they can take that away..."

He raised his staff slightly, his eyes ablaze with intensity. "...then they picked the wrong place to start."

The atmosphere shifted dramatically. Weapons were drawn, and armor locked into place. The hesitation vanished as seasoned adventurers moved in unison, like a single organism. Some leapt through the shattered windows without a second thought, their bodies blurring as they dropped into the plaza below, while others rushed for the stairs, weapons at the ready. Mina was already in motion.

She grabbed her massive shield, feeling the metal hum as golden mana surged along its surface. Her earlier frustration transformed into cold determination.

Without another word, she dashed toward the broken windows and launched herself outward in a streak of gold, calling back as she descended, "I’ll check the ground situation!"

Sage watched her go for just a moment before nodding. He gripped his staff and turned to sprint down the staircase. Each step echoed sharply as he made his way to the first floor, his aura tightening around him in preparation for combat.

Below, chaos erupted in the Guild Hall. Adventurers poured toward the entrance, boots thundering against the stone floor, armor clanking and weapons drawn. The atmosphere shifted from confusion to war readiness.

Behind the reception desk, Boren and Lyana stood frozen, their faces drained of color and eyes wide with shock as they witnessed the unfolding chaos.

Sage rushed straight toward them. "Listen carefully," he said quickly, maintaining a steady voice despite the tension. "Gather every staff member and get them to the second floor. Barricade the upper halls and stay there. No one comes down unless I say so."

Boren swallowed hard but nodded in agreement. Lyana followed suit; her fear was evident but overshadowed by urgency.

"Go," Sage urged.

They didn’t hesitate.

He turned immediately and burst through the Guild doors; sunlight hit his face as he stepped into the plaza, and stopped short. His expression hardened.

The Guild plaza was filled with adventurers, dozens upon dozens of them, gathered instinctively with weapons raised and auras blazing. But none were looking at each other; they all stared upward.

Above them stretched a colossal golden mana formation that shimmered across the sky like a second horizon. It glimmered with intricate runic patterns that radiated power strong enough to make the air vibrate.

This formation sealed off the entire Guild complex beneath it like a cage forged from light, no one could leave or enter.

The realization settled heavily over everyone in the plaza.

Then Sage noticed them: black-clad figures standing at every edge of the plaza, on rooftops, on shattered stone, lining streets beyond Guild grounds. Hundreds of them stood silent and motionless, each radiating an oppressive aura that pressed against Sage’s chest like a physical weight.

His eyes narrowed as he felt it instantly: Three-Star Expert Knights among hundreds, and several heavier presences scattered throughout, a handful of Four-Star Master Knights lurking within their ranks.

Mina landed beside him in a flash of gold, her shield planted firmly against the ground; her usually bright face now sharp and focused as she fixed her gaze on their encirclement.

"Uncle Sage..." she murmured softly.

"I know," he replied quietly.

A chill of fear gripped his chest, immediate and unsettling. This wasn’t just a skirmish; it was a coordinated assault,...a purge.

He took a slow, steady breath, pushing the fear down and burying it beneath a sense of responsibility.

Then he stepped forward. All eyes turned to him. He raised his staff slightly, his voice ringing out across the plaza, strong and clear.

"Ladies and gentlemen," he began, calm yet resolute, "it seems our prosperity has become an eyesore to certain individuals."

The adventurers listened intently.

"This Guild," he continued, gesturing around them, "is more than just contracts and coin. It’s our opportunity, our chance to grow and stand as something greater than mere tools for nobles or pawns in their games."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd.

"And now," Sage said, his voice hardening with resolve, "they’ve decided to send their dogs to tear it down."

"So what do we do?" Sage asked.

For a heartbeat, silence hung in the air.

Then...

"We fight!"

The shout erupted from the crowd like thunder, voices merging into one as weapons were raised high. Determination burned in their eyes. These weren’t soldiers; they were people who had clawed their way up from nothing, individuals who had finally found a place that treated them as equals, and they would not let it be taken away.

Sage nodded once, lifting his staff and pointing toward the encircling black-clad figures.

"Then it’s war."

At that moment, the leader of the black-clad forces stood atop a distant building. He raised his hand and then dropped it.

In an instant, the black-clad figures surged forward like a tide of shadows. The adventurers charged head-on in response.

Steel clashed against steel. Mana exploded into brilliant bursts of light. The plaza erupted into chaos.

The first clashes were brutal, blades met blades as halberds swung in sweeping arcs while spells detonated in flashes of flame and light. Shockwaves rippled through the ground, cracking stone and sending dust swirling into the air. Warriors roared; auras flared; the sounds of battle filled every corner of the plaza.

Mina charged ahead with her shield raised high, golden energy shimmering on its surface as she slammed into the first line of attackers. The impact sent two black-clad knights flying backward. She pivoted instantly, swinging her shield again to intercept a blade aimed at another adventurer; sparks flew as metal collided.

Sage moved like a storm behind her, his staff glowing with power as runes ignited along its length. He struck the ground once with forceful precision, sending several attackers off balance before unleashing a precise burst of mana that hurled one enemy against a wall.

The battle unfolded in every direction. Adventurers clashed fiercely with trained soldiers, their desperation palpable. Blood splattered against the stone, and the sound of steel striking steel filled the air. War cries reverberated beneath the golden dome above.

Yet, despite their fierce resistance, more figures clad in black continued to shot forward, coming from all directions.

The Guild found itself surrounded, and this was only the beginning of a war that would test them all.
