Chapter 35: Beginner spells

At the crack of dawn, in the small town near the forest, a thirty-man crew was armed and ready. This crew consisted of five knights who would be leading them, as well as the town's militia.

The militia was a small trained force that the Baron had in order to assist his knights. It was impossible for one to become a knight without being bestowed the title by the king.

The process of becoming a knight was an extreme and rigorous one, especially for those not born of noble birth.

You would first strive to become a page, carrying out tasks for knights and lords. You would go there at the age of seven and stay for years to come.

There, you would learn manners and etiquette, be forced to learn to read and write, and know how to act properly at all times. Then, you would begin learning horseback riding, and if your lord was wealthy enough, you might ride a land dragon.

You would be put through several months of sword training along with other weapons and also trained in the art of magic if you showed signs of an affinity.

You would assist the lord's knights, helping them clean their armor and weapons. If you survived the duration, you would become a squire at the age of eleven. It was seen as a great step up, but in reality, it was the walk to your death if you were not careful.

As a squire, you would be assigned to take care of a knight as an apprentice, even follow him into battle to assist him. It was at this point many potential knights fell to the blade or the elements and died.

For those that survived the rigorous training required to be a squire, the lord would send them to a knight's academy at fourteen, where they would spend the next four years in intense training to become knights.

And if they graduated, they were given the status of Gilded Aspirant, a title bestowed only upon those who graduated and the final step to becoming a knight.

From there, you must strive to work for your lord with all your ability, and when he deems you fit, he will send out a letter requesting you be added to the next knighting.

The ceremony was held once a year, and all the names on the list would be knighted in grandeur, and your journey to knighthood would finally be complete.

Because of all this, knights were given maximum respect. Their armor was a testament to all they had been through and how they managed to get here.

The militia, on the other hand, was made up of able-bodied men with less than a year of training, just enough to protect the town.

They lacked quality weaponry and armor, as their tacky leather and busted armor pieces showed. They were recruited by the Baron; there was no need for the king in their matter.

The five knights stood ahead of the militia. One of the knights turned and faced them, removed his helmet, and held it at his side.

He was closing in on middle age, with deep blue eyes and a very low haircut. "I know many of you know me already, but for the sake of those who might not, I am Captain Lewis, the acting head of the knights of the town of Ravenhold.

Last night, a spiritual disturbance of shocking magnitude was discovered, and that could mean many things.

It could mean a threat, it could mean a treasure—we do not know exactly what it is, but we have been tasked with finding whatever it is and recovering it for the Baron.

Your task is simple: keep an open eye and fight off whatever tries to stop you. Should you spot the item we are looking for, do not try to keep it for yourself.

The king himself will be in search of that item, and if he discovers that someone stole it from the Baron, he would rip Ravenhold apart to find it.

If he finds it, whoever took it would most likely be executed, along with all his family, friends, and relations.

We should take that into perspective as we move. The sighting of the energy was a few kilometers into the forest. It is not too deep, but also not in the outer regions.

We can expect several monsters to attack or try to stop us, so always be ready for combat. Are we clear?" he asked.

"Yes, sir," they bellowed.

"I said, are we clear?" he asked again, adding more force to his voice.

"Yes, sir!" they responded even louder.

"Alright then, let us move out," he said and turned around. With the five knights leading, they marched out of the town and into the forest.

Inside the forest, Aric stood at the center of his campsite, constantly turning around, looking at every nook and cranny.

Everyone just sat and watched him do what he was doing. They knew he was thinking of building, but they didn't know exactly what he was planning to build.

'There is so, so much to do. We have to finish the wall and also raise stronger and better houses. That should no longer be an issue, though—I have the gold for it and the people for it as well.

I think I should also get some spells for myself. I have an affinity for earth, healing, and plants. They will all be very helpful if I also want to start a farm and ensure that food is constant,' Aric thought to himself, then opened the system screen.

"I don't know what to search for. System, recommend what I should use to start learning earth magic, plant magic, and healing magic as well," Aric said.

The system immediately pulled up a list for him.
