Chapter 363: The Results

"How is she feeling now?" Lucy asked Duncan after he was done checking on her health. The look on his handsome face was subtle, and that worried Lucy who couldn’t interpret what that expression meant.

"Is something wrong with Sam?" She queried further, not sure of what to expect from that look of his. Madeline had stepped into the tent on time, and she gently placed the cool, wet towel over Samantha’s burning forehead.

"Is she taking extra naps cause she’s not feeling so great?" Alain questioned his mother, obediently kneeling beside where Samantha laid, and his mother couldn’t help but nod to her son’s neverending questions.

She was told children normally get curious from the age of seven, but she wasn’t sure how she was going to understand her son who wants details on every little thing. Right now, they would need the aid of a physician, and Lucy was about to suggest going into town to find one, not until Duncan said something her ears never expected to hear.

"I think she’s... pregnant?" Duncan tilted his head at his own words. It sounded like a question rather than a given answer, and Lucy blinked at him, stupefied by his indecisive conclusion.

"Is she pregnant, or do you want a baby?" Lucy couldn’t help but answer sarcastically, but she mellowed down the instant Duncan frowned. Clearing her throat, she tried to change the topic, "how can you be so sure of that? It will be better if I go into town and find someone professional enough to help."

"You’re not going anywhere," Duncan asserted before she could leave, "not with the land’s current state, it’s too risky to go out there. There’s a chance you could be ambushed even, you’ll stay here and look after her, I’ll go and get someone – I’m not sure if what I said is the case, so we’ll need help from an expert."

"The skys are in your favor," Lucy opened the tent flap to check the weather, "no wonder you’re eager to step out. If I didn’t know better, I’d say his Majesty Duncan is starting to develop tender feelings for–"

"You just don’t know when to stay quiet, do you?" Duncan cut her off before she could finish her sentence, but it didn’t come out as strict as he wanted it to, to his disappointment.

He knew what she wanted to say, and he wasn’t prepared to hear it.

"I’ll go, monitor her health till I return." He reached the tent flap, and Lucy did the honors of escorting him out while Madeline stayed back to monitor Samantha’s temperature.

"Mama, will Auntie give me a sister?" Alain questioned his mother who paused in her treatment to glance at her eager son.

"I thought I was your sister." Liliana frowned at Alain who shrugged, "don’t you want a little sister too? I’ll be the one big brother with two sisters."

"We’re both getting a sister then?" Lily’s eyes sparkled at the thought of having another playmate. Madeline had nothing to say to those two and continued to let them dream – but, could it really be? For some reason, she was excited to confirm if it was true or not.

Outside the tent, Lucy kept blabbering non-stop on how Duncan should be careful once he gets into town. They had barely crossed the marked trail when they noticed two strangers heading their way, and they stopped in their gait.

"Who’s that?" Lucy subconsciously hid behind Duncan who stayed rooted in his spot, and she peeked from behind him, her eyes widening in pure shock once the two people heading their way became more vivid. She exchanged glances with Duncan who seemed taken aback as well, and Lucy no longer hid herself behind the vampire.

"Greetings!" Brian bowed his head respectfully at the two of them, "forgive our unexpected intrusion, but we’re here to see King Ivan and his wife."

"Who are you?" Duncan asked when he sensed they bore no ill-intention. Regardless of what he felt, he knew better than to trust complete strangers, not after the dirty stunt Carmela pulled on all of them.

"We are elves, we live close to the path that leads to the outside borders. I’m Brian, and this is Elara." he stretched forth the basket containing fruits and many other things he’s brought with them, "we wanted to give this to the two of them."

"Wait, I’ve heard of you." Lucy blurted, recalling Samantha mentioning a group of elves she met, and this had to be the Brian she told them about. She looked at Duncan who was still lost.

"They’re good people, Sam already told me about them." she explained, and Duncan’s gaze returned to the elves.

"Can I see both your wrists for a second?" he requested, and when they stretched their wrists forward, there was no mark on them. That made him drop his suspicion.

"The two people you seek won’t be able to receive you at the current moment. Ivan has set out, and his wife is presently feeling under the weather. I’m afraid you’ll have to come back another time, and as you can see, I’m heading out myself to find someone who can treat her."

"She’s ill?" A look of worry instantly contorted the face of Brian, and he glanced at Elara before meeting Duncan’s indifferent stare, "please, if you don’t mind, allow us to help. You don’t need to leave, Elara here is the healer in our community, and I’m sure if you let her, she’ll be able to assist the Queen in getting better."

"Perfect timing, the heavens must have sent you here." Lucy smiled in relief before glancing at old Elara.

"I’ll take you to her tent, please come with me."

Elara returned her smile before following Lucy, and Brain paced behind with Duncan. They waited outside the tent while Elara went in to attend to Samantha, and Duncan could see the clear, genuine worry in the eyes of Brian.

"Is it very serious?" as if unable to contain his concern, he whispered, and Duncan hummed softly.

"Well she fainted," he pondered, "but I’d rather not say. I hope it’s the latter either way, else Ivan will not be happy."

"Where did he go?"

"He went after your notorious king and Queen." He quipped, "Hopefully he catches those two nuisance this time around. Come to think of it, how did your land end up with such rulers?" freewebnøvel.coɱ

"Power." Brian sighed, "that’s why they’re obsessed with it, but it doesn’t matter now the mistakes we’ve made, cause I also want them gotten rid of."

Their conversation stopped when Lucy stepped out of the tent, and they both turned their attention to her. Elara stepped out afterwards, and the look on their faces carried a somber reaction that only made them try to prepare for the worst.

"What happened?" Brian was the one to ask, hating the growing suspense. Lucy and Elara exchanged glances before facing the two men.

"We know now why she’s been too emotional over the weeks, and the tiredness too." Lucy folded her arms and shook her head slightly.

"Well?" Duncan prompted, only to see a smile blossom on Elara’s lips.

"You were right Duncan, she’s pregnant with Ivan’s child!" Lucy exclaimed joyously. "Sam will be over the moon when she learns about this!"
