Chapter 340: An Elf Friend

"A baby sister?!" The couple exclaimed at the same time, but unlike Cassian who was still frozen, Madeline pondered on it and assumed it wasn’t a bad idea. She should get on with it now that she still has the strength to go through that experience again, and unlike her, she wouldn’t want her child to grow without a sibling, or even a sister to call his own. freewebnσvel.cøm

"Why do you want a sister and not a brother?" Madeline asked her son softly, her eyes gleaming with a playful intent, and that was until she heard her son say,

"So when she irritates me, I can pull her hair." He answered, and the way he said it made it sound like a harmless intention he was eager to try. Madeline could hear her husband laugh softly behind her, as if their son’s words made him recollect how he treats his sister, and when she looked at him with a glare, he sealed his lips, schooling his expression in front of his son.

"That’s not a nice thing to do, to anyone for that matter. When you do get yourself a sister you need to–" Cassian tried to be reasonable but failed, "I’m horrible at this, I’ll lecture him on anything except that."

"Of course, you weren’t any different." Madeline muttered before turning to her son, "do you pull Lily’s hair all the time? Or where is this coming from?"

"I don’t. Knowing the kind of Mother I have I refrain from such activities, only when necessary, but the rest of my new friends do. Lily fakes her cry sometimes to get them in trouble when they do." He shrugged, and Madeline hardly knew what to say. All those times Lily would come crying to her, she always found her son sitting at the farthest corner, watching in silence, but now that he spilled it all out to her, she realized how keenly observant he was concerning matters around him.

What else does he know?

"Your son’s way of thinking is unlike any other child." Samantha showed up with a smile, and her presence made everyone camping out look cheerful. Lucy, who was roasting spiced meat on skewers, beamed at the sight of Samantha, and she handed her skewer to the confused Herbert so she could join her friend.

"Is she going to come back for it?" He inquired as he roasted it over the open flame, and Atticus relaxed his back on the bark of the tree, yawning from exhaustion.

"Who cares? Just eat it."

Just like them, other guards had formed a cluster around each fire, enjoying the night. The soft rustling of leaves and the distant hoot of an owl added to the backdrop of the nocturnal feeling, and Ivan joined Samantha who sat with Madeline within her campfire. His eyes scanned the ones outside, and he was relieved to see his men getting some rest and conversing with themselves– probably about tomorrow’s investigation.

However, two vampires were not in the scene– Tobias and Duncan.

Now that he thought about it, Tobias hasn’t stepped out of his tent all day. In a way, he wasn’t surprised, the both of them share a similar trait when it comes to locking themselves indoors all day rather than facing the light of dawn. Normally, Alistair was the one who always dragged Tobias outside, but now that he’s no more– he wondered how Tobias must be coping by himself.

"You okay?" The sweet, concerned voice of Samantha made him look in her direction. He nodded his head, assuring her that he was fine, and Samantha intimately hooked her arm around his, leaning her head on his shoulder.

"Any idea when that nosy little plant of yours will regain consciousness?" Ivan asked, and Samantha shook her head quietly, already missing her plant’s intruding but engaging voice. If it was here with them, Samantha knew she’d be the one at the receiving end.

"Funny how I miss the one thing that annoys me most." She sighed, "when Alistair handed Viney back to me, I couldn’t ask him how he got a hold of it since Carmela claimed she had him in her clutches. I’m worried, but I’m also trying to stay positive with my thoughts."

"Everything will be fine." He consoled her, letting his arm go around her shoulder and pulling her to his chest.

"It hurts to be single," commented Lucy who was in the midst of both couples. "Alain, seems like we’re the only one left out. Mind taking me as your baby?"

"And what are the odds?"

"I’ll buy you chocolates."

"Yayy!! I’ve got a baby!" Alain moved from his mother’s side and went into the arms of Lucy.

"That is so weird coming from an actual baby." Cassian shook his head with a sigh. He turned to look at the woman who had taken his arm and wrapped herself with it, leaning closer to his body warmth, whilst a smile that expressed the word ’finally!’ displayed on his handsome face.

"By the way, any news about Carmela?" Cassian inquired from Ivan, "the guards went to retrieve her body if I remember correctly, but they returned with nothing."

"There was nothing to return with," he informed them, "she escaped the explosion. For now, I own everything she rules, which means I have the upper hand in terms of everything, and I won’t be leaving till I wipe out her entire colony. They did dirty to those innocent children, and my wife. She won’t get away with it for much longer."

"I’m glad Marius was caught in the end," Lucy expressed her relief before turning to Samantha, "when we came looking for His Majesty, sir Cassian and Lord Duncan spotted the compass he left behind, which means you were found in the alleyway. How did you manage to flee from the fortress? It must have been terrifying."

"Oh, It was but I... got help." Samantha’s eyes sparkled with warmth as she sat straight, "I actually escaped long before that night in the alleyway, but I was staying in an elf community during that time. When I told them about my predicament, they took care of me and helped me organize a ship that would lead me back to GreenHollow, but I couldn’t make it to the ship on time."

"An elf community?" Madeline exclaimed, and Samantha nodded enthusiastically, "I plan on taking Ivan there tomorrow. I have a good friend there, his name is Brian, and there’s this lovely Nanna who put a roof under my head."

"And their elves?"

"Yes."

"And you have a friend there?"

"You mean Brian? Yes." Samantha answered to Lucy, "he saved me from the hands of Carmela many times, and he treated me well. They made me feel safe, and he supported me a lot. He’s really kind, and we did many things together after figuring out Carmela’s intention."

"Many things like what?" Enquired Ivan, "does this friend of yours stay at Nana’s place?"

"No, but he visits regularly."

"To see who? You or the Nanna?"

Samantha was about to respond, but she involuntarily sealed her lips after noticing the stare her husband kept casting her way. If one looked closely, they’d catch his glaring eyes and slightly gritted teeth.

"Does he know you’re married too?" His voice was starting to sound unusually cool, one could hardly discern the jealousy, but Samantha knew better. Her gaze shifted uncomfortably between Lucy and Madeline, whilst her cheeks were beginning to turn red, knowing they sensed it too.

"I was only being courteous."

"Meet me in the tent." And he rose to his feet, exiting the scene. Samantha remained seated and dazed, unable to fathom the reason behind his suddenly calm request. She couldn’t explain the reason why, but her gut feeling made her aware of his intention on spanking her tonight.
