Chapter 328: Show No Mercy

—--

The runebound councils stepped into the Queen’s fortress, a place they had traversed so many times, but upon entering, they noticed the conspicuous arrangements of the fortress.

The blood moon was drawing closer with each passing day, and they were here to finally receive more of the potion Queen Carmela had promised to share with them– the type that was capable of granting immortality with potential abilities. It was a secret experiment she had conversed with them about, and they were eager to hear the news of her success.

"Shouldn’t this feel wrong?" Whispered one of the runebound council to his neighbor, "we hardly know of the potions main ingredient, including where she gets the source. You don’t expect me to drink what I have not seen her prepare with my own two eyes... Do you? If she wanted to make potions why is she Queen then? She should have taken the role of an Enchanter."

He carefully expressed his discomfort, adjusting the disturbing lapel of his black fur coat.

"The walls have ears too in case you’ve forgotten, so you might have to tone down the volume of your voice, and also, don’t drag me into it." Responded his female companion who haughtily moved ahead.

However, an unsettling chill hung in the air as they advanced forward, and the familiar halls seemed cloaked in a strange darkness that defied their magical knowledge. Sconces flickered, casting an ominous glow upon the dim-lit hallway.

The atmosphere, once charged with a sense of familiarity, now resonated with a disturbing aura, befitting for a fortress ruled by a dark force.

"Are we perhaps in the wrong fortress? If my memories aren’t deceiving me, this path should lead to the council chamber." One of them pointed at the unfamiliar narrowed path, but they didn’t have a semblance to the ones he vividly recalled.

"Where are the guards stationed here? What is going on?"

As the members exchanged uneasy glances, attempting to make sense of the puzzling transformation, a young, golden-blonde-haired woman emerged from the shadows.

Her steps were hauntingly silent against the stone floor, and as she drew nearer, her pitch-black eyes sent shivers down their spine. The air around her carried an otherworldly weight that was hard to ignore, and an unspoken discomfort settled amongst the runebound council.

"Who is she?"

"I’ve never seen her kind before but..." the councils exchanged wary glances after sighting the green arcane marks that weaved from the corner of her eyes to her flowing hair, and her expression, it was like a body without a soul.

They frowned upon the energy she presently emanated, and they knew her presence had been a plot from Marius and Carmela.

They were all tricked into coming here!

"All eleven heads." Marius’s order whispered hypnotically in her ears, and Samantha’s fist subconsciously balled at her side.

In a flash, legions of black tendrils, far different from the normal healthy ones she occasionally summoned, awaited her command. The sight of her tendrils poised for action sent slight shivers down the council’s spine, a clear indication that the woman in front of them held power beyond their comprehension.

Without warning, the tendrils surged forward with a serpent-like grace, snaking through the air with deadly precision. The councils immediately summoned their enchanted shields, attempting to deflect the impending onslaught, but the woman didn’t seem to be fazed by their resistance.

With each step taken towards the barrier they had formed within themselves, the fiercer the onslaught of the tendrils became.

"I can’t get a good aim! These snake plants are everywhere!’’ complained one of the councils as he struggled to maintain the barrier, unbeknownst to them, there were more damages to be done.

Extending her hand to the side, the vines immediately weaved and linked themselves together, forging a unique sword which she firmly grabbed by the hilt.

"The barriers are breaking! She’s too strong!" Yelled one of the councils in alarm. The tendrils grew more aggressive with their relentless strikes on the invisible barrier until eventually, they gave up, and the barrier dissipated. It was too late to react because Samantha was already within their space, sword brandishing as she targeted the neck of two councils at the same time, slicing them off with calculated precision.

Blood splattered on her face and dress, and she took note of how many more heads she needed to take back to her Master. One of the councils tried to use his vortex to wear her down, but her vines were quicker, immediately forging a shield that absorbed the vortex, and when they vanished, the onslaught continued.

Her movements were skillfully unpredictable, and when she was done finishing the job assigned to her, the hallway was bathed in blood, including herself as a whole. A scene like this would have traumatized the real Samantha, but presently, her expression was void with not a trace of emotion.

She gazed down at her bloody hand, but there was nothing she could make of it. The councils lay dead like butchered animals, but before Samantha could get the heads of each council, a chain adorned with spikes had wrapped her sword, and in one swift move, it was snatched from her grip.

Jerking her head at the intruder, Ivan’s figure came into sight. The vampire was about to take hold of the sword when it deformed and turned into a plant, losing its shape. Confused, he lifted his head to gaze at Samantha, and a new sword had been forged in her grip.

"Samantha?" Ivan’s pupils dilated as he scanned the bloody mess that had taken place in the hallway, but the one responsible for the mess was no one but his wife.

Her cloth, face, hand, the blood on her was a testament to the killing she had single-handedly done, and for a moment, Ivan fell speechless. The world around them seemed to come to a stand-still as they locked gaze, but the eyes he was looking directly into, those weren’t the eyes of his little lamb. He knew she was still in there, he could still feel her presence despite the influence of Marius.

"What has he done to you?" His voice was barely above a whisper. His heart thumped with the idea that he had failed to reach his Samantha on time, and because of him, she was forced to stain her hands with blood.

"Sam.." He tried to go to her, but she pointed her sword at him in retaliation, a silent threat of what she was capable of doing to him if he dared come closer to her, and Ivan had to stop in his gait.

"It’s me." Ivan pointed at himself, dropping aside his chains to indicate he meant no harm to her. The pain that clutched his heart at the emptiness in her eyes– it was like she never knew him.

"What... what has he done to you?’’

"I turned her into something you could not." Came the voice of Marius as he materialized behind Samantha, a triumphant smile reaching his lips.

"I made her powerful enough to end eleven top councils. What do you think of our new look? Don’t we look perfect together, almost... the same?" His eyes glinted menacingly as he turned to Samantha.

"He is our enemy, show no mercy... and kill him." He whispered into her ear.
