Bought For A Baby, Kept For A Lifetime-Chapter 51: Outsmarted
"You don’t get to just leave after accusing me. Not until you tell me why you have such a low idea of me. What have I done to you?"
His breathing seemed to turn heavy. He couldn’t break his gaze from her face no matter how hard he tried.
He couldn’t push the suffocating feeling in his chest away no matter how hard he tried.
Her eyes, the tears that fell from them, were filled with the image of someone being terribly wronged.
Was he being excessive to her?
Yes, he would admit what he said to her was horrible.
Yes, he would admit his words were harsh, but they weren’t baseless.
The contract between them was the biggest proof.
He also didn’t want to torment her, he might be emotionless to other people, but he would never treat just anyone harshly.
He hated that she was no different from that woman.
He hated that her motives were just for greed.
If only she was nothing like that woman he despised.
If only...
Andrew suddenly shifted his gaze away from her face sharply and snatched his sleeve out of her grip.
"No need to come to work tomorrow. You failed our agreement, so you’re fired!" He said these words with a merciless tone instead of answering her questions.
When his face was turned away from her, he closed his eyes slowly. That ache in his chest spread sharply once more, and his hand trembled slightly as he began to walk towards the exit of the office hurriedly.
But what he didn’t expect was for her to suddenly jump in his way and shut the door just before he could go out.
There was a key dangling in the door’s keyhole and without hesitation she turned it, locking the door. She held the key in her fist and looked up at him.
"I haven’t done anything wrong to you. I don’t deserve to be treated this way. If you believe otherwise, then tell me why. Why should I be fired just because you have a low opinion of me? If you can prove to me that I’m indeed a low and dirty woman trying to trap a rich man, then I’ll resign myself and you won’t ever see me again."
Anne knew once the man left this room, then it would be over—she’d have really lost her job.
She hadn’t finished cleaning all the floors he’d ordered her to on time. But it was realistically impossible for her to have been able to finish alone with the time he gave her. Even despite having help, she still hadn’t been able to complete the task.
He fired her just like that without mercy, and all for what? Because he thought she was someone she wasn’t. Anne knew with certainty that the reason he was firing her wasn’t just because she hadn’t completed the task he gave her.
If she let herself lose this job without doing anything to prove that he was mistaken about her, wouldn’t she regret it?
Hence, without thinking too much, she’d done the first thing she could to stop him from leaving. She’d hurried in front of him and locked the door, daringly hiding the key behind her.
The man’s eyes darkened threateningly. He calmly extended his palm to her, speaking in a strict voice, "Give me the keys."
Anne tightened the key in her hand and shook her head. "Tell me first, what did I do to make you think so badly of me?"
In all honesty, she didn’t care much what his opinion about her was. She didn’t care what he thought of her because he held no importance to her, but if his opinion of her was the reason he was always being mean to her and saying harsh things to her, then she would like to know so she could rectify it—whatever it was she might have done to him.
But he didn’t answer her question. Instead, the palm he extended to her suddenly flew. Anne shut her eyes in fear, thinking he was going to hit her, but the sound she heard came from the door above her head.
She slowly opened her eyes to realize he’d slammed his palm onto the door next to her head.
"I don’t have to tell you anything. Give me the fucking keys!"
He’d leaned dangerously close to her, and her heart began to accelerate its pace.
Her hand which was holding the key shook in fear as she stubbornly kept her hands behind her body, which was glued to the locked door. Lowering her eyes from the man’s stormy gaze that looked like it could devour her whole, she shook her head again, trying to maintain a look of firmness even though she was beyond frightened on the inside.
She suddenly felt the man move, and she became alert.
Before he could grab her hand from behind her, Anne slipped away from him. She’d anticipated him to try to use brute force to snatch the keys from her, and she was right. That was why she’d quickly slipped away when she sensed his movement.
She quickly ran to the other side of the room. Letting him have the keys and leave would be the end of her working in this company—she would be back to square one.
When Kristen wakes up, if she no longer had this job, how would she be able to continue to provide for them both?
She saw his eyes close in frustration as he turned to her sharply, taking long strides to get to her.
Anne began to hurriedly back away.
What should she do?
She certainly couldn’t win against him in strength.
If he came close to her, he would effortlessly grab the keys from her hand no matter how she tried to hide it.
Without thinking too deeply, Anne saw a small opening on the window. Just before he reached her, she tossed the key out of the window.
He suddenly stopped, eyes blazing as he growled,
"Have you lost your fucking mind?"
Anne instinctively put distance between herself and the man.
"You threw out the damn key!"
"I can get someone to open the door from the outside. I just have to make a call. But first, you have to tell me what I want to know."
He suddenly took two steps close to her with a ferociously threatening look, "Do you know what I do to people who make demands from me?"
Anne couldn’t keep her nervous heart under wraps anymore. Every time he would try to get close, she would sprint to the other direction, causing the man to become even more annoyed.
"Stay in one fucking place whenever I’m talking to you, or else I swear..."
"How can I wait to be hit and scolded? I’m not an idiot," she retorted.
"No, you’re the greatest idiot I’ve ever met." He threw those insulting words at her with a straight face, and all Anne could do was gasp.
This absolutely hateful man!
She wasn’t an idiot. In fact, she would argue that she was quite smart. She used to ace all her classes. What part of that made her an idiot?
However, before that train of thought could even be completed, the man shoved his hand into his coat and pulled out his phone.
"Did you think I wouldn’t be able to leave if you toss the key? Grow a brain first before you think you can outsmart me."
Anne was rendered speechless!
Right! Of course he would have a phone with him. He would call someone who would open the door for him, and he would leave without turning back, and the moment he did, her job would be gone too.
Dejection wafted into her instantly.
That was it!
She had indeed lost her job.
What had she even done to this hateful monster?
Now she would never know, nor would she ever have a chance to clear her name in his eyes.
However, from the corner of her eyes, she noticed how the man had gone stiff as he clutched his phone tightly as if the device had offended him greatly.
Her eyes lit up slightly as she looked keenly to see why he looked displeased with his phone.
His hand had pressed down on the power button, but even though he’d been holding it for quite a while, the phone didn’t light up.
Could it be... that his phone was actually dead?
A small smile began to make its way on Anne’s face.
It seemed it wasn’t completely hopeless after all.
However, her smile instantly vanished when the man suddenly raised his dark-as-night eyes to her sharply.
Actually, she wanted to laugh triumphantly in his smug face, but this man’s temper... no, she didn’t dare mess with him.
But the next moment she raised her gaze to his, she realized his eyes weren’t focused on her anymore, but he was looking around at the office, his gaze landing on her bag which she’d kept on a seat in the office.
Was he thinking of taking her phone?
Of course he was.
Before he could even actionize that thought, she sprinted towards the couch her bag was kept. She could feel him coming after her, striding with long steps to grab her.
Anne didn’t wait for him to get to her, she ran into the bathroom and locked the door behind her.
"Annelise Thompson, open this fucking door right now!" She heard his thunderous voice outside the door as he banged the door furiously.
She jolted a bit at his loud voice.
She was definitely in trouble!
She’d angered this giant ball of stormy temper.
But... she couldn’t stop the smile of triumph that came up on her face.
She’d outsmarted him!
She’d really outsmarted him. Now he would have no choice but to agree to any demands she made if he wanted to leave this office tonight.
