Chapter 50: Accusation!

Anne didn’t know why her heart suddenly thudded.

Was it in fear or something else?

Was her time up already?

Anne didn’t check the time, she had just been working and had almost forgotten that he’d only given her until seven PM.

Dread suddenly trailed up her spine.

Was she... was she really going to lose her job today?

But she had barely even started. She had barely gotten the chance to prove herself.

For the first time in a long time, she’d gotten a job, a stable job—she didn’t want to lose it.

"It appears you were all talk. I gave you seven hours to finish this job." His voice was thick and dark as he stepped towards her menacingly.

"If you’d focused on actually working instead of flirting with my brother, maybe you would have managed to get the work done by now."

"Flirting? I wasn’t flirting with—"

"What made you think I want to hear anything you have to say?" He cut her off sternly, his dark eyes sharply fixated on her with such annoyance it felt like she could melt into the floor.

"Bro, Anne has been working really hard. I was just trying to lighten her mood a little, so I made her laugh, she wasn’t slacking off." Donald spoke up to defend her. His intention had been to help, but he didn’t realize that the single action of calling her by her name had set the boiling waves in the man to intensify.

Anne?

Since when had Don been this familiar with a woman to address her name?

"Bro, Anne has already done enough now. Why don’t you—"

Without looking in his direction, Andrew raised his hand to silence him.

Donald knew that look on his brother’s face, but it astounded him. That was because the man didn’t get this upset by just anyone.

What had Anne done that could be so bad enough to make him look this angry?

Angry enough that it seemed he would bury someone alive.

"You’ve done more than enough, Don. Leave."

Donald didn’t react fast enough; his lack of action caused Andrew’s dark eyes to turn to him with a piercing glare. Donald felt a chill engulf him.

"But... what about Anne?" Donald dared to ask.

Actually, he normally wouldn’t dare to say a word if his brother looked like this, but he couldn’t hold back this time because he was scared of what his brother would do to the poor girl.

"If she has the nerve to flirt around with a Sterling son, she can have the nerve to face the consequences."

Anne felt indignant tears well up in her eyes.

Again with his defamation of her character.

It was becoming unbearable to keep hearing him make assumptions about her actions.

She could really never do anything good in his eyes, right?

Whatever she did, he would accuse her of trying to trap someone or flirting with someone.

"It’s okay, Donald, you can go now. I’ll be fine."

The man’s eyes flashed with a trace of lightning, one that threatened to strike someone down as her calm voice rang out.

"Bro, please don’t be too mad, she really really did her best..."

Andrew’s glare silenced the youth.

"I said leave. Now!"

Donald knew staying would further piss his brother off. He had no choice but to sigh in resignation and drop the cleaning stuff he’d been holding, then after giving Anne one last glance, he left the office.

When Donald’s footsteps faded, Andrew finally spoke up.

"Is this the task I gave you? You’re insatiable, aren’t you? Trying to seduce my little brother? You just won’t stop until you’ve captured a rich guy for yourself."

Anne knew he was her boss and she shouldn’t talk back to him, but she’d just had enough.

"Can you please stop accusing me of something I didn’t do? At this point, even if I did nothing but breathe, you would still think I was trying to trap someone! You think the worst of me and I can’t even begin to understand why. Why do you seem to hate me? Why do you always think the worst of me?" Her voice was a trembling mess as she yelled these words at him, but her pent-up emotions seemed to have burst out, and she couldn’t stop herself from angrily shoving at his chest, but he was like an immovable rock.

Why?

She dared to ask him why?

Did she think that he had the time to accuse just anyone?

Did she think he had the time to put just anyone in his eyes?

Yes, he did hate her!

He hated her for being greedy enough to make plans to trap a rich man!

He hated even more that it affected him.

"Yes, I think the worst of you. Do you think I accuse you without any proof?" He grabbed her arms tightly, speaking these words right to her face.

"Fine! If you’re so sure that I’m someone so low, someone so dirty, show me the so-called evidence."

"I don’t need to show you a fucking thing. I know you want nothing but money because you..." He suddenly stopped himself.

Realization dawned on him, and he gritted his teeth.

In his anger, he’d almost revealed himself to her. He’d almost said:

I know you want nothing but money because you sold yourself for ten million to me!

You want nothing but money, so much so you sold your own dignity.

"Women like you have no right to ask anything of me."

He shoved her away then turned decisively to walk away. However, he suddenly stopped.

He hadn’t stopped of his own will—something had grabbed hold of his sleeve.

No, it was her warm little palm, determinedly grabbing hold of his sleeve, stopping him from walking away.

Slowly, he turned around. First glancing at that soft hand which had suddenly gripped his sleeve, then up to her face.

Her brown eyes were shining with blazing fury. Tears were trailing down her tender face, and the anger he suddenly felt seemed to stop at once.

He felt his body go stiff in an instant.

He couldn’t take his eyes off the tears sliding down her face. Something about them made a sharp invisible object stifle his chest and tightened it.

He was feeling this suffocating ache, all because of seeing someone’s tears.

She grabbed his sleeve tightly without letting go.

"You don’t get to just leave after accusing me. Not until you tell me why you have such a low idea of me. What have I done to you?"
