Chapter 34: Why Was She Called?

She suddenly heard a loud squeal.

"Director Sterling! It’s Director Sterling!"

Anne’s typing hands instantly stopped, abruptly hovering over the keyboard.

Did she hear that right?

That arrogant man was here?

Why did he have to come to this department of all places in this company when she was trying her best to stay away from him?

If he happened to see her here, it wouldn’t have been her fault, right? She’d done her best to avoid him.

Don’t let me see your face again.

She could still remember his words vividly, and she had absolutely no problem keeping herself out of his sight.

Anne kept her head low even as all the other employees stood up to greet the man.

She knew she would stand out too much if she was the only one who remained seated while everyone was on their feet, so she slowly stood up, keeping her face down as much as she could to avoid being singled out from the crowd.

She followed the other employees’ echoed greeting.

Though her head was down, she could feel the man’s imposing presence, which made the spacious office feel like a tiny space. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

His presence exuded a loftiness that could be felt in the mere air around him.

You have no right to breathe the same air I do...

No wonder his words were always unbelievably arrogant. No wonder he felt so highly about himself.

He was like a king who commanded a great presence.

Anne could hear his crisp footsteps. He didn’t make any sound to acknowledge the greetings from all the staff members.

The more the sound of his footsteps got closer, the more Anne wanted the ground to open up so she could disappear. Every time she saw this man, he always had something bad to say to her. She couldn’t remember a single positive encounter with him.

She ceased breathing immediately his footsteps stopped. That was because she was staring right at his shiny black shoes, which had stopped right in front of her.

Her heart rate spiked, and when the man didn’t seem to move for a long time, she slowly raised her head.

Curiosity prompted her to, since she couldn’t fathom what he was doing stopping right in front of her work desk.

Her sight was met with a breath-stoppingly captivating sight of his profile.

He stopped in front of her work desk, but he wasn’t looking at her.

Anne knew he most likely would be thinking she wasn’t even worth him looking at.

This unbelievably arrogant, lofty-minded man!

He began to move once again, striding straight into Clara’s office while the young women of the department couldn’t stop squealing and giggling about his presence. No one seemed to wonder why he’d momentarily stopped near Anne’s desk, as they couldn’t associate someone like her with someone like him in the same sentence.

Anne let out a long sigh in relief.

It was such a relief that he hadn’t cared about her presence. At least she’d escaped any form of confrontation with him.

Seeing that he was fully gone from her sight, she sat back down and continued her work.

"Director Sterling is so damn hot! How can a man look that hot? Isn’t that, like, so sinful?" Rebecca raved in a very excited voice.

"I literally don’t care. I would eat a plate full of sand if it would give me the chance to make him look at me even once," Jessica replied giddily.

"Girl, what? I’d eat rocks!" Kendra chimed in enthusiastically.

"Do you guys think he secretly has a girlfriend? How can a man that hot possibly be single?" Rebecca added thoughtfully.

"Haven’t you heard? The man has impossibly high standards! I came across something online that said he once said in an interview that his ideal type of woman... does not exist."

They all gasped collectively.

"Doesn’t that mean that every other woman doesn’t meet up to his standard?"

"Exactly. That’s what he said. His standards are sky-high. But do you blame him? He’s handsome enough to have such high standards."

"I also heard that the renowned Kingsley clan’s heiress once sneaked into his suite when he was on a business trip. Apparently, she tried to attract him to her, but he didn’t even give her a single glance... mind you, this news came from a very reliable source." Kendra began in a gossip-hungry tone. "When she couldn’t attract him to fall for her, she snuck into his suite to try to seduce him. I heard she stripped naked to get him to take her to bed, but do you know what he did?"

The other two girls leaned in, caught up in the gossip, wanting to hear more.

Anne would admit, she was listening too. But that was only because the story sounded intriguing enough and because they were talking loud enough for her to hear, even though they thought they were whispering.

"...the news said that he threw her out of his room totally naked and burned her clothes in the fireplace. Many people were at the hotel that evening and they all witnessed the woman humiliated, naked."

"That’s so heartless. He did that to the Kingsley heiress? Isn’t she, like, one of the most beautiful women ranked in last year’s beauty list?"

"Allana Kingsley is definitely beautiful, and many people praise her for her perfect figure. I couldn’t believe the news myself, but there were pictures back then. They were quickly deleted. I think Allana used her connections to take the pictures down. The news went absolutely viral back then."

As Anne listened to the story, for some reason she was suddenly reminded of a familiar scene.

I love you!

That is your greatest mistake.

The scene was of the first time she’d seen the masked man outside the restaurant she used to work at.

That man... the first time she’d seen him, a beautiful woman had confessed to him, but he’d coldly turned her away.

Now that she thought about it, something about this arrogant Andrew Sterling and that masked person was a bit...

Before Anne could complete this thought, a kiss... soft and coaxing... returned to her in the form of a memory.

A flamingly muscular body covering her own on the bed, and an intrusion driving deep into that part of her body.

Her face flamed up and she shook her head, pushing out the memory. But with the reminder that tonight was another night she would have to go to the manor and experience that again, a thrilling anticipation she didn’t want to feel soared through her mind.

Why the hell did she have to remember that right now, when she had finally pushed it out of her mind and managed to focus on her work?

It was her fault for listening to gossip.

Anne chastised herself a bit before concentrating to focus on her work again.

However, when Clara’s office door opened, her head instantly swung up to look.

The person that emerged, however, was neither Clara nor the arrogantly lofty man. Instead, it was a young woman with sharp yet cute features.

She glanced around at all the employees for a while before she opened her mouth to call,

"Rebecca Devin and Anne Thompson, please follow me."

Anne stiffened.

Why had she been called?
