Chapter 247: Feed It To Me

Anne stared at him with an expression of paralyzed shock, her eyes were wide in amazement. It was akin to someone seeing what could only happen in a dream or a far fetched illusion happening in reality.

Andrew Sterling...he actually knew how to laugh?

She couldn’t believe it, her mouth had fallen open as she watched in utter disbelief.

It felt like the person in front of her was a completely different person from the one she knew everyday. This man in front of her had a radiant smile, one that looked disarming and the kind that instantly lit up all his rigid features which usually looked like they were carved in stone. Every part of his face had softened significantly.

It was a genuine, full hearted laugh that revealed perfectly aligned teeth, the rich warm baritone sound bounced off the kitchen walls, the corners of his mouth were curved deeply, forming faint lines that made Anne see nothing but warmth.

It felt extremely foreign to look at this usually cold face in laughter, soft and deep chuckling sounds as he looked at her like the funniest thing he’d ever seen.

His eyes were crinkled in amusement, showing an irresistible spark making his expression feel playful, a huge contrast to how he usually looked. Even when he was smirking lightly or had on a smile, he looked completely different from this moment. She had seen him smile before, she’d even seen something close to laughter but this... It was completely different.

Watching him, Anne suddenly felt her heart swell uncontrollably. The man in front of her looked boyish and adorable, like a youth you’d want to run your hands through his hair playfully. Laughter had transformed the usual severity around him into something open, young and breathtakingly handsome that it stole Anne’s breath staring at him.

It suddenly felt like a thousand year old glacier had cracked and inside it, one found something warm and extremely beautiful.

Such laughter was hearty in it’s own way, and somewhat contagious making her want to laugh along with him even if she wasn’t too sure what was funny.

"Are you really laughing, I’m not dreaming right?" It still felt so unbelievable to Anne that she had to ask, and the moment the question fell, the sound subsided, leaving a slow lingering smile on his face that fell slowly as he seemed to realize what had happened.

She suddenly felt like someone who had been given candy but a while later that candy was suddenly snatched before she could even get a taste of it.

He suddenly moved forward, grabbing her by the shoulders and turning her around. Right behind her there was a glass cabinet that reflected her face. Anne was confused at first as to why he suddenly flipped her around, but when she saw the reflection of her own face she couldn’t help but gasp audibly.

She caught a smile creep onto Andrew’s face, warming up his expression again into that harmless warmth she had seen a while ago.

"All you need now is a circus of your own right?" He whispered this in her ear with a light chuckle of amusement and Anne quickly covered her face with her palm to hide.

How had she gotten all that food coloring on her face?

And just now he said something about a circus, was he actually calling her a clown?

Just then, Anne heard a ding sound coming from the oven.

She quickly became alert, hurriedly sneaking away from where Andrew stood and rushing towards the oven where she pulled out a tray full of exquisite looking golden cookies.

Anne quickly fiddled around, recalling how the butler had told her that Andrew used to like those cookies.

Food tasted from the past brought nostalgia, and in her mission of replacing his bad memories with a good one, seeing how heartily he had laughed just now, it seemed she was getting some success.

Anne plated the cookies placing them in a small white dish, then drizzled a smooth later of creamy white icing on the top, and for a final touch added a glossy red cherry. It looked exactly as butler Jones had described since the old recipe book the butler had given her had no pictures.

Nervously holding up the small plate, Anne looked into Andrew’s face which still held a trace of harmlessness until his gaze settled on what she held on the plate.

That layer of coldness that seemed to have flown away suddenly returned and in a single second, he had become the Andrew Sterling she was used to all over again, but his expression didn’t make her give up.

"Butler Jones told me this was your favorite, so I made it for you to apologize." After Anne said this, silence fell.

A quick dart of emotions flew past his face all at once, she hadn’t caught what the other emotions might have been, but she caught a trace of reminiscence. Like someone who had taken a peek into his past and returned with nothing but bad memories. Seeing this, Anne suddenly had a doubt in her heart.

Was it really right to bring back something from his painful memories.

Anne thought about something and quickly moved her lips to say what came to her mind, when she heard him speak, his voice sounding really low as he asked,

"What exactly are you apologizing for Annelise?" He lifted his gaze from the plate she held to him and his eyes were fixed to her own.

"For... everything I said the other night. I was wrong."

He watched her face for a long time, so long that Anne didn’t know if she should say something or not.

She had already apologized. Was he still angry? Was it because of the cookies?

Seeing this Anne immediately retracted her hand holding out the plate to him but he suddenly gripped her wrist making Anne’s eyes meet his own with slight shock.

"If you’re going to apologize go all the way." He suddenly said with a raspy voice as he leaned closer lowering his head to her, "Feed it to me."

He looked disarmed again, as if there were no walls up against her in this moment, he stared at her expectantly like a kid waiting to be fed.

Anne was momentarily too stunned to move.
