Chapter 207: Only Family

Saturdays were Anne’s visiting days for Kristen. She stopped by a flower shop and bought a fresh bouquet which she always placed in the flower vase inside his hospital room, before heading to the hospital in a cab.

Anne stared out the window as the cab drove along the multi-lane highway. The sky above looked clear and bright painted with a few scattered white clouds that caught the warm afternoon sun, but the beautiful sight of the sky was nothing compared to the warm feeling still welling in her chest.

Several times she smiled to herself, her cheeks turning pink as if recalling something that made her heart flutter, however she quickly caught herself mid smiling along with the sweet fluttering inside her chest.

Her heart was racing so fast, she had to stop herself from having those memories constantly playing out in her mind.

She didn’t want to overthink or overanalyze her position in Andrew’s heart.

’If your mind ever thinks back to that night, then I want you to remember here and now.’

He had recreated their first night together, making it even more intimate than the actual first night they shared.

Anne was even more certain now that the man was different, lately he was acting different, as if slowly losing that rigid air in him that caused him to be mean and stoic to her in the past.

It felt somewhat exciting and frightening at the same time. She didn’t know what to think, so Anne decided not to think at all.

Their contract stated no emotions, no attachment, but last night had broken the most important rule in the contract.

She didn’t want to make conclusions about the status of their marriage, if she thought about it her heart might grow to have hope and hope was a dangerous thing that when shattered, it could ruin someone from the inside.

The outcome of the future between them was clear, have his child and leave. Loving someone meant wanting to stay, but it was a lot different from hoping, wanting was safer, sometimes we never end up having the things we want, hoping meant expectations and she was very scared of having expectations.

Anne knew nothing else mattered but the here and now, whatever this was going on between them, she liked it and she would let herself experience it without limiting herself, in the end whatever the future might bring, she would accept it wholeheartedly.

The cab stopped a small distance away from the hospital building which was somewhat unusual, "Sorry ma’am, I can only stop here. There’s something going on up ahead." The cab driver said.

Anne didn’t bother about it since it was a short walk away from the hospital anyway, after paying, Anne clutched the flower bouquets and alighted.

Last week when she had gone to see Kristen, the doctors had told her there was a stagnant progress. In the past Anne had desperately tried to find a way to pay for his surgery to keep him alive, even if the surgery hadn’t absolutely guaranteed Kristen waking up immediately, it took him out of danger. Back then it was like a dangerous knife was hanging over his head every single day and he was just alive by sheer luck. They had said that the surgery could help him wake up immediately or keep him alive for months. But Anne hadn’t expected the wait to be this long.

It felt like she was standing at the edge of an empty road, waiting... endlessly waiting for the only family she had left to come back to her, and as time passed by she would think the wait would soon come to an end, but it didn’t.

No, that wasn’t right...

Anne stopped walking, lightly touching her hand to her stomach.

Right Now Kristen wasn’t her only surviving family, she had another...the young life growing inside her. And whatever outcome her contract with this child’s father may be, she would still be in the child’s life, even if she had lost every right to be it’s mother by having taken the money in the contract, she still wanted to watch this child grow, see it smile, see it taking it’s first step, see it saying it’s first words, it was a term she had added to their contract, but the painful part was...even if she continued to see the child, she would never hear it address her as it’s mother.

These line of thoughts suddenly dampened Anne’s feelings. It felt like one moment she was soaring on clouds, reeling from the feelings from the previous night and the next she was dumped into cold water, a sudden awakening to reality.

As Anne proceeded into the hospital, she greeted some of the familiar hospital staff who she had come to become familiar with due to her frequently visiting. This time however, instead of welcoming her with smiles like they usually did, many of them seemed to look shocked that she was here.

She didn’t think too much of their reaction and proceeded to Kristen’s usual private unit in the hospital, for some reason, Anne had the feeling of being watched. As she walked dawn the plain white hallways, she couldn’t help but feel like several gazes were following her.

It was almost as if she was the main focus ever since she stepped in.

Weird, but it could just be her being too sensitive when there was nothing at all. However, the moment she reached the door to Kristen’s unit, someone suddenly called her name loudly from the far end of the hallway.

"Miss Thompson, wait!"

She stopped in her tracks turning as a familiar doctor hurried over to her.

"Doctor Whittaker." Anne greeted the man politely before watching him questioningly.

"Kristen is not in his unit right now." The man informed. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

"What do you mean, has he been moved?" A patient being taken out of his intensive care unit was quite dangerous, especially one with Kristen’s condition, hence Anne could only think that his unit had been changed.

"Not exactly miss Thompson, he is no longer in this hospital."

"What?" She couldn’t believe her ears, were they trying to kill her brother? "You must be joking doctor Whittaker, he can’t be taken out of the hospital! Please tell me that was a joke."

"Please be calm miss Thompson, we have..."

"How could you move my brother without my consent? What kind of policy does this hospital have? Where have you taken Kristen?"

"If you would only listen miss Thompson, your brother is..."

Several minutes later, Anne ran out of the hospital in a frenzied race after hearing what the doctor had to say.
