Bought For A Baby, Kept For A Lifetime-Chapter 171: Drunk?
Andrew didn’t know how long he continued to stay outside the door.
He recognized those words she said to him because something very similar had come out of his mouth earlier that day.
He didn’t even realize what he said to her was that bad until he heard it coming from her, until he heard the same words directed at him.
A sharp ache clenched his chest.
It burned as if lava was being poured into his heart.
Was this how she’d felt when he’d said that to her?
He recalled her tears and the burn intensified.
Why did he always end up doing and saying things to her he would end up regretting?
He suddenly began to pace outside her door back and forth for a very long time but that feeling inside him didn’t recede.
’...please, try to stay out of my life.’
Those words were harsh, meant to push someone away, meant to draw a line but it was that very line he suddenly realized he despised the most.
He suddenly didn’t like the idea of him being distant with her, he didn’t like the idea of a line being drawn between them yet the irony of it was, he himself had told her to draw that line in a fit of rage.
It turned out, being slapped with his own words would cause this much distress in his head.
A while later, the butler saw Andrew returning downstairs but he was coming down alone.
Had the mistress rejected him to his face?
Judging by how rigid his face looked, it seems she did.
"Master, should I serve dinner for one?" Though butler Jones felt like this wasn’t the moment to ask this question due to his master’s expression, he asked anyway because it seemed fun to indirectly tease him in this moment.
"It’s too late for dinner now, nevermind." He left these words before he was fully out the door.
Butler Jones looked down at the time. It was merely a few minutes past eight. Perhaps the master just didn’t want to eat anymore since the mistress had refused to eat with him.
The sound of the car starting made the butler realize that Andrew was going out, but where he was going this late was something the butler could only wonder.
.....
Shawn was standing outside a tall building, he glanced down at his wrist watch, sighed then proceeded to enter where a young female hostess greeted him respectfully.
The Elysian was a famous six star hotel that were known for serving the best meals in the whole of Verizon.
In the past, it was Shawn who used to invite Andrew here for a meal and catch-up. Shawn who had been about to study a particular case before going for surgery early the next day was called out by his friend all of a sudden, and of course he had to drop everything else to come see him.
He entered the elevator which took him to the top floor, they usually met at a rooftop lounge.
Shawn found Andrew near the bar at the rooftop lounge, the latter was dressed in casual attire as if he hadn’t stopped to change before coming out. Yet despite being in a casual outfit, his mere presence and the quiet confidence to his posture made him naturally feel domineering.
He was sipping from a small glass filled halfway with a clear brown liquid.
There seemed to be a quiet air of distress surrounding him which made a look of interest show up on Shawn’s face.
The last time he’d seen this type of look on Andrew’s face, the latter was handling a deal for the company and it was proving quite difficult to close that deal with the international companies involved in the collaboration, he’d had this same troubled look on his face.
Shawn walked up to the bar, signalling the bartender who understood that Shawn had asked for his usual drink and immediately started to pour it.
"Go ahead, tell me, what deal is it this time that you’re finding difficult? Is it worth over five hundred and eighty million dollars like the last one or is it even more?"
The bartender slid Shawn’s drink over to him and he immediately took a sip as he heard Andrew begin to speak.
"What does she think of me right now?"
Shawn was expecting a full on rant involving numbers, specs, market opportunity and company budgets, but he seemed to have heard a ’she’ in Andrew’s words just now which caused him to look at him questioningly.
"Who?" Shawn asked almost forgetting about the fact that there indeed was a ’she’ in Andrew’s life and this particular person was overturning the person Andrew used to be even without even realizing it.
Shawn instantly realized who Andrew was talking about.
"Are you talking about Anne?" Shawn asked again just as Andrew raised the glass and downed the entire contents.
"I wonder what she thinks of me. Maybe, she thinks I’m a monster."
Andrew’s voice sounded distant, and somewhat inaudibly hoarse.
"What’s new about that? You treat every woman so badly they eventually start seeing you as a monster." Shawn remarked before his eyes lit up with realization and he added,
"But...you don’t want Anne to see you as that right?"
If Andrew heard Shawn, he made no indication of it as he continued to speak from where he’d stopped earlier.
"Maybe, she hates me. Why wouldn’t she? I forced her to marry me with a contract, and as if that wasn’t enough, I yelled at her when she was trying to be nice to me."
Shawn narrowed his eyes as he quietly continued to listen while discreetly catching a glimpse of a number of empty bottles near the bartender.
What the heck? Just how much did Andrew drink?
Was he actually drunk?
As Shawn realized that, he immediately felt a premonition.
Oh no, this wasn’t good.
He’d only ever seen Andrew drunk once before, and the latter had drunk several bottles before the signs of alcohol even began to show in his eyes. Though there was one thing Shawn noticed whenever Andrew was drunk, it felt like the tight seal which was always over his mouth had been ripped off.
Andrew suddenly let out a low groan, his fingers digging through his hair as he muttered,
"I can’t fucking think straight when it comes to her."
Shawn sighed but didn’t say anything.
"Why? Why the hell do I always feel like this because of her?"
"Are you sure you don’t know the answer to that?" Shawn asked with a solemn look on his face seeing how stiff Andrew suddenly became before he slowly raised his head looking straight ahead emptily into the distance.
"I do. I know why."
