Bought For A Baby, Kept For A Lifetime-Chapter 148: Did He?
Clara’s words were disdainful and degrading. Her eyes filled with condescension.
"You already tried to harm me several times, do you think I’ll just let you get away with that?" Anne’s voice trembled slightly, showing the kind of anger she was keeping suppressed.
Clara merely laughed, her voice ringing soft and feminine.
"What will you do, go out and tell everyone about it? Even if you walk out there and tell people about it, no one will believe you. Like I said, you won’t be able to fight me. Money and position are the definition of power, and you have no power."
That conversation had ended there, Anne no longer deemed it worthy for her to keep exchanging words with Clara, she knew now what kind of a woman she was and the person behind Clara’s mask of kindness disgusted her.
Even as Anne was walking along the hallways of the executive floor in the company, on her way to carry out a work task, she couldn’t stop thinking about what Clara had said to her. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
And she realized with a sinking feeling that Clara was right.
What power did she have to fight back against Clara?
It was astounding how openly Clara challenged her to fight back.
The latter relied heavily on money and power, she thought they not only would serve as her weapon but as her shield as well and no one could harm her.
Anne knew Clara had shed all pretenses, which meant from now on if she found Anne as a threat she would attack her directly.
Clara was in love with Andrew, and she thought she would use her money and position to slither into his life.
Anne couldn’t help but wonder, if the latter came to know that the man she was coveting was currently her husband, how would she react?
But this information wasn’t Anne’s to tell, what good would come out of silencing Clara with a marriage that wasn’t even real?
As Anne rounded a corner, she was too lost in her thoughts to realize that she’d taken a wrong turn.
She was heading to deliver some documents to the executive floor but mistakenly took a turn towards the director’s office which was on that same floor.
She couldn’t help but remember how Andrew had entered Clara’s office the other day and how familiar they both seemed. It was as if they’d known each other for a long time.
Anne had never had this feeling before, but something strangely bitter rose up her throat.
That bitter feeling had yet to digest when she suddenly bumped into someone standing right in the middle of the path she was going.
When she came to her senses, extricating herself from the thoughts that she’d been immersed in she saw a broad manly chest in front of her.
The elegantly masculine scent drifting into her nose subconsciously made her recognize the man standing in front of her even before she’d raised her head to take a look.
Andrew had just come out of his office, having an important issue to deal with outside the company he’d been on the phone speaking to someone when he saw her walking over.
She seemed to be on her way to his office but then her gaze wasn’t focused, her steps were slow and she looked absentminded.
Andrew stopped in his tracks in the middle of the hallway as he noticed her, studying her face even from a distance as if trying to decipher what was bothering her.
Seeing the hints of distress from her furrowed brows he immediately hung up the call on his phone watching her approach him, but despite almost reaching him, she didn’t seem to notice he was there. It was as if she was too deeply engrossed in her own thoughts that made it evident that something was deeply bothering her.
Andrew’s brows furrowed deeply as she still continued walking until she hit him.
What could be bothering her enough to cause her to be so absentminded she didn’t even see him.
She looked shocked once she raised her head up to see him.
"What’s wrong?" The question instantly rumbled out of him without him realizing he’d let a hint of concern bleed through his tone.
She quickly took two steps backwards, making the frown on Andrew’s face grow deeper as he looked at the space between them.
"I’m sorry, I was carried away I didn’t see you coming." After apologizing she seemed to look for an excuse to leave his presence as she quietly said,
"I have to submit some files, I think I came the wrong way. I’ll get going now."
Immediately she turned to leave, he moved to grab her wrist, not realizing when he dragged her back towards him until there was only a very little distance between them.
He could perceive her scent when she was this close, and only when she was this close to him did it feel right.
He hated when she put distance between them, in fact he completely hated her moving away from him.
Something about the thought of her not wanting to be in the same space as he was made something tighten in his chest.
"I asked if something was wrong, you didn’t answer my question." He repeated trying to keep himself from enjoying the warmth of her body so close to his.
The executive floor was usually deserted, no one could be seen going around so in this moment, they were all alone with the pristine white walls of the hallway.
He’d been very busy since the moment he came to his office this morning, but every few seconds he found himself recalling that in a few hours, he would be going home.
Home...why had he never thought of the manor as such before, but now that he knew she’d be there, something inside him had automatically thought of it as home.
But only and only because she was there.
His hand was still wrapped around her wrist, he just didn’t want to let go, not with how he could feel the warmth of her skin against his, not with how he could feel the silky smoothness of her skin against his own.
He liked it just like this, having her close, looking into her eyes and talking to her.
The anticipation for the hours to go by had been powerfully making him restless that he couldn’t focus of work in the office, so he decided to tackle the kind of work that would take him outside the office but he didn’t expect to suddenly see her.
And it had felt like all the restlessness was suddenly flushed away.
"Nothing’s wrong, I just happened to take the wrong route."
Despite her reply he wasn’t convinced.
"Then why do you look like that?" She wanted to break eye contact and look away from him but he held her chin still, making her maintain holding his gaze as he asked her this.
"Look like... what?" She asked dazedly seemingly surprised at the way he gentle pressed his thumb to her chin keeping her gaze fixed on him.
"Look like you have something on your mind."
Had she been that obvious?
Why couldn’t she keep her emotions hidden, or was it that he was just seeing through her?
That momentary pause was something that didn’t go unnoticed by him, he seemed to be so certain something was wrong as he pressed her even more.
"Tell me, did something happen? Did someone say something to you?"
She was surprised he was asking her these questions just because he thought something was wrong.
What did it matter to him if someone did or said something to her?
As far as she knew he didn’t care about her, or...did he?
