Chapter 20 - Winds of Change (1/4)

[Back to the present]

Lying in the hospital bed, Bakugo's eyes slowly opened.

The room was empty, the silence broken only by the monotonous beeping of the monitor nearby. Sunlight filtered through the window, casting long shadows across the floor. Bakugo tried to move, but a sharp pain in his torso made him grunt and give up.

'What... happened?!' he wondered, staring at the sterile white ceiling. His head throbbed, and a deep ache coursed through his body, as if he had been crushed by an avalanche. He blinked, trying to piece together the fragments that slowly returned: U.S.J, Nomu, explosions, the impact, and then... darkness.

'Dammit!!' Bakugo sat up abruptly, ignoring the excruciating pain in his body.

He needed to know how the others were, if they were alive, if Aizawa was okay, if the Nomu had been defeated with that final blow. And Shigaraki... what the hell had that bastard done after he blacked out?

'Shit, I need to get out of here!' When Bakugo moved his hands to remove the electrodes from his chest, he froze at the sight of them.

Red, jagged lines cut across his palms and the backs of his hands, some still inflamed, others hardened into keloids. His fingers looked slightly misaligned, as if the bones had been patched back together. 'What the fuck is this? I look like that damn Deku...'

He opened and closed his hand, testing the stiffness. 'Feels the same...' But before he could examine them further, a sudden burning sensation erupted across his back. It felt as if someone had poured burning coals onto his skin, the pain so intense it made him gasp and hunch over on the bed. "ARGH!"

At that moment, the door to the room opened. Kirishima, dressed in patient clothes and holding a cup of coffee, entered and smiled wide upon seeing Bakugo awake. "Bakugo! You're awake—" His excited expression crumbled as he took in the sight of his friend.

"Get the fucking doctor!" Bakugo growled, his voice rough and heavy with pain.

[Twenty minutes later]

The room was now brighter, the ceiling lights turned on. Bakugo was leaning back in the bed, his face still twisted in a mix of pain and discomfort, though the sharp agony in his back had lessened thanks to the medication injected into his vein minutes earlier. The monitor beside him kept a steady rhythm, and the scent of antiseptic hung in the air.

A middle-aged doctor, wearing thin-framed glasses and holding a clipboard, stood next to the bed, reviewing the charts. He cleared his throat before speaking.

"Mr. Bakugou, I'm relieved to say that your condition is within expectations, given the circumstances," the doctor began, adjusting his glasses with a slight frown. "You suffered multiple injuries during the incident. Your hands, as you must have noticed, show several fractures and lacerations. We realigned the bones and treated the wounds, and with the aid of Recovery Girl's quirk, we believe there won't be any permanent damage aside from scarring and slight misalignment in your fingers. However, full recovery of mobility and sensitivity may take a few days. For now, it's imperative that you avoid using your Quirk to prevent aggravating the injuries."

'...this is the best outcome given the situation,' Bakugo nodded, taking in the words. "Alright, what else?"

The doctor hesitated for a moment, flipping through the clipboard before continuing. "You suffered punctured lungs, twelve broken ribs, and damage to your stomach, liver, and pancreas. As for the pain in your back, your skin was... burned from repeated impacts with the ground. In some areas, the injuries resemble third-degree burns. The medication we're administering should alleviate the pain, but you'll require frequent dressing changes and intensive care to avoid infections."

Bakugo stared at him, mouth slightly open. 'How the hell am I alive?'

Beside the bed, Kirishima placed a hand on his friend's shoulder. "Bakugo... you're a real man..." he said, his eyes shimmering with manly tears.

The doctor cleared his throat again, resuming. "You'll remain hospitalized for another two days before discharge. Any questions?"

"No," Bakugo replied, still processing everything.

"If you need anything, just press that button to call the nurse. Your mother should be in the cafeteria, but we've already informed her that you're awake."

"Ok..."

The doctor nodded and left, closing the door softly behind him.

As soon as they were alone, Kirishima burst out, unable to contain his emotions. "Dude, you were insane! The way you protected us and faced that thing? It was beyond manly... it was legendary—"

"Kirishima, stop talking nonsense and tell me what happened. Is everyone alright? Why are you here?!" Bakugo interrupted, asking frantically.

"Chill, man, everyone's alive thanks to you." Kirishima pulled a chair over, dragging it closer to the bed, and sat down, still glowing with admiration. "I didn't see much, because that monster knocked me out with a slap. But the others said you finished it off with an explosion so powerful the entire U.S.J. shook. Then Uraraka, Midoriya, Tsu, Yaoyorozu, and Todoroki found you under the rubble. Oh! And Midoriya took down the leader with a punch!"

"The leader was captured?" Bakugo's eyes widened. 'But All For One wouldn't allow that—'

"Yeah, but he got away afterward, along with that guy with the black mist. I don't really know the details, to be honest."

'Just as I thought,' Bakugo mused, his face hardening before he spoke again. "So, is everyone okay?"

"Yeah, I was the only one who got hurt besides you," Kirishima said, lowering his gaze for a moment, the shame evident before he composed himself again. "But don't worry about me. You had it worse, man."

"Tsk, it was just a few scratches," Bakugo retorted, flashing a cocky half-smile.

Kirishima chuckled, "Dude, I don't even know how you're sitting here talking to me."

"What about Aizawa?"

"..." Kirishima swallowed hard, his smile fading.

"Kirishima?"

"Aizawa-sensei is okay... but he lost an arm."
