Part 18: The Devil's Contract
Silence thickened between them, stretching into a tense stand-off. Leo could feel Dante watching him, waiting for a response. Hiroshi's jaw was set tight, his disapproval clear. But Lucian? The vampire prince looked utterly amused, his golden eyes gleaming as he swirled his wine no, blood as if the answer was already obvious.
"You hesitate," Lucian murmured, his voice smooth as silk. "Why? Is it fear? Or is it because you already know what you want?"
Leo inhaled slowly. His instincts screamed at him that this was dangerous. That nothing about a blood pact with a vampire could be trusted. But he also knew that Tensai-kai wasn't ready for whatever war was coming. If supernatural creatures were already in the game, they were outmatched. Outgunned.
They needed an edge.
And Lucian was offering one.
Hiroshi leaned in, his voice low but firm. "Leo, if you take this deal, it won't just be about power. A blood pact with a vampire means a connection. He'll own a part of you. You'll owe him."
Lucian chuckled. "Oh, dear Hiroshi, such harsh words. Owe is such a strong term. I prefer to think of it as... a partnership."
Leo turned to Lucian, ignoring the tension radiating from his team. "And what do you get out of this?"
Lucian's smirk widened. "I get what I always want, dear mafia prince. Influence. Control. And, of course..." He lifted his glass, golden eyes flashing. "A little taste of something new."
Dante muttered under his breath, "I really don't like this guy."
Leo ignored him. "Define 'influence and control.' Because I don't do servitude."
Lucian sighed, setting his glass down. "You wound me, truly. I have no interest in making you my pet. But a pact is a bond. I will know things about you. Your desires, your fears, your strengths. And if I call for a favor one day, well..." He spread his hands. "I expect it to be honored."
Leo clenched his jaw. He hated owing people. But could he really afford to walk away from this?

Hiroshi grabbed his wrist. "Don't. We'll find another way."
Lucian's smile never wavered. "Oh? Will you? Because from where I stand, the other way leads to death. And not just yours, Leo. Your men. Your little gang. Your family."
A slow chill crept down Leo's spine.
This wasn't just about him. Tensai-kai had followed him, trusted him. They were caught in the middle of a war they weren't prepared for.
And right now, Lucian was offering survival.
Leo exhaled through his nose, then held out his hand. "Fine. But if you try to control me, I will kill you."
Lucian laughed, rich and full. "Oh, I do love a man with bite." He reached into his coat, pulling out a small, curved dagger with an ornate silver handle.
"Shall we?"
The Pact is Sealed
The moment the blade bit into Leo's palm, the air seemed to shift. Something unseen slithered through the room-an invisible force pressing against his skin, humming with power.
Lucian made a small, shallow cut across his own palm. Black-red blood welled up, shimmering unnaturally under the dim lights. He clasped Leo's hand, their wounds meeting.
The second their blood mixed, fire shot through Leo's veins.
His breath caught. His heart pounded wildly, every muscle tensing as something ancient curled around his soul, sinking its claws into him. He could feel Lucian his presence like a whisper in the back of his mind, cold and sharp.
For a moment, his vision blurred, flickering between the dimly lit auction hall and something else. A vast, endless darkness filled with unseen eyes. A cold voice murmuring in a language he didn't understand.
And then it was gone.
Lucian released his grip, licking the remaining blood off his own palm. His golden eyes burned. "Congratulations, Leo Fujiwara. You are now... more."
Leo exhaled, flexing his fingers. He felt the same. No sudden super strength, no insane abilities. But something had changed. He could feel it.
Like a pulse beneath his skin.
Dante swore. "That was the creepiest thing I've ever seen."
Hiroshi looked furious. "You just made a deal with a monster, Leo."
Leo met Lucian's gaze. "Yeah. But now I know how to fight them."
Lucian simply smiled. "We'll see."
The Awakening
By the time they left the auction, the city air felt different. Crisper. Sharper. Leo rolled his shoulders, but the strange sensation beneath his skin remained. It wasn't pain. It was... awareness.
He could hear things more clearly. The distant hum of an engine, the faint murmuring of a couple arguing three blocks away. The scent of rain, even though the sky was clear.
Dante nudged him. "So, do you feel like a vampire yet?"
Leo smirked. "Not unless vampires still need coffee."
But Hiroshi wasn't amused. "We need to monitor you. Blood pacts can have side effects."
Leo shrugged. "So I'll deal with them. What matters is that we're not walking into this war blind."
Hiroshi exhaled sharply but didn't argue. "Then let's hope you didn't just sell your soul, Fujiwara."
Leo glanced at his palm, where the cut had already begun to heal unnaturally fast.
Yeah.
Let's hope.
