Chapter 144: Chapter 144

"What was that?!" Valindra asked, jolting out of her sleep as she heard and felt the large explosions.

"Dunno, an attack maybe?" They both got up, putting on some clothes, peering through the window to see what was going on. Fire raged, people screamed, and demonic elves flooded the streets, killing everyone in sight.

"My god! We’re under attack again! I-I have to find my mother!" Valindra rushed for the door, only to stop when she noticed Zion wasn’t following her.

"What are you doing? Come on!" She urged

Zion pointed at the window, shaking his head with a slight chuckle. "That right there, that’s bait."

"Bait? What do you mean?"

"Go help your mother, there’s something I have to check out." He looked out the window once more, smiling as he saw a figure cut down the demonic elves. "And it looks like Nimreth is awake now."

"Fine." She ran toward Zion, giving him a kiss on the lips before parting. "Be safe."

He chuckled. "Babe, that’s exactly what I WON’T be doing."

---

[There are smaller attacks throughout all of Alfheim, but since everything that’s important resides in the capital, the majority of the destruction happened here.] Tessa informed Zion.

"And the Fae houses?"

[Two have been attacked.]

"The Barahads?"

[Untouched]

"Bingo."

Zion flew toward the Barahad Estate, flying over fire, destruction, and death. Truthfully, it didn’t bother him seeing people die like that. He pitied them for not being able to defend themselves as best as they could, but such is life in an eat or be eaten world.

Once he arrived at the Barahad Estate, he flew downward, spotting Throinrod giving orders as many of his personal knights were sent to aid the people of Alfheim. As he landed, his nano-tech armor materialized onto his body, preparing for a fight that he knew was going to happen.

"Apostle Zion, it seems you were wrong. The demons, or whoever they are, attacked the other two fae houses. They even attacked the city once more to act as a distraction. I’m sending my support now. You should join them."

"Sorry, but you’re falling victim to the demon’s schemes." Zion informed

Thorinrod tilted his head in confusion. "I’m not sure I follow."

"My take is that everything is a distraction. You’re house already has the weakest security, and the Royal family, alongside the fae families, can’t afford to lower their security, especially after what happened to your home. Then, all of a sudden, they attack two fae families as well as the city without even glancing at your home? Yeah, I think not."

"A double distraction," Thorinrod concluded

"Exactly."

"Shit! Follow me!"

The two of them raced inside, making their way toward the vault where the sapling was being kept.

"You go to the vault, I’ll see if that fake guard left his room," Zion shouted

"Got it!"

The split up, each of them going their own way.

"Okay, you slimy bastard, open up!" Zion shouted as he kicked down the door. He completely engulfed the room with holy power, creating a barrier out of it to prevent any escape attempts. But when he looked around, no one was there.

"Oh, come on!" He left the room, racing toward the vault.

On Thorinrod’s side, he saw a trail of corpses, the new guards whom he managed to station here to guard the vault. Their numbers weren’t as great as the previous 150, but he had hoped the now 45 of them could at least hold the line, even if it was only for a bit.

"L-Lord Thorinrod." A guard winced, calling out to him.

"Stay with me! Explain what happened here!"

"T-The vault," The guard coughed violently, regurgitating blood. "They’ve entered the vault!" Those were the last words the guard managed to get out before he died.

"Damn it! I don’t know how they got in—but I’ll be damned if I let them leave with that sapling. Even if it costs me my life, I’ll stop them."

With grim resolve, he strode to the wall and pressed his palm against the stone. Just like the vault in the royal castle, a glowing magic circle flared to life beneath his hand. The ancient seal responded to his touch, unraveling with a soft hum. Slowly, the wall shifted, revealing the hidden passage to the vault beyond.

Once the passageway opened, he ran toward the vault, opening that seal as well, and once he did, he saw it, what he was hoping to see, the sapling safe and sound, still with Zion’s holy barrier around it.

"No, you idiot! Why would you open the door?!" Zion raced down the hall, shouting at Thorinrod for falling into such an obvious trap.

Then, something moved from inside of Thorinrod’s shadow. It was brief, but Zion noticed it.

"Move!" He shouted, hurling a blast of holy power toward Thorinrod’s shadow, but to Zion’s horror, his attack was completely nullified, and a being who resembled an assassin emerged, stabbing Thorinrod in the chest.

The dying guard, who turned out to be the fake guard, leaped up, attempting to stop Zion, be he was casually killed with a single stroke of his hand.

"Hahaha! Thanks for the gift, stupid elf. I’ll be taking this." She swiped the holy barrier away, getting hold of the sapling and placing it into a subspace, but Zion was right behind her with a sword made of holy power in his hand, ready to cut her down.

"Zion Zagan," the woman said with a smirk, her voice smooth and laced with amusement. She didn’t so much as blink when his blade shot toward her neck.

The infernal energy coiling around her flared, effortlessly devouring the holy power in his strike like smoke in the wind. "I wasn’t expecting you," she added with a chuckle, eyes gleaming. "This just got interesting."

"Put the sapling down you bitch!" He demanded, now fully encased in armor while in his divine apostle form, combined with his runic body and all of his other powers.

"So rude, do you kiss your mother with that mouth?"

"I’m like this because my mother kissed me with her foul mouth, now do as I say and put the sapling down before I kill you."

"Will you kill me if I obey your command?" She asked, her voice full of curiosity

"Depends. I have a hard time killing attractive women, so if you’re hot, I might let you go. Maybe."

"Aww, that’s unfortunate. While I’m confident in my looks, I can’t show you my face. Organization policies."

"Don’t worry, I completely understand," Zion nodded

"Thank you for being understanding, sweetie."

"No problem," Zion said coldly. "I’ll just have to kill you, then." In the blink of an eye, he was in front of her—his hand blazing with raw, unrestrained power. There was no hesitation, no mercy. With a force strong enough to punch through a mountain, he drove his fist toward her, aiming to end it in a single devastating blow.

What he expected was simple: for the woman to erupt into a pool of blood, or at the very least, for a gaping hole to be torn through her body. Zion would’ve even settled for her being launched through the building, crashing into rubble, or just lying unconscious on the floor. Anything but what actually happened.

Instead, the woman caught his punch as if it were the least dangerous thing in existence. No hesitation, no fear, and she wasn’t even pushed back. She stared at him, and even though her face was obscured, even Zion knew she was looking at him with a stare that asked, ’Is that all you got?’

"Are you fucking serio-" He was blasted out of the room before he could finish his sentence.
