Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Am I Falling for Him

Adrian groaned lightly, though he didn’t pull away. "Stop. Don’t ’baby’ me."

"But you are my baby from now on," Matteo teased, his voice low and vibrating with a rare trace of affection.

"Suit yourself," Adrian muttered. "Now get off me. I want to clean up."

"No," Matteo said, wrapping his arms even tighter around Adrian, pinning him to the sheets. He stayed silent for a moment before speaking again. "In the morning, before you leave... I want to introduce my twin brother to you."

Adrian went still. His heart gave a strange thump in his chest as he processed the words. He thought back to the man he had seen briefly in the hallway, the one who looked exactly like the man holding him now.

Finally, Adrian thought. I’ll get to see him again.

A heavy silence filled the room. After a moment, Matteo released him, allowing Adrian to stand.

"I need a shower," Adrian muttered, his voice still a bit raspy.

"I’m coming with you," Matteo said. He didn’t ask; he just followed.

Adrian shot him a look but didn’t argue.

The shower didn’t stay simple. Matteo teased him under the running water, turning what should have been quick into something else entirely.

Adrian let out a quiet breath. "Showering with you was a bad decision."

Matteo only smiled.

When they came back to the bedroom, their skin was still warm from the shower. Adrian moved to the far edge of the bed without thinking, putting space between them.

"Don’t treat me like a stranger, Adrian," Matteo said. "We’re past that now."

Adrian hesitated, but he was too tired to argue. He moved a little closer, letting Matteo pull him into his arms. Matteo reached over and turned off the main lights, leaving only the soft glow of the bedside lamps.

"No, leave them," Adrian murmured.

"You don’t have to be scared," Matteo murmured, tightening his hold. "I’m right here. I’ll be awake before you even move. You’re safe."

Adrian rested his head against Matteo’s arm, but his mind wouldn’t slow down.

What is happening to me? He wondered.

Why am I letting him get this close?

He swallowed, his thoughts turning uneasy.

He’s a man... I shouldn’t be feeling this.

He tried to convince himself it was just the tension from everything that happened, or maybe the wine. But the way his heart reacted every time Matteo touched him told a different story.

The next morning. Adrian woke up slowly, his head slightly heavy.

Matteo was already awake, seated in the armchair with his laptop open, completely focused.

"You’re awake," Matteo said without looking up.

Adrian sat up, rubbing his forehead.

Matteo noticed. "You have a headache?"

"A little."

"I’ll have something brought up."

A few minutes later, tea was served.

Adrian took a sip, letting out a quiet breath.

"I have to leave soon," he said. "I have work at the studio."

"Get dressed," Matteo said, closing his laptop. "I want you to meet my brother before you go."

"We’re driving to his place?" Adrian asked, pulling on his clothes.

"Just get dressed," Matteo replied.

Adrian shrugged. "Okay."

"Do you want breakfast before you leave?" Matteo asked.

"I’m fine," Adrian said. "I’ll eat at work."

A few minutes later, Matteo led him down a long, quiet hallway and stopped in front of a heavy oak door. He knocked once, then pushed it open.

Mark was still asleep.

Matteo walked in and sat on the edge of the bed.

"He’s sleeping, Matteo. We should go," Adrian whispered, feeling like they were intruding.

Matteo ignored him.

"Mark."

"Don’t wake him," Adrian muttered.

Mark stirred, then slowly opened his eyes. When he saw Matteo, he blinked. "You’re here?"

Matteo gave a small smirk. "Morning."

Mark rubbed his forehead. "My head..."

"You drank too much last night," Matteo said.

"Not that much," Mark muttered, then looked at him. "Why are you here this early?"

Matteo tilted his head toward Adrian.

That was when Mark noticed him.

"Mark," Matteo said, "this is Adrian... my boyfriend-to-be."

Adrian almost choked.

Boyfriend?

Mark pushed himself up, brushing his hair back.

Adrian stared.

"...Wow."

The word slipped out before he could stop it.

"You both look so... alike."

Mark gave a tired smile, softer than Matteo’s. "We’re twins. That’s kind of how it works." 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

Adrian shook his head. "No, seriously... You look the same."

Mark just nodded. "Yeah."

It didn’t last long.

Matteo glanced at Adrian. "He has to leave."

Mark nodded. "We’ll talk some other time properly."

Adrian gave a small nod. "Yeah... It’s nice to meet you."

Mark looked at Matteo. "Come see me later. I need to talk to you."

"I will," Matteo said.

They left the room and headed downstairs.

As they walked toward the car, Adrian couldn’t stop talking.

"Your brother is actually really cool."

Inside the car, he leaned back, still thinking about it.

"Your brother is calm... different from you," Adrian said. "And he just woke up, but his face still looked so clean and fresh. He’s actually really fine, Matteo."

Matteo’s hand tightened slightly, his jaw going rigid.

Adrian didn’t notice. "He has this vibe—"

"Can you just be quiet for a second? Stop it," Matteo cut in.

"Are you jealous?" Adrian asked, teasing.

Matteo looked at him for a moment, taking in the way Adrian was smiling.

"Yeah... I am," he said finally. "So can you keep quiet now?"

Adrian blinked, then smirked. "You’re jealous of your own brother?"

"We have the same face," Matteo muttered. "It’s not like he’s better looking than me."

Adrian leaned back. "No... he actually is. You just don’t see it."

Matteo turned to look at him again.

Adrian smiled, completely unaware of what he was doing.

Matteo stayed quiet for the rest of the drive, his mood turning heavy. The air in the car felt thick with it. By the time they pulled up at Adrian’s studio, Adrian finally noticed the shift.

He opened the door to get out, but paused, looking at Matteo’s stony expression. "Are you really that jealous?"

Matteo didn’t answer, staring straight ahead.

Adrian opened the door, then paused.

"Okay... I’m leaving."

No answer.

Adrian leaned back in, quickly pressing a kiss to Matteo’s cheek before jumping out of the car and heading for the studio doors.

Matteo froze. He touched his cheek, a genuine, shocked smile breaking through the grumpy mask. He caught his driver and Harry looking at him through the rearview mirror and immediately straightened his tie, trying to regain his composure.

He rolled down the window as Adrian reached the door. "I’ll pick you up after work!"

"Okay!" Adrian called back, not looking around.

Matteo sat back, a smug grin firmly on his face. "Drive," he told the driver. "Back to the estate."

After Matteo dropped him off, Adrian went straight into the studio.

The air inside was thick with the smell of oil paint and turpentine. Kate and James were already at their easels, focused on a large commission for a new client.

Adrian tried to work, but his mind kept drifting.

Every time he picked up a brush, Matteo slipped back into his thoughts, the look on his face when he got jealous, the weight of him against the bed, and that soft, unexpected smile he had seen in the car.

Adrian let out a quiet laugh, shaking his head at his canvas.

So this was the man everyone called the devil of the city...

And yet, around him, he acted like someone who didn’t even know how to hide what he felt.

Adrian frowned slightly, staring at nothing.

So what is this feeling?

"Okay... what’s going on with you?"

Adrian blinked and looked up.

Kate was standing in front of him, arms crossed, watching him closely.

"Adrian, you’ve been staring at that same line for twenty minutes, and giggling to yourself. What’s going on with you?"

Adrian cleared his throat, trying to look busy. "Nothing. Just... thinking about a friend’s situation."

"A friend?" Kate raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced. "She sat down. Tell me."

Adrian hesitated, then set everything in his hands aside before starting.

"Okay, so... this friend of mine. He met this guy. Everyone says this guy is a total monster, like the devil himself. But with my friend, he’s... different. He’s actually nice. Protective."

Kate crossed her arms, listening intently. "Go on."

"My friend is straight," Adrian continued quickly, his voice dropping. "But they had sex. Just once. It was a mistake, obviously. But now, my friend keeps thinking about him. He finds himself wanting to be near him, even though he tells himself it’s wrong. He sees this guy and feels... something. I don’t know. Is my friend gay?"

Kate let out a small, knowing chuckle. "Maybe not gay. He could be bisexual. Or maybe he just likes this specific guy."

"No," Adrian insisted, waving a hand dismissively. "He’s never liked men. This was just a one-time thing. A mistake."

"Was it?" Kate asked, her eyes searching his. "How did he feel after it happened? What’s he feeling now?"

"He’s confused," Adrian said. "He keeps telling himself the guy is a man, so he shouldn’t feel anything. But then the guy does something, like getting jealous or being sweet, and my friend just... loses his train of thought."

Kate sighed and stood up, placing a hand on Adrian’s shoulder. "Adrian, be real with me. Your ’friend’ is falling for that guy."

"No!" Adrian snapped back, his heart racing. "How is that possible? He’s straight! They are both men! It was just sex!"

"Adrian," Kate said firmly, her voice softening. "You... I mean, your friend... is falling hard for him. You can try to label it ’straight’ or ’a mistake’ all you want, but the heart doesn’t care about your labels."

Adrian went quiet, his grip tightening on his trousers. He wanted to argue, to say she was wrong, but the memory of how he had kissed Matteo’s cheek that morning felt like a heavy weight in his chest.

Then he thought, Am I really falling for him?
