Chapter 36: Ch 36: The Letter

’What am I doing? I should read the letter sent by Sera immediately. So... why am I hesitating?’

Prince Kaiden looked at the letter lying on the table side with a melancholic expression. He wanted to reach for that letter and read it, but something in him told him that it would be a bad idea.

A huge part of him told him to keep staying by Shuu’s side and just focus on him. He was having a hard time because of Prince Kaiden.

’But the letter is written by Sera. All I am doing is for her sake. Even Shuu’s presence by my side is for her sake, since she cannot take my desires...’

Prince Kaiden suddenly stopped, feeling that it was not the case. A weird feeling told him that he might regret this all in the future.

But he dismissed it because he was sure he would not regret it all. Sera was the only one for him. He had decided this a long time ago. He would keep her safe... even if he had to sacrifice Shuu.

’Will you be able to do that? Shuu has become important to you, right? If you have to choose between his life and Sera’s, will you be able to abandon him...?’

A small part of Prince Kaiden asked him, and he paused, not being able to immediately answer the question.

That hesitation made him grit his teeth, and he shook his head.

"Of course I can make that decision. I am doing it all for her."

He reminded himself before he grabbed the letter and stood up. He needed to read it as soon as possible to put an end to his feelings and reassure himself about his devotion to Sera.

Prince Kaiden grabbed the letter and got out of bed, not realizing that Shuu was awake and listening to it all.

He quickly took the letter to another room’s balcony to read it.

[Dear Prince,

How are you doing? I am doing fine now. The royal doctors are taking care of me well, but I do miss your presence terribly and wish you were by my side. I don’t like the pitiful looks the staff gives me just because I am weak and sick. So I think I will take a companion to keep me company... of course, an animal one.

Speaking of companions, I heard that you recently took a companion. Don’t be too harsh on the poor thing. Not everyone can keep up with your harshness... not that I have faced any of it, because you have been incredibly gentle with me my whole life.

Anyway, I wanted to tell you that I look forward to meeting your companion when you come back. Make sure you bring him to me. I am looking forward to showing him how strong our bond is and also helping him find his own destiny. Make sure to come back soon.

Your Sera.]

The letter was simple and so much like Sera that Prince Kaiden should have felt happy. But for some reason, the last part irked him.

"What does Sera mean by ’helping Shuu find his own destiny?’ He is my companion. Of course, he will stay by my side..."

Prince Kaiden complained, feeling irritated with Sera, before he paused. He had marked Shuu and made sure Shuu was capable of carrying his offspring, but that... did not mean he wanted to be with Shuu for life.

Once he had the medicine for Sera, he and Sera would get married. Then, what would happen to Shuu? Keeping him as a mistress would be an insult to both him and Sera, and Prince Kaiden would not do that to Sera.

But letting him go... also did not feel like something he could do.

"Let’s cross that bridge once it comes. I am feeling infatuated with Shuu right now because of that mark and resemblance to Sera. I am sure I will go back to normal once I have Sera in front of me. I just need to make sure no accidents take place before that."

By that, Prince Kaiden meant that he could not get Shuu pregnant. His body had almost adapted to the companion magic and would be fully receptive to pregnancy now.

So it was time to hold back and take measures...

Prince Kaiden folded the letter and put it into his inventory space using magic. It was a skill most magicians could use. He quickly moved toward the door in order to head back, but he instantly heard movement outside the door.

He forced the door open, ready to impale the person on the other side, only to see that it was Shuu, who was walking around on unsteady legs.

Prince Kaiden’s anger and annoyance melted away within seconds as he looked at Shuu’s face, and he felt worried.

"What are you doing out here? You should be in bed and recovering..."

Prince Kaiden asked, and Shuu looked around carefully. It almost seemed as if he had no knowledge of where he was.

"I... wanted to go somewhere. But I don’t recall where. I think I must have sleepwalked or something."

Shuu spoke softly, and his voice sounded hoarse. His fever was back, and Prince Kaiden felt sorry and responsible for him. He quickly reached for Shuu’s body and pulled it off the ground.

"Let’s get you back to bed. Your body needs to recover if you want to accompany me on the journey. I don’t want you to become even more sick than this."

Shuu did not complain as he was picked up. But his lack of weight worried Prince Kaiden. He felt like Shuu’s sickness had finally caused him to become even weaker than he was before.

The worry felt mutual, and Shuu finally listened to him as well. But for some reason, Prince Kaiden felt like there was an invisible rift between them now. He could tell that Shuu had a lot he wanted to say, but he was holding back.

And even Prince Kaiden felt like he did not have enough courage to ask him about it.

In the end, Shuu was not able to recover by the time they needed to leave. But they had no choice but to move forward either.
