Chapter 230: Ch 230: Adopting a Child is not easy

Rin looked back at Shuu without saying anything else. It was a little unnerving for Shuu to wait for Rin to make a decision, and the wait made him play with his hands in nervousness.

Seeing him behave like this made Rin blink, and he finally made a decision about what he wanted to do.

"I... do want to be part of our family... officially. Caelis might not be happy, but I want it."

Aging up had not only improved Rin’s vocabulary, but it seemed to have matured him as well. He was speaking well for a child his age, and Shuu felt something inside him easing up once he heard Rin’s words.

"You... want that as well? That’s good. Then let’s go and get you registered first as my ward. We can worry about money later." 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Unfortunately, that plan did not work out well.

This world was different from Shuu’s previous world. Not only did it have too many noisy people interested in his business, but it also had an over-dependency on money.

No matter what you did, you required money, and that included the adoption of a kid. And the first thing Shuu got asked when he wanted to adopt Rin was his salary range and whether he would be able to take care of Rin or not.

That stumped Shuu because he had not expected such an obstacle, and he did not know what to do.

The policeman noticed Shuu’s hesitation and then looked at the kid beside him. His eyes narrowed, and suspicion started to sneak into them.

"Excuse me, sir, but are you kidnapping a kid and trying to get the police involved? I might have to look more into this case. Would you mind telling me how you are related to this kid and why you want to adopt him?"

The suspicious police officer asked as he kept looking at Rin.

Rin looked zoned out, and his lack of interest in anything almost made it feel like he was drugged out of his mind. It was not a good picture for Shuu, who just wanted to appear normal in front of the police.

"Relationship? I guess you could say that I have been taking care of Rin ever since I found him as a baby abandoned by his parents. I don’t have much else to tell you. But I promise you I am not kidnapping Rin or anything."

Shuu promised, but the police officer did not seem to care about what he had to say.

’Tsk, this is getting difficult. Maybe it was a bad idea to come here to adopt Rin today.’

If Shuu had known that things were going to be like this, then he would have gotten a job first and then adopted Rin. He was sure he would get a lot fewer questions that way.

The police officer looked troubled, and in the end he decided that it would be best to look into this situation. Kidnapping cases like these were rather common these days, and he did not want to lose his job over this.

"Sir, I am afraid that I will have to put you behind bars for investigation. We will also be keeping Rin in custody until we are sure that it is safe for him to be around others. Hey kid, come here-"

Rin did not like being touched by strangers. So as soon as the police officer turned toward him and tried to grab him, Rin used his abilities.

The officer went flying and slammed into the wall hard.

Anyone who saw this looked shocked by this sudden burst of power. But Shuu was the only one who reacted and grabbed Rin’s shoulders.

The sudden burst of unconditional guiding made Rin relax, and he dropped his power output and blinked up at Shuu.

"Rin, it’s alright. No one is going to do anything to us here. It is safe for us to be here like this."

Shuu promised softly, and Rin waited for a moment before he slowly let the hold he had over the officer vanish completely.

The assaulted officer coughed as he tried to get his breath back. But it was hard for him to shake off all the pain when his back was hurting because of the impact.

"Tsk, this kid is an esper? And a strong one at that? Did you want to adopt him knowing that? Is that your goal?"

Another officer asked, trying to piece things together. This was turning into a conspiracy theory game that was tiring for Shuu.

He almost let Rin have another go at the police but decided to keep calming the kid at the last second. That was the saving grace for these officers, and they did not even seem to know it.

Only the officer who had been assaulted shook his head and looked in front of him with annoyed eyes. But they soon turned to a look of understanding as he caught his breath.

"So, you are a guide and your ward is an esper? I am an esper as well, so I can tell the signs of guiding. Did you feel responsible for this child and decide to adopt him? That makes much more sense than whatever lie you were telling me."

Technically, Shuu had not lied about anything up until now. He had only twisted the truth a little to avoid causing suspicion.

Still, the fact that this officer was taking it so seriously made Shuu feel like his efforts were not in vain.

"I am a guide, but not a very strong one. I wanted to give this kid a stable home, so I decided to adopt him. I know that it’s suspicious, but I do not mean to harm Rin in any way."

Shuu promised, and the officer scoffed as he took his seat.

"I doubt a guide like you would be able to harm an esper anyway. Especially one who seems to have a temper like this. I can tell by how he behaves with you-you’ll be just fine."
