"I do have something I need to talk to you about, Emperor Kaiden. But that can wait until you are finished working. I can wait here for now."
It was much easier for Danielle to breathe with Emperor Kaiden around, and she wanted to maximize her time there. That was why she was willing to wait this time, even though she had never waited before for anything.
Emperor Kaiden gave her an annoyed glance that made her heart sink, but before she could defend herself, he went back to work and ignored her.
Every second Danielle spent near Emperor Kaiden felt like an eternity. She wanted to hear his voice and talk to him. She wanted the emperor to smile at her and tell her about the things he liked and did not like.
But at the same time, she did not want to push the emperor too much because he was fragile, and she did not want to stress him. Her emotions and reason were fighting inside her head at the moment.
’This is so annoying...ugh, are these thoughts really mine? I never felt anything romantic for my brother-in-law before, so why all of a sudden?’
Of course, she knew the culprit. It was sitting on her hand. But she was not willing to accept the fact that she had become a victim of the goddess’s mark.
"Princess Danielle, you seem to be in a hurry. Let’s have our talk first so that you can leave."
Emperor Kaiden decided, and he finally looked at Danielle. He had been observing her for some time before making that decision.
Joy filled Danielle’s heart as soon as she was noticed by him, but she did her best to squash that feeling and not allow it to control her. Instead, she gave the emperor an impassive smile and walked toward his table.
"I would like to talk to you without anyone else listening in. Can you make sure of it?"
Her demand immediately made the guards and other aides interested in what she had to say. They became alert but pretended not to be interested in her business.
But Danielle had no time to waste on them.
The only one she needed to make a decision was the emperor, who was currently looking at her with an interested expression. Then, he turned to look at everyone behind her and sighed.
"Alright, I suppose I can do something like that for Yunn’s fiancée."
He agreed before turning to look at everyone behind her and giving them a blank look. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
"Everyone, you can leave now. I will call you if I need your help. Until then, you are all not needed."
Everyone paused to give Emperor Kaiden a disappointed look. Their eyes asked the same question-do we have to leave?
But Emperor Kaiden was unwilling to hear anyone out. His eyes swept over everyone with the same intensity as before.
Finally, the guards and workers began to leave one by one...only to stop outside the door and press their ears against it to listen inside.
Unfortunately for them, Emperor Kaiden erected a barrier around the room and then turned toward Princess Danielle to continue their talk.
"So, what was so important that you had to send everyone out before having this talk with me?"
He asked, and Princess Danielle sighed before she pulled off the glove she had been wearing. The goddess’s mark shone brightly on her hand, clearly showing what the problem was at the moment.
"As you can see, I have been marked by the goddess. Now, let me tell you this beforehand-this was not my idea. I did not want to get branded by the goddess either. I have no idea why I was ’chosen’ by her. But it’s an intense feeling that is forcing me to have feelings for you."
Princess Danielle confessed as she did her best to hold herself back. But despite her ironclad control, she was not able to help herself.
Her marked hand moved toward Emperor Kaiden’s cheeks, and she tried her best to resist the motion.
"This mark is too dangerous. It is overtaking my will to make me fall for you, even when I do not want to. It is bad for me, and I am currently conscious of what is going on. I imagine that it would be much worse for the others who have this mark and are unaware..."
Princess Danielle expected Emperor Kaiden to be startled by this discovery. But the look on Kaiden’s face told her that he was already aware of all this.
It tore a hysterical laugh from her throat, and Danielle pulled her hand back.
"You knew? You knew all this and still-! Are you a monster? But even still...why can’t I stop? I don’t want to love you...I love Yunn...I gave up my life and future for him. I..."
The door opened, and Danielle paused, looking like a deer caught in the headlights. She looked at the door with wide eyes, only to see Prince Yunn standing there with Shuu and a few more people behind him.
No one moved for a second, and Danielle noticed how Yunn’s eyes moved from her hand over to her arm and then toward his brother’s face before his gaze hardened.
Misunderstanding was already filling his eyes, but Danielle did not know what to do about this.
Sigh
"What a mess. I am sure that there is a perfectly reasonable explanation behind this. As far as I know, Kaiden won’t cheat on me. And Princess Danielle has no reason to risk her position in the imperial palace by doing such a thing either."
Shuu, out of everyone, stepped forward and spoke. His voice sounded certain, and that caused everyone to calm down as well.
"T-That’s right. We must have opened the door at the wrong time and caused a misunderstanding."
"Hmm...we should allow them both to explain themselves before we jump to conclusions. That will help us out a lot."
Everyone agreed, except Prince Yunn. His dark eyes looked at Danielle as if she had betrayed him.
