Things had changed after the meeting. The maids and guards of the imperial palace had always been dismissive to Shuu, but now they were outright showing it.

Breakfast was late, and no one came to inform Shuu about anything important.

Usually, it would have been fine with him, but the behaviour had extended itself to Caelis and Rin as well. And that felt unacceptable to Shuu.

It was hardly noticeable at the moment, but because Shuu was sensitive about these things, it was easy for him to notice such malice.

’They are not even trying to hide it at this point. But I guess I should have expected this from the guards. It must be because of what happened to Lady Elysia.’

This world held deep faith in the goddess and her words. As such, they considered anything that went against her decree to be a danger.

Shuu’s existence was already a big sour spot for them all. But the fact that Emperor Kaiden, the hero, refused to follow the goddess’s will must have become an even bigger sour spot for these people.

But if they thought that Shuu was going to sit back and do nothing, then they were mistaken about him.

If the maids were going to ignore him, then he would make it such that they would not be able to ignore him.

Shuu and the two kids were the only ones sitting at the dining table during dinner time.

Prince Yunn was busy dealing with the council’s mess, and Princess Danielle also had some work to do. Lady Canarie had also decided to opt out of coming, which left Shuu and the kids alone.

And perhaps that was why the maids decided to play a small trick on him.

Shuu looked down at the plate of food that looked redder than usual. It was clearly tampered with, and he took a quick bite, only to cough and grab the glass of water in front of him.

’This is too spicy. Even I cannot handle this spice. How can the kids ever remain alright after eating this?’

Shuu’s eyes looked at the other food items, and most of them looked tampered with. If this was a joke, then this was not a good one.

Especially since it could hurt the kids sitting beside him.

"Is something wrong, Companion Shuu? You have not even touched your food yet..."

The maid in charge of dinner preparations asked with a calm look on her face. But behind her mask was her contempt and anger at seeing Shuu sitting at the dining table.

One look at her eyes was enough to tell Shuu her thoughts. In the eyes of the maid in charge (and other maids), he did not deserve to sit at this dining table and command them.

Shuu wanted to say that he understood their feelings, but this time, he did not. He did not want to understand either, especially since these people intended to harm the children as well.

So he decided to take a book out of Princess Danielle’s pages, and he gave the head maid a serious look.

"This food looks good, but I do feel a little bit bad that you all have to watch me eat it. In that case, I will share it all with you. As for me and the kids...I would like something light. I am also in the mood to take a look at the kitchen."

Shuu’s words made the maid in charge and the other maids panic. They looked at the weird food with horrified expressions, but they did not say anything.

After all, what could they say here that would present them in a decent light?

In the end, the maid in charge gave a small bow and gestured for the other maids to grab the dishes and take them away.

"I understand. I am sure the kitchen staff would be delighted to have you visit them."

The maid in charge told Shuu this with a neutral look on her face. But he could read between the lines, and he knew that the kitchen staff would not like his presence.

And yet, he had no intention of staying back at the moment.

With a smile on his face, Shuu grabbed the kids’ hands and went to the kitchen.

It was safe to say that dinner that day was fine. But there was no telling how long this harassment would last.

’Kaiden, when will you come back? I am beginning to miss you a lot...’

The emperor could be a handful, but he had his uses. And most importantly, he liked Shuu and made it such that people were not able to mess with Shuu.

It was a precious feeling he had not even realized he was missing.

’I want you to come back as soon as you can. Please, come back to me soon...’

Shuu closed his eyes with those last thoughts, and finally, the exhausting day came to an end for him.

But while he slept with the kids, there were other things going on in the shadows around him that he was unaware of-dangers that had yet to come.

"What do we do now?"

"The emperor has gone mad! How can he treat the two envoys of the goddess like that?"

"The goddess is trying to tell him to choose the right thing. So how can he disregard her will and choose someone unworthy like his current companion?"

The large temple hall was filled with people of all ages and sizes. They had covered their faces with their robes, but that did nothing to hide who they were or why they had gathered.

Slowly, the unhappy voices grew louder and louder until no one could hear anyone else over their own words.

Seeing such a mess, the leader of the gathering stepped forward and decided to smack his cane on the ground.

That caused everyone to pause and look at the man standing in the middle of the stage with curious eyes.

Once everyone had calmed down, the cloaked figure finally felt it was safe to speak.

"Everyone, thank you for coming here today. Since you all made it here, I take it that you agree with my objective. We cannot allow Emperor Kaiden to be misled by his ’fake’ companion. We need to make sure the goddess’s will is upheld."
