Chapter 346: 346: A Trap

Eden had a finger over his chin as he shook his head. "Taking their soul doesn’t necessarily mean killing them..."

Eden explained, "When they take a person’s soul—or in some cases, their spirit core—the person still stays alive. But they’ve lost something vital inside. They live like empty shells, existing without purpose or reason. Just like a breeze blowing through the air. They’re still alive and can do things, but they’re empty inside."

"In some cases, they fall sick later on and die. And in other cases, the person using this magic can choose to take their life for a more efficient result," he explained.

Helen and Adrian slowly nodded while they listened to him. Helen said, "When they took the lives of my parents and my people... it seems they went for the extreme means."

Eden nodded in agreement. "They do that when they’re desperate. When it’s urgent. Then killing for a faster response is best."

Helen gasped. "Monsters..."

Eden hesitated before adding, "...but what’s strange is why this spell is being used at all. It’s used by someone who wishes to attain immortality or superhuman power. Or someone who wants to sustain their life..." Eden paused, his mind drifting for a second before he continued, "It’s a very powerful spell. And looking at the aim... why is it even being used? Who needs it...?"

Eden had some thoughts, but he didn’t push it further. At least not now.

"But the Emperor wants the Wizard of EL dead. He hates magic and what it’s done—at least, that’s the logic that has been pushed," Adrian said. "So how...?"

Eden smiled. "Isn’t it obvious? He wants the Wizard of EL gone, potentially to take what I have and get rid of the threat to his plans."

The two thought about it, nodding.

"That’s a huge one..." Adrian sighed. "It’s getting messier than I thought. I think we should calm down for now. Because if the Emperor is using such spells, he’s certainly out to get you or track you down. So let’s lay low for now and see how things go..."

Eden slowly nodded. "That makes sense. We should at least see what he’s going to do next. After that, we can decide the next step to take."

They all nodded in agreement as Eden turned and stared at Helen. He could see the panic and detest in her expression. He could imagine the pain that had resurfaced.

With a smile, he laid a hand on her shoulder, calming her down. "Don’t worry about it. I’m here, and we’ll help you get to the bottom of it and get your revenge. Even if he’s the Emperor," he assured.

Helen smiled back at him with a nod. "Thanks a lot. I appreciate it."

They sat there as the carriage moved. Eden looked out through the window as his mind drifted to the thought of Elvis and Lysander.

He had seen them in a sharp vision. It had been long since he had last seen them, and so the sight of them reminded him how much he missed them.

He had gotten excited at the sight of them. And he had also panicked seeing them being drained. So he had been triggered to use extra power and cleanse everything faster before it took any slight effect.

He wanted to meet them quickly, but it didn’t seem like the right time. So all he could hope was that they were fine.

At least until the next time they officially met again.

He smiled at the thought of seeing their faces again while he admired the performances still going on down the streets.

The next day didn’t get any better or bring good news.

Rather, it brought news that spread like wildfire through the capital city: the two princes of the Kingdom of Valencrest stole the Emperor’s Imperial Plaque and were being held hostage.

It was official news all around, and it was also confirmed that they’d be beheaded the next day for their grave crime of attempted treason against the Empire.

The three of them were at the dining table for breakfast that morning when one of Adrian’s men brought the news to him.

They were in a house owned by Adrian. He had houses in his name around the Empire, and the capital city was no exception.

After the guard was done giving Adrian the news, he left as Adrian shared it with Eden and Helen.

Eden’s expression went pale in shock. "What? Treason? Beheading? What the hell...?"

"How is that possible...?" Helen hesitated. "That doesn’t make any sense at all. I don’t think they’d do anything stupid like that. They have no reason to."

Adrian sighed. "It’s obvious they didn’t do it. It’s all political plans and schemes. So I’m more than sure the Emperor framed them to use it against them."

He sighed as he added, "He’s always hated the Valencrest Kingdom after Queen Elizabeth took over. So this might be his way of gaining control."

Eden was silent. His mind ran through the news while he found himself making endless speculations about it, trying to put himself together.

"I don’t think that’s the reason in this situation..." Eden said after a moment of silence. They both stared at him.

Eden sighed as he said, "What a scheming man that bastard is. It’s his way of pulling me in. He wants me to come. It’s more of an invitation. A threat."

Helen slowly nodded. "Ah. I see. It’s no news that you and the princes are extremely close. So he is using that to pull you in. He made sure the news goes around so you’ll hear it and come today for them..."

Eden nodded. "Exactly."

Adrian leaned back in his seat. "So what now? What are you planning on doing? Are you going to go there and fall right into his obvious plan?"

Eden hesitated, staring into thin air while thinking for a while before he replied, "Yes. I will."
