Chapter 311: 311: Imperial City.

They set off on their trip.

Eden and Helen sat in the carriage opposite each other as the ride set off, moving through the bustling cities and soon into the woods.

Lenny lay there on the chair beside Eden. He was in the form of a cat while he looked up from time to time, gazing outside as if he was checking if they had arrived.

The ride was longer than expected. They spent two nights on the trip, stopping at places they booked to rest and then continuing the next day. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"We’ll be arriving today," Helen said while looking out the carriage. "That’s good news, at least."

"That’s good then. I’m not a fan of long journeys and didn’t know this would be so long either," he smiled as he stared out the window.

They were on a path that seemed rather deserted, one that would lead them to the Imperial City.

"How come they didn’t recognise you in those houses where we stopped to book a room?" she asked Eden.

He shrugged. "I use some tricks to make my face look different from how it really is. They might look at my face but see someone else."

"Ah, makes sense," Helen nodded with a smile. "You’ll definitely need that a lot when we get to the capital city so you don’t get recognised. I mean, that’s the place where most people want you dead. They must know your face pretty well."

Eden nodded. "Figured. That’s why I think this will be a good idea then."

They were quiet for a while before Eden decided to ask, "Speaking of which, I think there are things we still have to discuss."

"What?"

Eden stared at her for a while. "What happened?"

"Huh?"

"I mean, how are you suddenly staying with Adrian? How did you save me? And why is he your master and all? I’m curious..." Eden stared at her.

He knew the story plot was changing, but he still didn’t understand what this change was all about.

Helen smiled as she said, "The Grand Marquis saved and trained me."

Eden raised an eyebrow. "Huh? How?"

She smiled, staring through the window. "I want to get revenge for my parents. I think their death had something to do with the imperial family. I don’t think it’s a coincidence, so I want to get my revenge against them."

Eden blinked, staring at her. Now that was the last thing he’d expect to hear from the main female character of this novel. She wanted anything but revenge!

"Huh?"

She smiled. "Before I came here, I actually stayed in the imperial city with my family. We stayed happily in a little area in the farmlands, our little community," she smiled. "We were all happy."

She continued, "But then suddenly there was a massacre. It was at night, so it wasn’t so clear how it happened. But I did... at least I saw and heard some things..." she said, staring out the window.

Eden stared at her. He was shocked by this revelation, but still sympathetic. It was as if the backstory for the female lead was getting more and more complex, with layers.

The story grew more layers. And Eden didn’t expect this storyline from her at all. But the plot was already here, and she was playing it.

"Some strange men had killed everyone. It was a strange method of killing... it didn’t seem like they used force or weapons, but everyone died except me. Afterwards, they did something before leaving. I heard a man’s voice... he seemed like the leader of the gang, because he was giving instructions."

"And then he spoke some phrases that I didn’t understand at all, as though he was speaking another language. And after that, I heard them say something about reporting to the Imperial Palace about the job being done..."

Eden blinked. That was shocking. She spoke with such conviction that he was certain she wasn’t lying at all. Eden was sure she really did see something like that.

And he was certain it certainly had something to do with the imperial family. She was the female lead after all. The only person who would survive a well-planned imperial massacre, untouched.

The only person who was meant to "accidentally" live and get bullied for surviving while being tagged a curse. The only one who would suffer through it and fight to get revenge. She was the female lead.

"So I think someone in the imperial palace is behind this. That’s why I wanted to get my revenge. I have been trying to gather power behind the scenes. And one day when I was almost killed, Adrian saved me. I had told him about everything, and he promised to help me."

"He trained me in the arts of war, honed my skills and all," she smiled. "And that’s how I’m good at fighting. So I decided to take him as my master and help him with some tasks, becoming his little spy and running errands for him to repay him and also hone my skills."

Eden nodded. It all made sense to him now. "I see," he said. He was still shocked by how much the story had changed, but he figured he should be used to it by now, at least.

"I’m sorry about that..." Eden said.

"Don’t mention it. If you sympathise with me, I want you to instead help me by being my other mentor," she requested.

"Huh? How?"

"Well, the thing is," Helen explained, "I’ve always admired you for a while now. Even in our brief meetings, I’ve always looked for ways to get closer to you. But fate always tore us apart. I guess I wasn’t tactical enough to get close to you..."

Eden blinked. "Huh?" His mind suddenly came up with something. "Ah, sorry, I don’t like girls, so please don’t—"

"What?" Helen stared at him and then laughed. "What are you talking about? I don’t mean that I LIKE you."

Eden blinked. "Huh?"
