Chapter 273: 273: You pulled the wrong trigger

He recalled it all too well. The way Queen Elizabeth had knelt before him years ago, begging in tears while pulling at his legs.

Years when he had killed Leo’s parents and the King and Queen of Levrick Kingdom. Years when he had discovered that Queen Elizabeth knew his secret. And so he had proceeded to end her.

She was a threat then. She wasn’t one to be trusted. King Edward knew the lady he married. And he knew she was one to be scheming and calculative. The lady he had married had been a lively and smart woman.

So all he had to do was kill her—internally.

And so he had used her son against her, her most prized possession. He had used him against her and watched as she died inside.

She had begged. Queen Elizabeth had knelt in tears, begging him to let her son out of this. She had begged desperately as though asking for oxygen.

But King Edward had refused all her pleading while kicking her hands off his feet. He had been cold to her while making sure he killed the once lively woman he knew. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

King Edward knew that part of her was the threat. The part of her that was bold and proactive. So he killed that part of her with his plan. Killing her self-confidence and willpower. And making her someone to trample upon so she would never rise again. So she would never stand up against him again and try exposing his secret.

As it flashed through his eyes, King Edward gasped while staring at her. It had been years. A long time ago.

"You’ve been... planning this all these while...?" he questioned.

She smiled. "Precisely. Ever since that day, I took an oath that I wouldn’t let you get what you want. And that I would take you down and set myself free again." She laughed.

Queen Elizabeth said, "Your Highness, you were scared of me. You were scared of what I could do. You knew I could take you down back then. You knew me too well. And so you decided to use it all against me."

She laughed as the King shook his head. "No... no... you’re overthinking. I didn’t mean it. I was just doing what’s best for both of us. I was just protecting us..."

"Protecting us?" she questioned. "What rubbish."

She said, her expression now cold, "I loved you."

The words were simple. But they cut through a thousand emotions. "I loved you. I gave up all for you. I trusted you. They warned me against marrying a royalty." She laughed, but emotions ran wild across her face. "Being a noble was enough madness."

"But I never listened. Because I believed you were different. I believed you’d be different. And so I was going to stand by you. But what did I get?"

She laughed as she continued. "At first you treated me like an angel. You treated me so differently that I thought you were the one." She laughed at herself. "How foolish. Little did I know you were making use of me."

She turned as she said, "You thought I didn’t know? You made use of me to secure your throne. I worked for you. Because I loved you, I did all in my power politically to make sure you sat on that throne."

"I used my wit and connections. I pulled all the strings I could pull. I did everything in my power to make sure you sat on that throne. And you did. You became the King. Just as you wanted. I PUT you on that THRONE." She turned to him. "And what did I get in return?"

He glared at her, his face pale. He shook his head, muttering, "No... no... no... no..."

Queen Elizabeth smiled. "I saw a change in everything about you when you rose to the throne." She scoffed. "You grew different towards me. But I ignored it." She laughed. "It was nothing. It was nothing. Like a mantra, I kept telling myself those lies..."

"I guess you got ambitious. You became like the rest. You became what I prayed you wouldn’t. And I still thought it was nothing. But as time came, you knew you had to kill me."

Her cold eyes were on him. "You feared I’d tear you down because you knew I am capable of doing so. And so you decided to kill that part of me capable of doing so."

"You used the only thing I cared about against me. You shattered all confidence I had. You brought in your secret lover, whom you had a kid with behind my back, and made her step on me." She laughed. "It was your way. To protect your so-called legacy, you had to get rid of me."

"No... I didn’t... I didn’t..." King Edward shook his head. He only feared his death and nothing else. He didn’t have any remorse for what he did. All he prayed for was to survive this.

Queen Elizabeth didn’t even bother listening to his mutters. She slowly walked up to him, their faces close as she smiled. "I was your foundation. I was your stepping stone to where you are. I made you into this. But you made a deal with the devil."

She scoffed. "You thought you could fight me? You thought you could take down the brains that manipulated the royal court and made you a king?" She laughed. "How naive."

He stared in fear, realization hitting him that he had made a huge mistake all through.

"You thought I’d sit back all these years without doing anything? That I’d accept your insults along with your concubine trampling and just do nothing because I want peace? You really thought the woman who put you on your throne would sit back and do nothing because you used her son against her?"

She laughed, staring at his pale face. "You really are dumb. You underestimated the devil."
