Chapter 59: My Husband Stealing My Mother

In the middle of the night, Arcane woke up and intended to go to the bathroom. When he was done, he intended to return to his room. However, as he passed through the living room, he saw someone sitting alone.

A woman with long brown hair was sitting with her back to him. Arcane knew it was Megara, his husband’s mother. But what was she doing alone in the living room?

Slowly, he walked towards her, as if wanting to know what she was doing at that moment. And when he approached her, for some reason, he felt a familiar feeling, like the one he felt towards his own mother.

Megara, who was knitting, immediately turned to her son in-law. "Oh, Arcane."

She smiled, a smile so gentle that he could see it adorning her face. For a moment, he thought it was his own mother’s face. But he quickly shook his head, bringing himself back to reality.

"I was just going to the bathroom. Why are you here alone... Mother?" he asked.

"I’m knitting a scarf for Julian. Tomorrow evening, you two will return to the big city. Since it’s winter now, I want to make him a knitted scarf," she replied.

Arcane knew that knitting a scarf by hand took quite a long time. But Megara continued to knit a green scarf that matched her son’s hair. Her gaze was so warm, as if she were knitting with love.

Imagining Julian’s face feeling warm with the scarf she made. Slowly, Arcane sat down on the sofa next to Megara. He knew it was silly, but he felt a little jealous of Julian, who still had his family intact and loved him.

"Go back to sleep. You’ll be driving all night to get home this afternoon. Don’t get too tired," she said softly, focusing on her knitting.

He didn’t answer, nor did he leave. He just sat there without saying anything. Arcane just wanted to feel this feeling one more time.

’Damn, I’m look like a little kid. Why do I feel this way? Sigh... Even a 27 year old man like me still needs feelings like this,’ he thought at that moment.

"It must be really hard, right? Going through everything alone. Trying to find out about your own father," Megara said suddenly.

Arcane had explained about it to Megara and Louis, although not in detail. Megara felt so sad when she found out more about it from Julian.

"You had to bear all that burden alone, even when you were still young." She turned to him with a gentle smile.

"When I lost my mother, I felt so devastated and didn’t know what to do, even though I had many siblings and my father was still with me." Megara remembered her youth when she also lost her mother. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

She placed her knitted scarf on the table and took Arcane’s hand. "But you’ve managed to survive on your own so strongly. Carrying all the burdens on your shoulders. You’re so strong, Arcane."

"I..." His voice began to tremble as he heard that.

"Even though I’m not the mother who gave birth to you and we only met yesterday, I’m very proud of you for surviving this far. For becoming a good man and having a bright future as a teacher. I’m sure your mother would be even more proud than that... You’re extraordinary..."

Her hand reached for Arcane’s face, which was staring at her with wide eyes. However, without him realizing it, tears were already streaming down his face.

"You’re a good boy, Arcane. I’m proud of you." In his eyes, she seemed to see his own mother smiling at him while saying those words.

"Mother... I..."

Megara moved closer to the man and hugged him. She stroked Arcane’s head as if he were her own son.

"You have taken very good care of yourself. You worked hard for it, even making other people’s lives better. Julian, your friends, even your students," she whispered.

He buried his face in her shoulder, his body trembling. He felt the warm embrace of a mother he had longed for. Megara knew the feelings would never be the same as hugging his own mother, but she hoped she could help Arcane feel much better.

"Mother... I’ve tried..."

"Yes, and you’ve done well. Thank you for your hard work in getting this far."

She continued to rub his back and head while whispering words to calm him down.

An hour later, Julian woke up from his sleep when he realized his husband was not beside him. He sat up and rubbed his eyes.

"Mnn Arcane? Where is he?" he muttered, still half asleep.

Slowly, he got out of bed to look for him. When he left the room, he saw the living room light on. Thinking the man was there, Julian went to the living room and peeked in.

"Arcane?"

He walked closer and found his mother there instead. His mother was sitting there, stroking Arcane’s head as he slept on the sofa with his head in her lap.

This was quite a surprise for Julian. He had never seen Arcane like this before. But before he could ask any questions, his mother put her index finger to her lips. She asked him not to speak so as not to wake Arcane, who was sleeping.

Understanding this, Julian smiled and nodded his head. He was sure that something might have happened before he woke up. But for now, Julian chose not to ask any questions and went back to his room.

The next day, in the evening, Julian and Arcane were getting ready to return to their homes in the big city. Arcane put their belongings in the trunk of his car.

"This is for you guys. Mom made some food for you to eat on the trip. I’m sure you’ll get hungry on the way," said Megara, handing them a box of food.

She then took a paper bag containing another box of food. "And here’s some food you can heat up at home for breakfast. I’m sure Arcane will be too tired to cook. So just put it in the fridge and heat it up in the microwave."

"Mom, you brought us so much food," said Julian, who received it all.

"I wish I could have given you more. But I didn’t have time to make everything." The woman then put on a scarf that she had finally finished making for him.

Julian could see his mother’s fingers covered in small bandages after knitting all day and cooking for him and Arcane. He felt guilty for not being able to stay longer.

"Arcane, I know this is excessive, but please take care of my son," Louis said, patting Arcane on the shoulder.

"Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of him," replied Arcane.

He then turned to Megara and hugged her. "I have to go, but I promise I’ll come back when I have a longer vacation. I’ll visit you guys."

She smiled and hugged Arcane back. She kissed him lightly on the temple. "Of course, I’ll wait for you both to come back."

A smile appeared on Julian’s face as he saw Arcane and his mother so close. His parents seemed to already consider Arcane their own son. To break the sadness between them, he said something that made them laugh.

"What is this? My husband is stealing my mother’s attention from me?" he asked, pretending to pout.

They turned to her and laughed. Arcane released his embrace, letting her take turns hugging Julian and kissing his forehead and both cheeks.

"Mom and dad will miss you. Come often, the house will always be open to you."

And that night, Julian and Arcane left the Thorne residence. A heavy feeling enveloped them both, but they had responsibilities in the city to attend to.

Arcane’s hand reached for his husband’s and held it gently.

"Don’t be sad. We’ll visit again another time."
