Chapter 107: The Bitter Truth

An hour after Arcane woke up from his faint, they finally received news about Donald, who had just finished surgery. Marshal went downstairs to the hospital room where Arcane was staying.

"So how is he? What did the doctor say about my father?" asked Arcane, impatient to hear the explanation.

"I’ll explain, but you have to be prepared for whatever I say."

That sentence was enough to make Arcane and Julian know that the answer would surely be the worst they had ever heard.

And sure enough, the good news was that Donald had been saved by the doctors. His wounds could be covered up even though he had lost a lot of blood. However, the bad news was that the man had not yet passed the critical stage.

"The doctor estimates that your father could experience this for an unknown period of time. So they can’t predict when he will wake up," said Marshal, explaining what the doctor had told him earlier.

He himself felt deeply concerned about the situation. Julian looked shocked upon hearing that, especially Arcane, who remained silent without saying a word.

In some fields of study, when someone reacts to bad news, it is a natural reaction for a person. Such as crying, denying reality, feeling overwhelmed, or other similar responses.

But if someone just stays silent, like they have nothing to say, and their eyes are so empty, that’s actually the worst reaction they can have. It’s like their brain can’t process the news they’ve received. This is something that some doctors are very concerned about.

"I’m sure Mr. Stamford will get through this just fine. After all, he’s a strong man like you, Arcane! He will surely wake up in a few days. And after that, everything will be fine, as if nothing had happened!"

Julian tried to break the silence and encourage Arcane not to feel sad. He said that this storm would surely pass soon. He would be there for Arcane, supporting him to accompany his father until he woke up from his coma.

For a moment, Arcane remained silent without saying anything, until he asked them to take him to his father. Marshal said that Donald had not yet been moved to a regular ward, but he would try to ask the nurse about it.

The man left the room again to ask for more information about Donald. They were sure that the man would be admitted to the ICU until his condition improved.

Julian turned back to Arcane and sat down beside him.

"What should I do? Now my father is in a coma. And that damn woman is at the police station. I hope she never gets out of there," said Arcane, clutching the blanket tightly.

His eyes narrowed sharply, as if expressing hatred toward the woman. At the same time, he felt confused about what to do because he knew his two half-siblings had no one else with them.

Donald was in a coma and had to spend his time in the hospital. Meanwhile, Alina would definitely be in prison for a long time. Then who would take care of the two of them?

That’s when Arcane made a decision that he felt was also his responsibility.

"I think I have to do it. Even though they are only half siblings, I am the only family member who can take care of them."

He felt that this incident was also his fault, and that the two of them would be his responsibility until Donald got through the critical period and woke up from his coma.

"I’m proud of you. Even though they don’t know who you are yet, you’re thinking of taking on that responsibility. But don’t do it because you feel guilty, do it because they are part of your family," said Julian, holding his hand.

Arcane nodded his head. He did consider the two of them as his family. And as the eldest brother, he had to take care of them.

A faint smile and confidence returned to his handsome face, making Julian feel so happy that Arcane had managed to get through his sadness and pain. Even though he still felt that his husband had to take on a huge responsibility at this uncontrollable time.

A few hours later, Donald was transferred to the ICU, and only one person was allowed to visit him at a time.

Since Arcane was there at the time, Julian helped him into the room, sat him down in a chair, and then left Arcane alone with Donald.

Now he saw his father hooked up to several life support machines. He reached for the middle-aged man’s hand and held it gently.

"Father, I kept my promise not to go meet Mom before you. But you also promised to stay by my side and do everything we never got to do as father and son. That’s why I don’t want you to leave now," he said, his voice beginning to tremble.

"I want you to stay here with me. I know you really want to see Mom, but I’m also sure Mom would want us to spend time together first before we go to join her."

He couldn’t say anything else. The ICU room had grown so quiet, with only the steady beep of the heart monitor filling the air. He tried to hold back his tears, swallowing the pain alone.

"Father, don’t worry. I’ll take care of my siblings while you’re here. But promise me you’ll wake up because I can’t take care of them alone. They still need you. I don’t want them to grow up without you like I did."

Arcane sighed, not knowing if his father could hear him or not. But he had said it and promised to take care of Stefano and Sofia. And he wouldn’t let anything happen to them.

After 15 minutes in the room, the nurse said it was time for Arcane to leave because visiting hours were over.

"I’m sorry, but our protocol is quite strict for visits to the ICU," said the nurse.

"It’s okay, I’m done talking to him."

The nurse then helped Arcane leave the room and meet Julian again. They then returned to Arcane’s hospital room, as the man had not yet fully recovered.

In the ICU room, Donald, who was still unconscious, seemed to respond to Arcane’s apology for what had happened. He had blamed himself for the incident.

Tears streamed from Donald’s old, wrinkled eyes, as if he felt sad for Arcane, who blamed himself.

’It’s not your fault. I did it because you are my son.’
