Chapter 450: Cut leashes

Kellen was invited to the meeting after lunch. Kellen felt like his skin was prickling because he couldn’t believe that they had scheduled a meeting after lunch. Lunch! When Pamela had arrived on the front lines at 2 am. He had actually expected the meeting to happen before Kellen had to speak to his first class at around 9:30-10 am. After lunch was unacceptable but his standards.

It was only made worse by the absolute shit that was coming out of their mouths. They were only 2 minutes into the meeting and Kellen felt like he was going to vibrate out of his skin, he was so angry.

"Are you fucking kidding me?" Kellen couldn’t stop the words from tumbling out of his mouth. They had just finished speaking, their smug, almost proud looks on their faces making Kellen’s hands clench. His whole body felt like it was on fire. Rage boiled his blood, every part of him on alert. Even Sakura’s face was twisted with anger, her normally happy and calm expression full of fury. Kellen didn’t need to look at Rhys to know he was pissed.

"What is wrong with you?" It was Hill. She was barely contained. Thank god Sergei wasn’t here, or he might have just killed the idiots who were speaking with his fucking mind. Thank god his Mom wasn’t here. Holy shit.

The big wigs, the civilians who had no idea what being on the front lines was like were telling a call full of people who had risked their lives that...they weren’t going to do it.

They weren’t going to send a rescue party.

And that there would be severe consequences if they did.

Kellen laughed. It was a cruel, heartless sound that had a few of them shifting uncomfortably in their chairs.

"You are fucking lucky that we’re not in the same room right now." Kellen said. The fear that they had, the reason why these calls were never in person manifesting in this minute. Kellen had no doubt that half of the reason these meetings were called in like this was for convenience’s sake, and the other half was because they were scared little babies. Well, the fucking should be right now. Kellen had never felt this murderous before.

"I-Is that a threat?" The man who told Kellen asked, his voice shrill. Kellen’s smile fell from his face as he stared at the other man.

"What? Like this is the first time you’ve heard one when you’ve said something so fucking stupid out loud?" Kellen let out a harsh bark of laughter, unaware that his eyes had begun to glow. "When a dog barks, I should call it out, no?"

"Kellen..." Rhys’ voice from beside him made Kellen worry for a second that he was going too far, but Rhys’ hand only reached out, grabbing his hand. "Don’t get too close." He murmured quietly in Kellen’s ear. "I don’t want to see you get arrested." Kellen scoffed.

"A-A dog? How-"

"Watch your damn tone." Kellen growled, and the man shut up. "I can’t believe you shitheads. I once had respect for all of you, but clearly, when times get tough, you idiots tuck tail and run. No wonder Uncle Tom was able to get away with so fucking much." Kellen could see how they all shifted uncomfortably and Kellen snarled. "As soon as something like this happens, you all what? Tuck tail and run? Just because it’s going to be difficult? If we don’t deal with this issue now, we won’t have a fucking city anymore. Do you understand that?" Kellen was shouting, He was emotional.

How the hell was he supposed to remain calm when the injustice of this whole situation was washing over him. Beating at his breast, choking him, wrapping its hands around his throat and squeezing until it hurt to get words out. Kellen wanted to cry out of pure frustration.

"You’re only like this because your sister got sucked into the gate. We’re sorry that happened, but we have already lost too many members. We can’t lose anymore." Kellen felt his eyes widen at their damn boldness.

"Lost? Are you fucking kidding me? Do you know who was lost? The same young girl that you wanted to shove into the gate originally to do a little testy test and see if it would keep her in there or not. And how dare you say that I’m reacting like this just because my sister is in there? I would be reacting like this no matter who the fuck is in that gate." Kellen’s voice was loud, angry. freewёbnoνel.com

"Guide Woods, calm down. We understand that the Saturn Guild has been the most effected by this tragedy, but-"

"No! You shut the fuck up! I can’t believe that this is how you are going to treat us after all that we have given to you. You fucks get to live in luxury, rolling in money while we have to sacrifice our lives over and over. When was the last time that a gate appeared in the city? Hmm? Who the fuck do you have to thank for that? Hmm?" Kellen was sure it was the man at his side. He didn’t even need to look to know it was true.

The guilty looks on these fuckers faces proved his point.

"And on the topic of my fucking family," Kellen started. "How dare you sit there with a straight face and spit at everything my parents have done for this city and this country? How much they have sacrificed, how much blood and sweat and tears they have given you, and yet you want to write off their daughter without a second glance? Are you fucking insane? As far as we know, no one is dead yet. Not a single person. Nothing has been confirmed, and we, the Espers and Guides, made sure that everyone on the front lines who was working with the gate or near the gate had the most recent suit to protect them against poison. The fact that you aren’t taking that into consideration makes me really think that you don’t give a fuck about us as people, and only view us as a resource. An item that you can use and abuse whenever you want."

Silence filled the air as Kellen jerkily ran his hand through his hair. He wanted to scream, but he didn’t. He turned his hard glare to every face, every civilian who was on the screen and saw fear in their eyes.

"We don’t need you. Your damn monsters are off their leashes, and you’re the ones who cut them. Get the fuck out of here. If you aren’t going to be useful as owners, we don’t fucking need you. Go make sure your guards are warned, because mark my words, once we’re done with this gate, you’re fucking next. And the Espers and Guides won’t be the ones laying hands on you." Someone kicked them from the call and Kellen turned away from the fucking screens. He was seeing double he was so mad. He wanted to kick, scream, but Rhys wrapped him up in his arms.

Holding him. Soothing him.

"You did such a good job telling them off." Rhys whispered. "I’m so proud of you."

"What the hell are we going to do? Did Kellen just make us all criminals?" Sakura asked, her voice a little high. Lieutenant Fisher chuckled.

"Uh, maybe temporarily, but he had some stellar points. Pamela, are you-"

"-Peter, make sure that you send out the whole meeting to the media." Pamela interrupted Lieutenant Fisher. "I’m sending over the details I want you to include." Kellen blinked as the voices of the others washed over him.

Sakura let out a relieved sigh.

"Oh thank goodness. I was worried there for a second. The people turning against us wasn’t something I wanted to happen." Sakura said. Hill chuckled.

"Still. Kellen’s really good at impassioned speeches." Hill sounded appreciative. "But we need to get down to business. If we don’t have their support, how are we-"

"We’re all fucking loaded." Kellen interrupted. "At least, all the Captains are. I know you’re damn hoarders, but we’ll need to dip into it to make sure that everyone gets paid." Rhys chuckled.

"I agree. I have more than enough to offer up." Rhys said and Kellen felt the man tighten his arms around Kellen. "They don’t even realise the true consequences of their actions. Not until those who are going to replace them come into power. As Kellen said, our leashes are cut. We aren’t going back." Rhys’ voice rang out, and Kellen turned.

Every face on the screen was somber. Resigned. Some had fire burning in their eyes, like they were hoping for the day this would happen, while others seemed a little scared.

"Uh, just a question, are we in trouble?" It was Peter, a civilian who was in the room. Rhys laughed.

"No Peter. Civilians who work for us are totally fine. Just the assholes who Kellen yelled at are in our bad books." Peter let out a nervous chuckle, as did a few of the others working in the conference room. Kellen could hear the same sound being repeated on some of the other screens.

Kellen hadn’t even considered that there were others listening to him. He had just been so pissed. Kellen turned in Rhys’ arms, keeping the other man wrapped around him for comfort. Strength.

Kellen was glad that everyone was having a nice chat, especially after all of the anger and vitriol that had come out of his mouth, but he needed to get to the core of the issue.

"So, what are we going to do? Who is going to be in charge of the rescue mission?" Kellen asked. "Who are we asking?" Silence filled the room and Kellen took a deep breath. "I’m pretty sure it’s obvious, but I-"

"Kellen, can we have a talk without others watching for a moment?" Rhys interrupted Kellen’s announcement, and Kellen gave the man who was still holding him a strange look over his shoulder.

It wasn’t like Rhys to cut him off. It wasn’t like Rhys to cut him off when it came to issues that Kellen was well versed in. Kellen felt a warning tingle run down his spine. It wasn’t like the warning signs he’d gotten when he’d first met Rhys and was trying to adjust to his S Class level requests and behaviours.

No, this time it was a warning that Kellen wasn’t going to like what Rhys was going to say. He wasn’t going to like it at all.
