"Mom’s not talking?" 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
"Mama!"
"Maaa~ma!"
Yi Luowa wiped her tears as she spoke hoarsely to the kids, "Mama’s here, Mama heard your voices and got so happy she couldn’t speak."
"Not Mama!"
"You’re not mama! Give me back my Mama!"
Yi Luowa’s voice was so hoarse that the two kids couldn’t recognize it. They pointed at the phone and started crying.
Yi Luowa quickly cleared her throat. "Good babies, don’t cry. I’m Mama."
"Stop crying. If you cry, Mama will feel sad," Tong Airui’s voice came through the phone.
Yi Luowa sniffled. "Honey, please calm them down."
Tong Airui tried to soothe the two kids, but the little ones were adamant: the voice on the phone was not their mama!
Tong Airui helplessly suggested, "Wife, let’s switch to a video call?"
"Alright." Yi Luowa hung up and dialed back using a video app.
As soon as the kids saw their mother, they instantly stopped crying.
Looking at the noticeably thinner woman on the screen, Tong Airui’s nose stung with emotion. "How did you get so much thinner?"
Yi Luowa touched her cheek with a smile. "Am I really thinner? Ever since giving birth, I haven’t gotten back to my old weight. Maybe this time I can get back to my peak form."
"What peak form! You’re nothing but skin and bones now!" Tong Airui muttered angrily with heartache.
"Mama!" Ziyan reached out, trying to grab the mother on the phone screen.
Sangyu also stretched out her small hands.
"Sit still! Both of you!" Tong Airui scolded with a stern face. "If you grab Mama, she’ll disappear."
Frightened, the two kids immediately retracted their hands. Tong Airui scooped both of them into his arms, and Yi Luowa was finally able to see all three of them together. Her gaze lingered greedily on their faces.
The kids were doing alright—still adorably chubby.
But Tong Airui looked utterly worn out. With a nasal tone, she asked, "Honey, have you not been resting these days? Your beard’s unshaven, and there are bloodshot lines in your eyes..."
"I just got back from the camp and haven’t had a chance to clean up. They were in such a rush to talk to you."
Yi Luowa slowly raised her hand, gently brushing against the screen where the three faces appeared, and asked with a smile, "Is it them who missed me, or you?"
"We all missed you, but I missed you more than they did!"
"Me! Me!" Sangyu pouted stubbornly against her dad’s chest.
"Me too!" Ziyan raised his little hand and slapped his dad’s big hand.
"If you hit me again, I won’t let Mama talk to you!" Tong Airui lowered his eyes to look at his son.
Ziyan’s little mouth quivered with grievance as he turned to the phone. "Mama, come back!"
"Mama will come back in a few days," Yi Luowa sniffled, gently tapping her son’s puckered lips on the screen. "Making faces isn’t cute. Once I finish my work here, I’ll come back to be with you. Okay?"
"Not okay!" Sangyu furrowed her brows and twisted her little bun hairdo angrily. "Come back and fix my hair!"
Yi Luowa smiled helplessly. "Naughty baby. Grandma styled it so nicely, and you’ve gone and messed it up."
"Come back!" Sangyu demanded stubbornly, wrinkling her nose.
Yi Luowa sighed, her gaze turning to Tong Airui with resignation. "Why don’t you bring them over to me?"
Tong Airui sighed as well. "You’re so busy—how would you have time to take care of them? Let’s talk about it after this busy period is over. Everyone at home misses you. Lately, whenever they get upset, Mom just plays them that speech of yours... Wife, you’ve got a way. You don’t say much, but you manage to stir people’s blood."
Yi Luowa gave him a playful look. "Isn’t it because you’re such a good teacher?"
"Ha... I definitely didn’t teach you that. What I taught you can only be used in bed."
Yi Luowa’s face flushed red instantly, her ears burning. She sneaked a glance at Yuan Hang and the kids. Seeing they weren’t paying attention, she quickly plugged in her earbuds and whispered, "Don’t talk nonsense in front of the kids."
"They can’t understand anyway."
"Honey, what’s the situation in R Country? Are they going to fight or not? If they’re not, let’s find an excuse to start one. If this drags on, I’m afraid my parents will eventually figure it out."
"What kind of excuse?"
"The guy who died at the tower—the majority of his calls were made to R Country. If nothing else, we can make a story out of that."
"If we do, we’ll be accused of bullying... Don’t rush. I think they’ll take action by tomorrow at the latest."
"So certain?"
"Sato Hara’s been driven to anger by Sato Xiao. I’d wager that once Sato Xiao gets control of the military, he’ll move."
Yi Luowa frowned. "Those two are at such odds—would Sato Hara really hand power over to his son?"
"Sato Xiao is more ruthless than Sato Hara. He’ll find a way to get it."
"Then let’s wait and see. Honey... there’s no hope anymore on the West Ocean front, is there?" The moment she asked, her hand holding the phone began trembling uncontrollably.
"As long as no bodies have been found, there’s still a chance." Yi Luowa’s eyes were brimming with tears. Tong Airui wanted to wipe them away but could only wish. Gently touching her thinner face on the screen, he spoke solemnly, "They’ve recovered a number of bodies recently, but none of them were Danton. In a way, that’s good news. Yesterday I saw a news story online about someone who survived nine days in a shark’s stomach... and then they were rescued."
Yi Luowa frowned slightly. "Honey, you don’t need to make up stories to cheer me up. I’m fine. I can handle it. I just... I just can’t explain it to my parents."
"What’s there to explain? He did this to himself. Do you know how much trouble he caused with his escape? When he gets back, if you two don’t beat him, I’ll do it myself. He has to learn a lesson the hard way!"
"When he’s back, we’ll deal with him together!" Yi Luowa’s voice cracked with pain as she spoke. How she longed to give her brother a good scolding, but even such a small wish felt impossible to fulfill.
"Wife, you absolutely need to be careful these days. With Danton missing, you’ve become a target. I’ve already instructed Yuan Hang that the three of them won’t leave your side, but you can’t let your guard down either."
"Don’t worry. I’ll protect myself for the sake of all of you."
"I’m still scared thinking about the close call yesterday. Not every time will be so lucky. I’ve sent Phantom over already. Yuan Hang and his team work in the open—Phantom will operate in the shadows. This setup gives me some peace of mind."
"Don’t send everyone to me. You need people by your side too."
"I’ve got plenty here—you don’t need to worry. I can only focus if I know you’re safe..."
"I want to talk to Mama!" Sangyu interrupted before Tong Airui could finish. She furrowed her eyebrows and looked at her daddy. Wasn’t this supposed to be her and her brother’s turn to chat with Mama? They hadn’t gotten a single word in!
With affection, Tong Airui kissed his daughter’s forehead. "Daddy’s got one more thing to say—just wait a bit longer."
"Hurry and say it!" Sangyu bounced impatiently on her daddy’s lap.
"Pfft~" Yi Luowa burst out laughing. "Look how anxious our daughter is, blurting out such a complicated sentence. Whatever you’ve got to say, just spit it out already."
"Wife, I miss you..."
"I miss Mama too!" Ziyan shouted loudly at the screen.
Tears began welling in Yi Luowa’s eyes. She sniffled and choked out, "I miss you all too, but I can’t come home yet. Once I finish the work here, I’ll come back to be with you, and then our family will never be apart again."
"I want Mama to hold me!" Sangyu cried as she opened her little arms.
"I miss Mama... Waaah—" Ziyan burst into tears as well.
Yi Luowa couldn’t hold back anymore and began crying herself. Quickly, Kou’er handed her a tissue. "Stop crying. If you start, the kids will cry even more."
Sniffling, Yi Luowa wiped her tears away. When she looked at the phone again, Tong Airui had turned his face away. She couldn’t see his expression, but she could feel that he, too, was crying—the camera image on his side wouldn’t stop shaking.
"No more crying! Everyone, no more crying," Yi Luowa croaked, trying to comfort the three of them.
The image on the screen took a while to steady. Tong Airui adjusted the camera to focus back on the two tear-streaked kids. "I only came back today to check on them. In a little while, I have to return to Shen Ying. Take another look at them, and then we’ll end the call."
"No! I want to keep looking at Mama!"
"Mama!"
Sangyu and Ziyan pressed their little faces against the phone, their cheeks squishing together comically. Seeing their distorted little faces, Yi Luowa raised the phone and kissed the screen repeatedly. "Mama kissed you both! My two good babies are the best and most obedient. No more crying, okay? Mama will come back as soon as she can."
"Mama and Daddy still have work to do. Let’s call it a day, alright?" Tong Airui tried to reason with the kids.
"Not alright!" Sangyu shook her head.
"Not alright!" Ziyan mimicked.
"You can’t be so stubborn. Otherwise, we won’t let you talk to Mama next time."
"Sangyu, Ziyan, Grandma made some desserts. Do you want some? I put strawberries in them too." Tong Yao’s voice came through from the background.
Yi Luowa quickly wiped her tears.
Tong Airui seized the kids’ moment of hesitation to say, "Wife, hanging up now."
Before Yi Luowa could respond, Tong Airui had already ended the call.
Yi Luowa looked pitifully at Kou’er, who was sitting next to her. "He didn’t even let me get a word in before he hung up!"
