Beyond the Bloodline-Chapter 190: Dissonant Cataclysm
Laird felt Jamie remaining here was very suspicious. He felt that the Hybrid had some sort of hidden card that made him confident.
’The werewolf is also suspicious. Sure, the wolfsbane is affecting her and I can see the black blood spilling from her wound...but she’s still conscious? The wolfsbane we gave them should be able to knock out a Half-Deity in seconds!’
With all those thoughts, Laird came to a conclusion:
"Dar, I’d use my Bounded Field."
"?! That thing doesn’t differentiate between allies and enemies! You want to fight him alone?"
"I know. But it’s the best way to crush him in one fell swoop.
That werewolf girl is suspicious, so you neutralize her and be on standby just in case anything goes wrong."
Having said this, Laird roused his spatial power and released a burst of energy that neutralised Jamie’s spatial pressure on the traitor mercs and guards.
Responding in kind, Jamie drew his featureless blade and sliced his palm, drawing blood from it. The blood floated like it had a mind of its own and swirled around Jamie’s sword.
Designate Field Target.
Laird held up two fingers and spoke in his true voice, causing the ambient spatial energy to wrap around Jamie’s body. It phased through his multilayer barrier and reached his real body underneath, causing the man to frown.
’Tsk...In the end, he still has a Complete Authority...I can’t repel everything.’
Right after Jamie thought this, Laird exerted control over the spatial energy that he had previously released and used it to delineate the boundary walls of his bounded field.
He cut out a separate portion of space and shifted it from the physical dimension to create an alternate space. The Boundary walls rapidly expanded in the form of a dome-shaped burst of spatial power that quickly reached Jamie’s position.
[You wouldn’t get me that easily! Child of Space: Spatial Destruction!]
Jamie’s unique skill rune flashed on his soul and he released a mix of both spatial and destruction law energies, sending a wave that clashed with the rapidly expanding dome of Laird’s Bounded Field.
The collision resulted in a tremendous burst of power that blew everyone away. Both traitor and ally guards and mercenaries quickly distanced themselves to avoid getting caught in the violently lashing crimson destructive energy.
Laird frowned lightly, feeling his pride take a hit that a Transcendent managed to stall his Bounded Field’s activation, even if only by a few seconds.
Tsk...Authority of Space.
He activated his authority with a click of his tongue, using its power to enhance his Bounded Field. In a second, Jamie’s spatial destruction was broken as the Bounded Field Dome expanded past him.
Designated as the ’Target,’ powerful spatial energy surged and wrapped around Jamie, forcefully warping him into the alternate space.
In the last moment before he was sent in, Jamie glanced at Miranda for a second, and then his vision went black.
When light entered Jamie’s eyes, he was inside a space that looked just like the same area he was outside, however, the environment was fragmented and unstable.
The sky and ground seem to twist and bend, with visible cracks and distortions running through the air. All the objects within the field appeared stretched or compressed, as if viewed through a broken lens.
Bounded Field: Realm of Spatial Dissonance.
Laird’s voice echoed from above, and Jamie looked up to see the Drifter floating in the air, his eyes glowing as he gazed down. Laird wasted no words, no time. He silently slammed his palms together, activating his Bounded Field’s ability.
Dissonant Cataclysm (Long Burst)
His spatial power surged uncontrollably and the environment trembled, increasing the intensity of the spatial distortions that already existed.
Without hesitation, Jamie coated his body in his spatial law energy as he felt the signs of the impending catastrophe, but that wasn’t enough.
***BOOOM!!! BOOOOMMM!!! BOOOOOMM!!!!
Multiple implosions erupted simultaneously across the entire Bounded Field, creating intense gravitational pulls that drew in everything within a large radius.
The implosions were erratic, forming singularities that compressed and crushed all matter within their vicinity.
Immediately following each implosion, the compressed space exploded violently, releasing tremendous amounts of energy with shockwaves that tore throughout the Bounded Field, creating widespread spatial fissures and rifts that severed and displaced any target in their path.
And right now, the only ’target in their path, was Jamie.
The violent spatial distortions consumed Jamie’s form in an instant. The ability of the Bounded Field brutally crushed and destroyed his limbs, severing some and mangling others beyond recognition. His body was battered from all sides, the relentless onslaught of spatial energy breaking bones, spilling blood, tearing flesh, and twisting his form into a grotesque, unrecognizable state.
This brutal assault continued for several minutes before gradually subsiding. The field slowly stabilized, and the spatial ruptures began to mend.
However, the aftermath left the area scarred and fragmented, with lingering spatial anomalies that shimmered and crackled in the air.
As the distortions cleared, Jamie’s limbless, mangled body was revealed. His torso was torn and bloodied, with his limbs either completely severed or hanging by threads of flesh.
His once-strong form was now a mass of broken bones, shredded muscles, and torn skin, lying in a pool of his own blood.
The sheer brutality of Laird’s Bounded Field had left Jamie barely recognizable.
Laird descended to the ground, his feet touching down lightly. He surveyed the mangled form of Jamie, speaking aloud to himself.
"I held back just enough not to kill him, but I guess I’ll have to do that and retrieve his soul. If his handlers come, I’d give them that."
As he reached out toward Jamie’s body, a sudden, sharp pain exploded in his chest. A sword had pierced through from behind, shocking him still.
"...huh?"
He looked down to see the blade protruding from his chest, and as his brain fully processed the situation, Jamie’s body began twitching.
’Oy, I used enough power to carve out a third of the moon!! No fuckin-!’
Laird hadn’t even completed his curse when Jamie’s body began to regenerate. Muscles knitted back together, bones reformed, and skin closed up, restoring his form to its previous state. Laird leapt back just in time to avoid the expanding sphere of spatial destruction Jamie released.
Grabbing the sword still lodged in his chest, Laird pulled it out, about to use magic to heal the wound when the sword in his hand exploded, sending shards and energy tearing into him. He reeled from the pain, blood oozing from new gashes.
His senses suddenly screamed danger, and he jumped away, narrowly avoiding a spatial slash that cut through the space he had occupied a second ago.
[Basic Attack Sequence #1: Slash.]
Jamie’s voice echoed, and Laird looked up to see Jamie casually tossing on another shirt, replacing the one that had been destroyed earlier.
[Basic Attack Sequence #2: Cut.]
WHAT SORT OF MUTANT VAMPIRE ARE YOU?!
Laird bellowed in rage, raising his hands coated in spatial power. He caught the two criss-crossing slashes of spatial energy and shattered them before charging at Jamie.
In response, Jamie grinned and formed finger guns with both hands, calling out playfully.
[Bang! Bang!]
Jamie’s ’Triad Gun’ skill activated, releasing spatial power from his left hand and destruction energy from his right, each forming bullets that left shimmering trails as they travelled through the air.
?!
Laird’s eyes widened as he tried to dodge the incoming bullets. He deflected one with a swipe of spatial power, but the other grazed his side, leaving a burning trail of pain.
’Damn it! What the hell is this bullshit?!’
The drifter was seething with rage.
He had used his ’Dissonant Cataclysm’ without hesitation because he was confident he could deal with Jamie in one strike, but the Hybrid had survived.
One would ask why he didn’t just do it again, and Laird wasn’t dumb enough not to think of that.
But the fact that he didn’t, meant he couldn’t.
Laird’s Spatial Dissonance had two forms. Dissonant Surge (Short Burst), and Dissonant Cataclysm (Long Burst).
It went without saying that the Dissonant Surge was a shorter and weaker variation of what he had used on Jamie. It had a cooldown period of approximately 30 seconds, allowing for repeated use in quick succession during combat.
However, it lacked the power to destroy Jamie’s multilayer spatial barriers AND severely wound him, so Laird had opted to use Dissonant Cataclysm.
Dissonant Cataclysm was strong enough that any other Level 1000 would be one and a half feet in the grave after taking the hit Jamie just did.
The problem here was that it had a long cooldown period. Approximately 10 minutes.
During this time, Laird could not use either Dissonant Cataclysm or Dissonant Surge, as the energy required to stabilize the bounded field was too great!
Still, Laird was a Half-Deity. He had many more means of attack.
Waving his hand, Laird unleashed a barrage of spatial energy cannonballs backed by his Authority, and though Jamie dodged most, one cannonball caught him square in the forehead, snapping his neck backwards 180 degrees!
