Chapter 109: Vs the Sovereign Merman

Jamie’s eyes narrowed as he tore open the space beside him and pulled out his weapon of Spatial Destruction.

"To think you were descended from Angels and Demons...your ancestors must have really fooled around."

A halo of dark light appeared behind the head of the Merman, but he remained silent as he glared at Jamie while rousing his energy.

Silence pervaded the area for a moment, and in the next, Jamie vanished.

’Where did he...behind?!’

The man tried to turn around but he wasn’t fast enough to do so before Jamie released a slash of spatial energy that collided with the floating Halo on his back.

The force knocked him forward a bit, but he quickly regained his bearings and coated his arms in the same dark light as the halo, crossing them in front of his chest to block Jamie’s follow-up sword slash.

**BOOM—!

Shockwaves rippled outward from the point of clash as the Merman was pushed back by the force behind Jamie’s sword, even so, he gritted his teeth and channelled more power into his arms, releasing a burst of energy to repel Jamie and give himself some distance.

Immediately he gained the distance he was after; he drew his hands through the air, using his energy to craft a giant cross of dark light in front of himself.

’Concentric Cross: Fire!’

Multiple concentric circles radiated outward from the cross, charging up energy before releasing it as an array of circular beams of dark light.

Jamie swung his sword at breakneck speed, cutting through the beams with relative ease, before teleporting behind the man and releasing a single slash towards his back.

"I wouldn’t fall for the same trick twice!"

The Merman quickly turned around and waved his hand, firing a massive beam of dark light that pierced right into Jamie’s chest and exploded.

He backed away quickly and swung his hands down in a cross, releasing an ’X’ shaped slash of light that cut through the explosion from his previous attack.

Pulling back his hands, he generated a gigantic spear of dark light and threw it forward, sending the spear hurtling towards Jamie at supersonic speed.

’It’s not enough!’

The man roused his energy, keeping his gaze trained on the cloud of smoke; an action that allowed him to spot the blue streak of light that zipped out of it and towards him.

’As I thought...he’s unharmed!’

He condensed dark light into his hands and released it as formulated light blasts, creating gigantic shark-shaped constructs with razor-sharp teeth.

The creatures roared and chomped down on Jamie with their jaws, but the Hybrid split them in two with spatial slices, continuing his charge towards the Merman.

Due to this, the merman was forced to stop the other technique he was preparing to release a barrage of simple light blasts from his hands.

Despite his efforts, Jamie manoeuvred through, dodging and countering the Merman’s subsequent barrage of light blasts.

’Concentric Cross Barrage!’

Multiple crosses of dark light manifested all around him and Jamie, launching circular beams that threatened to slice Jamie to pieces, but the Hybrid snapped his fingers and generated the exact same number of wormholes to swallow the light beams.

"Damn it!"

The Merman cursed as he created and launched massive spheres of light, but Jamie either cut through them with his sword or moved away fast enough to dodge them.

Just when Jamie got close enough to be considered in Melee range, the Merman expanded his energy and released indiscriminate beams of light in all directions, managing to score some hits on the Hybrid who reacted half a second late.

Even so, it did not matter much as even the wound caused by the beam that Hit Jamie straight in the forehead and burned his skin a bit, healed up in the second that followed.

All the beams that hit other parts of his body were easily blocked by the defensive power of his clothes, and the Merman’s frustration only seemed to increase.

"Impale!"

Spears of light appeared around Jamie and pierced toward his head, but the wormholes that opened up around him absorbed the spears and returned them to their sender.

The Merman knew just how powerful his attacks were, so he didn’t dare to get hit by them, swimming out of the way as fast as he could while still keeping an eye on Jamie.

’I can’t lose sight of him even for half a second!’

As he thought that, he charged up energy in his mouth and discharged a massive light blast, similar to a dragon’s breath from his mouth, however it was countered by Jamie’s simple energy blast of azure flames.

’Light Missiles! Scattershot!’

The man shaped his energy into an array of light torpedoes, launching them towards Jamie while releasing light blasts that slit into multiple fragments alongside them.

Jamie snapped his fingers, generating lattice-shaped barriers of spatial energy that rapidly moved around to counter each one of the scattershot blasts at the point of impact, while he dashed towards the missiles. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

He let go of the Galaxy Sword and stretched out his hands, coating them in spatial energy as he grabbed onto the first of the missiles, before teleporting right in front of the Merman.

"?!"

The Merman had guessed Jamie would teleport to a blind spot and was in the middle of turning, hence, he was surprised when Jamie suddenly appeared right in front of him.

’Maximum Defence!’

**KAAABOOOMM!!!!!

Jamie thrust the missile like a spear, right into his face, triggering an explosion that shook the entire ERE zone, while sending out shockwaves that shook the tectonic plates of Bliteon above them.

’Omnidirectional Light Waves.’

The Merman released waves of light to blow Jamie away, however, it did zero damage to the Hybrid.

Jamie quickly regained his bearings mid-air and grabbed his sword, keeping his gaze onto the explosion that consumed over a quarter of the ERE zone.

The smoke gradually cleared up, revealing the injured appearance of the Merman whose left wing had been bloodied and his right horn had cracked.

He charged up an energy blast and released it towards Jamie, but it was swatted away with a casual flick of his hands.

’As I thought, his horns and wings did possess energy amplification capabilities. Kind of like a Magic Staff or catalyst, and destroying them reduced the quality of his attacks.

Also, he has not used the energy of another law except from darkness and light...which means he’s most likely limited to those two in this form.’

Jamie analysed the Merman as he saw a wave of dark light wash over his broken wing and begin reconstructing the tissues and feathers that made it up.

’Of course, he can use his dark light to heal as well.’

The Hybrid only smirked lightly and twirled around the Galaxy sword, before teleporting and reappearing behind the wounded Merman.

Azure blue flames enveloped his sword as he swung it down, aiming for the Merman’s wounded left wing, but his attack was blocked by a multi-layered barrier of dark light.

Jamie quickly removed his left hand from his sword handle, coating it in crackling blue lightning and punching the head of the Merman with enough force to send him crashing down to the ocean floor.

He then returned his hand to his sword and swung it down, releasing a dozen spatial slashes in a single breath, but the Merman flew out of the way to avoid them.

Still attempting to at least heal his wing, the Merman condensed dark light in between his palms and turned to fire it at Jamie, however, the Hybrid teleported right beside him and swung the Galaxy Sword with the intent of slicing off the Merman’s arms.

Luckily for the Merman, he twisted his wrist at the last moment and fired the beam of dark light at Jamie’s sword, saving himself from an unceremonious amputation.
