Chapter 103: Why Are You So Nervous?

Evelyn’s chest kept rising and falling in heavy breathing, waiting for Luca whose voice she was no longer hearing.

The sudden cold touch she felt on her arm, startled her, but the man Luca was quick to slap a palm over her mouth, keeping her quiet.

"Shhhh," he said to her, leaning in to whisper, "Be careful. Don’t make any noise. This is your only chance of getting out of here. If you and I are caught, forget you, I am freaking dead, alright?"

She rapidly nodded at him.

Luca grabbed her hand, pulled her aside a little bit, and proceeded to push the wall she’d hidden against.

Her pupils dilated.

He explained, "It exists for an easy quick escape if anything were to go wrong. Valerio is not a simple man. He’s involved in a lot of things I wouldn’t speak about, hence why he has far too many houses."

He grabbed her hand and walked in, slowly closing the wall.

"What if there are guards in here?" she asked.

He shook his head. "No. This place is solely for the boss and I only know of him because I’m allowed to walk every corridor of this building. His men aren’t really aware of this place."

The walk down the stairs was far too narrow. And it echoed when they spoke which made her wonder how far they were going.

"Is this underground?" She asked, whispering.

Luca nodded.

"It is. Every house he owns has an underground which makes it easy for him to escape bad situations."

They arrived at the first door, and he stuffed his hand into his pocket, picking out a bunch of keys.

He momentarily let go of her, proceeding to unlock that door.

Then he began moving.

Evelyn followed behind him, stopping as they reached another door which he unlocked.

"Where does this lead to?" She moved closer, inquiring.

"Up to the backyard of this mansion. The guards are only posted outside. So, when we climb out, I’ll help you over the fence."

A new set of stairs came into view, this time bringing them all the way up to a much smaller door.

Luca stepped aside, allowing her to slip out first. He followed behind her, and then grabbed her, pulling her towards the fence.

He hunched over for her.

She swallowed. "Y-you’re letting me climb your back?"

"Yes. Why?"

"I might hurt your spine," she said.

The man paused and then scrutinized her from head to toe. He cocked a brow at her. "Don’t you think you’re a bit too thin to say that?"

"You..." Her forehead scrunched up. "I was being considerate." She moved closer, grabbed him, and forced herself up till she could stand on his back.

Luca grunted, holding himself still and making sure she didn’t fall. "When you jump over, keep running, and do not look back. Run until you can find someone to help you with their phone. Then call anyone you know, okay?"

Evelyn nodded. She grabbed the fence but didn’t jump over immediately. Instead, she looked down at him, saying, "Thank you, Luca. Thank you so much."

"Nothing to worry about," he said to her.

"What about the CCTV cameras? How will you deal with it?"

She sounded heavily concerned, delaying her escape.

Luca exhaled. "Just go, girl. Forget about it. I’ll handle it."

"Will you be okay? You wouldn’t get hurt, would you?"

"No, I won’t. I have it all under control, so go. Now! We don’t have much time."

She finally agreed, yanked herself over the wall, and fell to her feet, which the impact sent a sizzling pain up her legs.

"Ouch!" She hissed, but forced herself up. "Luca."

There was no response.

"Luca, do you know where this is?"

Still nothing.

The man seemed to have left.

Glancing from her left to her right, she ran off, running as quickly as she could on her bare feet, uncaring that the stones beneath were digging into and causing so much pain she could feel them travelling up her veins.

But that was the least of her problems. All that mattered was to get away as far as she could, so that even if Valerio were to start looking for her, he wouldn’t be able to get to her.

...

Luca stayed in the kitchen, cooking as he normally would, behaving as casually as he always did as if nothing had happened.

He’d been lucky enough that when he came back up, he hadn’t ended up bumping into a single guard and had made it in one piece.

Now all he had to do was find the time to clear out the CCTV camera. Valerio wasn’t coming back until the next day. At least he’d said so.

So maybe—

The sound of heavy footsteps. One he’d been hearing for so many years of his life of working for this man.

Valerio.

The man was back.

But how come?

He’d said he wouldn’t be back until the next morning. What changed? What happened?

It hadn’t even been four hours since he left.

Luca went still where he stood, swallowing.

His only saving grace would be if this man didn’t check the CCTV camera. Because more than anyone, he knew he was heading over to Evelyn’s room to check on her.

He won’t see her there. He will ask around and then he will check the CCTV footage.

"Fuck, fuck, fuck!"

His grip on the knife he held tightened.

"Lucas." Valerio’s voice sounded as he approached the kitchen.

Luca gulped down the anxiety he was feeling.

It took nothing for this man to keep him. A bullet to the head would be enough and as much as he’d really wanted to help Evelyn, dying like this, in this place...it was—

"Lucas."

He slowly turned, a soft smile on his face. "Yes, boss?"

"Evelyn, did you feed her?"

"Not yet sir. I’m still cooking."

"And for how long are you going to spend?"

"Just a few more minutes, sir."

"Good." Valerio turned to leave, but then he paused and glanced at him. "Why are you so nervous and sweaty?"

"Huh?"
