Betrayed by Fiance, Embraced by Hidden Tycoon-Chapter 69: My Last Possession
Chapter 69: My Last Possession
Sitting next to Grandma, Abigail handed over the box. Her eyes beamed with curiosity as she wondered about its contents.
"Oh, Abby..." Sophie Lewis began to speak, a bittersweet smile forming on her lips. Her eyes filled with sadness as she looked at her only granddaughter, deepening Abigail’s confusion.
"Granny, don’t confuse me. Why do you look sad all of a sudden?" Abigail asked.
"Abby, I know you’ve run out of the money your mother left for you. Yet, you’ve never asked me for a penny all this time. I feel sorry for you, my dear..."
Abigail lowered her gaze, unable to meet her grandmother’s sorrowful eyes.
What her grandmother said was true; she had never been open with her. She always claimed she covered only half of the nursing home expenses, relying on the funds left by her mother. But the truth was, the money had run out, and not a single penny remained.
"Don’t try to avoid telling me the truth, Abby. Even though I’m not young anymore, I can still count," Sophie said, her gentle eyes fixed on Abigail. "The money you received from selling the house was used to pay for your mother’s medical expenses and her funeral, right?"
Sophie felt heartbroken discussing this matter, but she couldn’t ignore it any longer, especially now that Abigail was struggling with her own issues. She needed plenty of money to start fresh and find a place to live.
"Granny, why are you bringing up that issue again?" Abigail looked up, trying hard not to cry.
"Alright, I won’t talk about it anymore. But I need you to take this." Sophie placed a black velvet box in Abigail’s hands.
Abigail glanced down at the box before looking back at her grandmother.
"Granny, what is this?"
"This is my last possession. You can sell it if you need money. Although the amount you get won’t buy you a house in the capital, it could cover everything you need or perhaps even buy a small home here in town."
Abigail was stunned by her grandmother’s words. She had never expected her grandmother to still own anything valuable after they had sold all the assets to cover her medical treatment.
"Granny, if this is your most valuable belonging, how can you give it to me?" Abigail protested, returning the box. But Grandma pushed it back to her.
"Abby, please accept this. If I pass away, this box will mean nothing to me. In the end, it will be yours. Take it now and use it if you need money."
Sophie tried to convince Abigail to accept her final gift, feeling she was only a burden to her granddaughter.
Hearing her grandmother’s heartfelt words, Abigail felt she had no choice but to accept the box.
"Alright. I’ll keep it for you, Granny. But I will never sell this, and this thing will not be my last resort. I know I can survive with my own effort, Granny."
How could she sell her grandmother’s last possession? It was better to work hard and save money to buy a house.
"Do whatever you think is best. But if you still need money next year, consider selling it. You could use the money to buy a small property for us to live in together..." Sophie earnestly expressed her thoughts.
Abigail smiled faintly as she opened the box, curious about her grandmother’s jewelry, which could be worth so much. Although property in this town was cheaper than in the capital, they still needed around $100,000 to buy a modest home with two bedrooms.
She frowned as she looked at the white gold necklace inside the box, which featured a beautiful round pendant that resembled blue glass.
"Granny, are you sure we can buy a new house with this white gold necklace?" Abigail asked. "What kind of stone is this pendant?"
Sophie laughed at Abigail’s cluelessness.
"Oh dear, that’s a blue diamond. I don’t know its exact value now, but in the past, when your mother sold a pair of earrings with small diamonds, it could’ve bought the house we lived in."
Abigail was shocked to hear that, feeling her hand tremble as she held the box.
"Gr-Granny, are you sure this is a blue diamond?" Abigail still doubted it. She raised her hand to touch the pendant, hesitating to make contact.
She couldn’t tell if the pendant was indeed a genuine diamond. Still, from what she’d read online, blue diamonds had become incredibly valuable in recent years.
"Yes, it is!" Sophie replied, amused by Abigail’s doubts. "Abby, you can take the pendant to a jeweler to verify its authenticity. But be careful; this blue diamond is real. If bad people learn you have it, you could be in serious trouble."
Abigail shivered at the thought of losing the jewelry.
"Granny, sorry to ask, but where did you get this jewelry?" She had never heard anything about her grandfather’s identity. If her grandmother had this, it must have come from him.
"That’s the last possession from your late grandpa," Sophie’s voice trailed off. She turned her gaze to the backyard, tears forming in her eyes.
’Late husband?’ Abigail was stunned to hear about her grandfather for the first time. ’So he’s already gone...’
A troubling thought struck Abigail as she wondered who had paid for her grandmother’s medical expenses. ’If Grandpa has already passed away, who pays for it? Is it Grandpa’s family?’
"Granny, can you tell me about my grandpa?" Abigail asked carefully, not wanting to upset her grandmother further.
"That man died long before your mother was born."
"So Grandpa never knew of my mother’s existence?" Abigail asked, feeling lost.
"Yes. I—" Sophie looked at Abigail, tears glistening in her eyes. "I’m sorry, Abby. But I still can’t talk about him. Please wait until I’m a little stronger so I can be honest with you..."
Abigail decided not to press her grandmother any further. Instead, she gently held her hand, patting it softly.
They remained silent for a while until Rosa came in and informed Sophie that she needed to have lunch and rest.
Abigail quickly said goodbye to her grandmother, promising she would return soon.
