Chapter 52: Mother’s conditions to be an explorer

" And why are you just sitting there and not joining me to reject this idea?" His mother turned to his father and asked.

In response, his father just lowered his head and mumbled softly.

"He knows." He raised his hand to look at his wife after saying that, his eyes were red, and he had a guilty expression.

Alex’s mother froze, realising what her husband meant. Alex had found out about the debt that they were owing.

She fell into silence for a while before speaking again.

"Still, I don’t agree with you becoming an explorer. You only just started using spells, facing such dangerous situations will be too much. Moreover, we have enough time to pay back, you don’t have to worry about it; focus on the academy and nothing else."

Her body was trembling as she said this, and tears slowly ran down her face.

"We don’t have time," Alex’s father voiced out from the side. His wife looked at him with a confused face, and he proceeded to tell her about the fat man and the deadline, which was next week.

He didn’t tell her that the fat man had requested their daughter; there wasn’t a need to mention it.

A shocked look appeared on Alex’s mother’s face after she learned of this, her mouth opened as she tried to say something, but couldn’t find her words.

After some seconds of stuttering, she finally found the words she was looking for.

"T-then we’ll find a solution, not you becoming an explorer. We’ll think of a solution." She said in one breath.

"Mom!" Alex called out in a loud voice, startling his parents. Both of them turned to look at him.

After getting their attention, he first took a deep breath before saying.

"I know it’s dangerous, but I can’t just sit still and do nothing. I know you and Dad have been doing your best, but that amount of money is definitely not something that you can make before the end of next week, even if you work yourselves to death.

Both of you have cared for me and Emily without complaining; I’m not a kid anymore; let me help. I’m bound to become an explorer as a mage anyway; becoming one sooner will allow me to gain experience early and avoid future dangers. Besides, I’m not as weak as you think. The space element is stronger than most elements; I can manage." Alex stated with a determined expression while staring at his parents.

He saw their expressions shifting and knew that his words had affected them, so he waited for their response.

"I...I can’t, I don’t want to." His mother muttered to herself absentmindedly as she fell on her seat and held her head.

His father lowered his head again and fell into silence.

Seeing that both of them were not in any mood to speak, Alex decided to leave them alone for the time being and went to his room.

"Goodnight, let’s continue tomorrow," Alex called out as he ascended the stairs. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

After Alex left, his father lifted his head and looked at the quiet stairs. His wife was still mumbling to herself beside him, and his son’s words kept ringing in his ears.

"I’m a failure." He said with a helpless sigh.

.....

Alex closed the door after entering his room, a sigh escaped his lips.

He already made up his mind to register as an explorer the next day, regardless of his parents’ decision, but he still looked forward to what decision they would make.

Taking another deep breath, he moved the matter to the back of his mind as he approached the books in the corner.

Just like that, Alex read one book after another through the night and slowly increased his exp points.

Morning came swiftly, it was a new day.

Alex closed the book he had just finished reading and stretched his body, even though he didn’t feel tired, he glanced at his system profile while at it.

......

He had gotten only 65 exp after reading through the night, most of it was from the books he had read while he had gotten some exp from completing the weekly mission.

"Hunting magic beasts is indeed the best." Alex sighed.

He proceeded to get ready for the academy. Some minutes later, Alex was already in his academy uniform, his old cloak hanging down from his shoulders.

"Should I get a new uniform?" Alex thought to himself, his uniform was very old and really needed to be changed.

His parents probably didn’t try to get a new one because they couldn’t afford the cost.

"Never mind, I’ll be leaving the academy this year anyway."

Arriving downstairs, Alex saw his mother and Emily settling the table for breakfast; his father was not present, he guessed that the man had already left for work.

"Good morning, Mom." Alex greeted as he approached the dining room, and he paid attention to his mother’s expression to see if he would see anything.

"Morning, baby. Did you sleep well?" His mother replied with a sweet smile, which stunned Alex.

She was behaving so normally that it felt strange. Wasn’t she angry about yesterday?

Since his mother didn’t mention it, Alex naturally wouldn’t bring it up. The three of them had breakfast together as usual before Alex and Emily were ready to leave.

Both of them waved goodbyes before stepping out of the door, but Alex was suddenly called back in by his mother.

"Wait here," Alex said to Emily, who was standing right outside the door. Emily naturally obeyed and waited outside while Alex entered the house.

He found his mother standing in the living room with both hands on her hips and a serious expression on her face.

"Your father and I have thought about it. Fine, we’ll let you become an explorer, but only on a few conditions." She stated.

Alex was pleasantly surprised by her words, and a smile formed on his face; he proceeded to ask what the condition was.

’It must be something like don’t go too far when exploring and run when I encounter danger,’ he thought to himself.

"You must never go exploring outside by yourself and must have an experienced mage with you, You’ll join an explorer group of my choice too. It belongs to an old friend who was lucky enough to become a mage, I can only trust her to look after you." His mother declared firmly, her tone didn’t give Alex any chance to refuse.

Alex "..."

Although it was different from what he had in mind, it was still acceptable.

"Alright, I’ll follow mom’s arrangements." He said, and his mother immediately beamed with a smile.

"Good, now get going so you don’t arrive late to the academy."

Alex nodded before stepping out of the house.

"What happened?" Emily asked, her round eyes staring up at Alex’s face.

"It’s nothing, let’s go." Alex looked down at her and smiled softly.

...

The day went by quickly at the academy. Class was conducted as usual, but the students barely paid attention to their teachers as they talked about the ongoing competition.

The most debated topic was obviously Alex’s shocking performance from the previous day. As for what had happened between Alex and the three students who had followed him yesterday, no one seemed to have found out.

Alex had expected this. The three students must have been frightened and didn’t dare to speak of the matter for fear of incurring Alex’s wrath, or they didn’t dare to speak about it because they were too embarrassed to let others know.

What would happen to them if they said Alex had toyed with the three of them? No one might even believe them!

Time for classes went by quickly, and it was soon time for the second round of the competition. Since half of the students who had registered for the competition had been eliminated, the fights today would not take as much time as the previous day.

Soon, the field was packed with students. The vice dean was also present, but she didn’t give any speech today and just sat in her spot to watch.

Two teachers went up to the ring just like yesterday and began to call students.

"Hey, do you think Alex will win today as well?" A student suddenly asked. Dozens of eyes suddenly zoomed in on Alex, but he didn’t react and just looked at the ring.

"I’ll swallow my textbook if he wins today."

"Heh, I’ll be damned if he wins another match. He was just lucky yesterday and caught his opponent by surprise, many people still didn’t know that he’s now an Adept mage."

"True true, I hope I end up being his opponent. I’ll be able to advance to the next stage with ease."

"Even if you don’t end up going against him, he will definitely lose today. All the students who won their matches yesterday are all top students, and none of them are weak!"

"Hehe, let’s just watch. I’m looking forward to seeing how he will escape today."

The students chatted amongst themselves in loud voices, Alex could obviously hear everything but didn’t say anything.

He would wait for his turn and give them another surprise.

"Someone should get ready to swallow their textbook soon." Alex grinned secretly
