Chapter 51: I want to be an explorer

"Hehehe, of course, there’s another way out. If you can’t pay me back my money next week and don’t want to give away your house, then you can give me that little girl of yours.

She looks very good and will definitely grow into a beauty."

The fat man said while licking his plump lips and rubbing his palm together, his eyes flashed with a lascivious glint.

Alex "..."

This bastard dared to have thoughts about his sister? Alex’s face turned cold, his killing intent almost forming a dark cloud around him.

His eyes looked at the fat man as if the other part was already dead.

"I’ll get your money by next week, stay away from my family!"

Alex calmed down a little when he heard his father’s cold voice, at least he didn’t let such behaviour toward his family slide.

The fat man looked at Alex’s father with a surprised face, he didn’t expect the man to talk back.

"Hmph, poor and still stubborn. Better get my money ready, else don’t blame me for being ruthless!" The fat man snorted before walking away with heavy steps, obviously in a bad mood.

Alex followed the other party with his eyes when he suddenly caught sight of a figure standing at a distance and watching the fat man as well.

Alex raised an eyebrow in surprise, the other party was a mage at the Expert mage rank.

He was as strong as Alex! Rank-wise, of course.

’What is an Expert mage doing in a place like this?’ Alex thought to himself, the presence of the other party made him delay his plan for the fat man.

He kept watching as the fat man approached the man in the distance; they were now out of his father’s line of sight.

Alex saw the fat man stop in front of the mage and began to speak with a humble posture; he was unable to hear anything because of the distance between them and didn’t sneak close to avoid getting discovered.

Alex continued to watch. After seconds of speaking, the mage opened his mouth and uttered a single word. The fat man immediately nodded like a chick pecking rice before running away. The mage turned to look at Alex’s house once more before walking away.

’Is he the one who made the fat man request for Emily? What are they after?’ Alex thought as anger surged in his heart. No matter what their intentions were, he would not forgive them for trying to take Emily in exchange for a loan.

After the mage left, and came out and walked toward their house.

His father was still standing outside with his head lowered, probably lost in thought.

The sounds of Alex’s approaching footsteps woke him up, and he raised his head. Their eyes met, and both sides fell into silence for a while before his father broke the silence.

"You didn’t happen to hear all of that, right?" He asked with a depressed smile, his eyes were slightly red and blurry, but he held everything in and still spoke clearly.

Alex nodded without saying anything, the pressure in his chest increasing, but he didn’t show it on his face.

Their parents had been keeping so much away from them just so that they would not be affected and could live without any worries.

’I guess all parents are like that.’ Alex sighed inwardly.

After learning that Alex had overheard his conversation with the fat man, Alex’s father let out a helpless sigh and said.

"You don’t have to worry about it, I’ll handle everything. Come in, dinner should be ready by now."

Both father and son went into the house, silence returned to the front of the house.

Later that evening, during dinner, Alex’s father didn’t mention what had happened outside their house. Alex would glance at him from time to time, The man had a small smile on his face as he watched his family share a simple meal.

It was as if what Alex had witnessed did not happen at all.

While they ate, their mother asked about Alex and how the situation in the academy was going. She and Emily were curious about the ongoing competition, his father also looked at him at this moment with a curious face.

He genuinely wanted to know about the competition.

"It’s going fine, I got a junior student as my opponent and passed the first round of the competition," Alex said, and Emily immediately cheered happily.

Their parents also smiled, and their mother encouraged him to work hard in the following days.

Although her son just finally made some progress and could not use magic, what mother wouldn’t wish for their child to perform well?

The family chatted for a bit more until they finished their food, the mother and daughter pair proceeded to clean up the table.

Alex and his father were left alone at the dining table, both staring at each other.

"Thank you for not mentioning anything to them." His father suddenly said, stunning Alex slightly.

The man had been acting so naturally during dinner, and Alex didn’t expect him to suddenly bring up the matter after his mother and Emily left.

"Doesn’t mother know about this?" Alex asked curiously.

"She does, but I don’t want her to know that he came today and even made such a request; she might do something crazy." His father replied, a helpless smile forming on his face as his eyes turned distant. It was as if he was reminiscing about something.

Alex found this logical; mothers were the scariest when it involved their children.

Unknowingly, he had fallen into a daze as he recalled his family in his past life.

"Like I said before, you don’t have to think about it. Focus on the academy and the competition. Now that you have finally made progress, you should work hard to improve and show that you still have fight left in you. You’ll be graduating from the academy soon, I’ll help arrange for you to enter a good magic university.

As for the issue earlier, I naturally have plans."

Alex was pulled out of his daze by his father’s voice.

’Plans? What plans? That was a white lie!’

Alex thought to himself. He was aware how difficult it would be for his father to make 200,000 Zen before the coming week, unless he was planning to take another loan!

Somehow, Alex felt guilty about this. After all, the main reason for this debt was him. Well, not him, the previous Alex.

His father had spent most of the money on his mage journey, he felt that he should be the one to pay back the debt.

He naturally had the money, but how was he going to do it without his parents asking questions and worrying?

An idea immediately came to his mind, and his eyes lit up.

Looking at his son’s expression, an unusual frown formed on Zoran’s face.

What was this kid planning?

"I want to talk to you and Mom about something." Alex suddenly said, causing his father’s frown to deepen.

He had a bad feeling about this.

Some time later.

Three figures could be seen seated in the living room of Alex’s house, thick silence enveloped the place.

These three figures were naturally Alex and his parents, who were sitting opposite him. Emily had already gone to sleep, and he had invited his parents down for a night chat.

After a long period, his mother finally broke the silence in the room.

"Didn’t you say you had something to tell us? Why are you silent then? Did you get in trouble, or is it about my daughter-in-law?" His mother asked with a mixed expression of worry and teasing, trying to lighten the mood.

Alex’s face flushed red slightly when he heard her last question. When did his mother become such a teaser?

Recalling her from his memories, he realised that she had always been like this.

Alex frantically waved his hands and said that it wasn’t about any daughter-in-law; there was no daughter-in-law to begin with.

His mother giggled, seeing her son’s flustered expression made her feel happy.

"Then what is it about? Do you need something?" She asked.

His father also looked at him with an inquisitive look.

Alex took a deep breath before answering.

"No, that’s not it. What I want to talk about is that...I want to become an explorer."

His parents "..."

Alex "..."

’Why are you two staring at me like I just spoke some foreign language?!’

The living room fell into silence again for a long time before his mother spoke up.

"I won’t allow it, go to sleep." She said strongly while standing up.

Alex was shocked, since when was his mother so authoritative?!

"Mom, wait, listen to me first," Alex called out in an attempt to prevent his mother from standing up.

"Listen to what? I don’t want to hear anything. You are not becoming an explorer, and that’s final, especially not while you’re under my care; I refuse!" She declared.

Alex was speechless at her stubborn attitude, but still tried to speak, but was cut off by his mother.

"Do you even know what you’re saying? Telling us you want to become an explorer? Do you know how dangerous it is to face magic beasts? Go back to sleep and delete that thought from your mind. I want the only thing you think about after tonight to be the academy!" She spat, her eyes were now red and teary.

Alex "..."
