Chapter 53: Chapter 53: That Action

Nina Thorne must have been traumatized into a nightmare. Her expression was full of pain as her body trembled, a heartbreakingly fragile sight.

Justin Kane quickly pulled her into his arms, kissing her forehead over and over. "I’m here. Don’t be afraid. It’s all right."

His gaze was dark and forbearing, and his arms tightened around her.

He soothed her again and again, as if comforting a child.

Nina Thorne felt as if she had escaped a frozen wasteland for the warmth of a stove. Her emotions were gradually soothed, and she grew quiet in his arms.

She curled up against him, a small, slender, and soft bundle. Her hand clutched his shirt as she breathed in his scent, sinking back into a deep sleep.

Justin Kane felt his heart melt. He tightened his arms around her, lowered his head, and kissed her forehead over and over...

...

Nina Thorne didn’t wake up until noon.

She had clearly been exhausted from the day before and had done little else but sleep.

When she got up to freshen up, she didn’t see Justin Kane and assumed he had already left for the office.

To her surprise, when she went downstairs, she saw him standing behind the living room sofa, talking on the phone in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows.

His distinguished air was bathed in the warm sunlight, his handsome face somehow more dazzling than the sun itself.

Nina Thorne was mesmerized. Seeing that he was on a call, she didn’t go over to disturb him. Miss King had prepared a restorative tonic for her and told her to eat it after breakfast.

She obediently ate the tonic. Thinking back to yesterday’s events while watching Justin Kane on the phone, she felt as if she’d been reborn after a disaster.

"The CEO was worried you were weak, so he was up first thing this morning to instruct us to prepare a restorative tonic for you. Honestly, the CEO is just so good to you, ma’am."

Miss King joked, "He even makes a woman my age envious. Tell me, where could you possibly find a husband this wonderful?"

Nina Thorne agreed with Miss King from the bottom of her heart. ’Justin Kane really is a good man.’

’He’s not only responsible, but gentle, too.’

’And when it came to how he treated her, he was good beyond words.’

At this thought, she looked up at the tall, imposing figure before the floor-to-ceiling windows. The man wore black trousers and a white shirt, exuding a casual, relaxed air, his whole bearing one of noble ease. Yet, when he spoke to the person on the phone, his expression turned stern and cold.

’So charming.’

’No wonder he’s the perfect man all the women in Sylport dream of.’

Nina Thorne watched, completely entranced.

She didn’t know who he was talking to, but the call had already lasted for almost ten minutes.

Just then, Justin Kane’s gaze shifted, meeting her clear, limpid eyes, which shone like glass marbles.

He then gave her a small smile and pointed at the bowl in front of her, gesturing for her to finish it.

Nina Thorne nodded quickly and lowered her head to finish her food.

After eating, she went to the bathroom to wash her hands. When she came out, Justin Kane had finally ended his call.

He strode over to her, his dark eyes fixed on her. "Finished? How are you feeling today?"

Nina Thorne answered each of his questions in turn. "I finished. It was delicious. I’m feeling fine today, much better than last night."

When she’d woken up last night, her body had felt leaden, completely exhausted.

Justin Kane’s gaze fell to her feet, and his eyes suddenly darkened. "Why aren’t you wearing shoes?"

His tone was urgent. He turned, went to the dining table to retrieve her slippers, and knelt before her, grasping her slender, fair ankle.

"Put them on..."

"No, don’t," Nina Thorne said, her body jolting as if from an electric shock. How could she possibly let him put her shoes on for her? "I’ll do it myself."

Justin Kane stopped her as she began to squat. He looked up at her. "I’m your husband. Taking care of you is my responsibility."

Nina Thorne stared at him, stunned. She slowly straightened her body, letting him lift her foot and slide the slipper on.

The skin of his fingertips brushed against the arch of her foot, sending a soft, tingling sensation through her.

Her heart pounded in her chest, refusing to calm down for a long time.

The fluttering in her heart coursed through her body, leaving her both secretly thrilled and embarrassed.

As Justin Kane stood up, she chided, "I’m not a child. I can put my own shoes on."

"You’re so much younger than me. How does that not make you a child?" Justin Kane teased, relieved that she seemed to be in good spirits today.

Nina Thorne was speechless, finding it surprisingly hard to argue with that.

But they were married. She was almost twenty-three, a grown woman. She looked at him seriously and corrected him.

"It’s only a six-year difference. Don’t make yourself sound like an old man."

On that note, Justin Kane’s lifestyle was indeed mature and old-fashioned. In his nearly twenty-nine years, he had zero scandals and no romantic entanglements. There weren’t even rumors of him frequenting hedonistic establishments.

Everyone in their social circle knew Justin Kane was a man of integrity. His disciplined and self-respecting lifestyle was so extreme that everyone believed he was saving himself for someone.

"It’s enough that I’m older than you," Justin Kane’s lips curled, his smile unwavering. "Besides, you’re too thin. A strong gust of wind could blow you over. You have the frame of a child."

"That’s not true! I’ve developed just fine," Nina Thorne protested, puffing out her chest. "If you don’t believe me, look..."

’Wait a minute.’

’Why am I so eager to show him?’

Nina Thorne was utterly mortified and turned to leave.

But of course, Justin Kane wasn’t about to let her go. He hooked an arm around her waist and pulled her into his arms. "Look at what?"

His warm breath washed over Nina Thorne’s face, making her feel hot enough to explode.

’Why on earth did I do that?’ she regretted.

’Look? Look at what?’

’Was I telling him to look at my... impressive and otherwise indescribable assets?’

Nina Thorne bit her lip and bowed her head low, not daring to meet his eyes. "I... I was just talking nonsense."

Justin Kane’s gaze was searing as he tilted her chin up. "I actually liked how you were a moment ago. How about... you show me again?"

Nina Thorne’s face grew even hotter, the blush spreading to the tips of her ears.

Thankfully, Assistant Cheney’s voice rang out from the doorway. "CEO, there’s an urgent document that needs your signature..."

Assistant Cheney, who had appeared at a most inopportune moment a short distance away, was instantly hit by a frigid glare.

Justin Kane’s gaze was sharp as a knife. "There goes your bonus," he said coldly.

Assistant Cheney froze, wanting to cry but finding no tears.

’No, please, CEO!’ he thought. He truly hadn’t expected the CEO and his wife to be acting so intimate in the living room in broad daylight.

’Also, when did they get this intimate?’

Caught in such an intimate moment by Assistant Cheney, Nina Thorne couldn’t possibly blush any harder. She hurriedly pushed Justin Kane away with both hands.

"I’ll head upstairs. You two talk."

Justin Kane’s large hand held her waist firmly, preventing her from leaving. He leaned close, his warm, moist breath tickling her ear. "Then when I get back tonight, we can... research the matter further?" 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Nina Thorne nearly choked on her own spit.

’Isn’t he embarrassed at all? Assistant Cheney is still standing right there!’

’Besides, this man has always been cold and detached. How did he change so much after returning from abroad?’

’Not only did he unhesitatingly get a marriage license with her, but his formerly mature and steady image had suddenly taken on a roguish edge.’

But Nina Thorne wasn’t one to be easily intimidated. She readily agreed, "All right. We’ll talk when you get back."

Justin Kane gave a faint smile. "Good."

After that, Justin Kane said he had matters to attend to. Nina Thorne nodded and told him to be careful.

She had a vague feeling that wherever he was going, it was related to yesterday’s incident.

And in fact, she was right.

「Justin Kane went to the hospital.」

Inside the hospital room, in addition to Old Master Kane, the rest of the Kane family was also there.

"Justin, you’re finally here," Felicia Yates said, her face flushed with anger. "I’m asking you, what exactly did Cole do wrong? How could you beat him so severely that you broke several of his ribs?"

Cole Kane lay on the bed, his body wrapped in layers of bandages. His once-handsome face was swollen beyond recognition.

Serena Kane looked heartbroken. "Brother, just look at what you’ve done to Cole. No matter what happened, you shouldn’t have done this to him."

"Besides, who is this Nina Thorne to you anyway? You’ve beaten Cole on her account time and again. Don’t tell me there’s something shameful going on between you two, is there?"

Felicia Yates glared at him, her anger boiling over. "Exactly. What is going on? You’re going to give us a proper explanation today."

"Even if you’re the heir to the Kane family, that doesn’t give you the right to hurt your own brother!"

Justin Kane shot her an indifferent glance, his cold voice laced with insinuation. "My own brother? Are you sure about that?"
