Chapter 47: Chapter 47: Just Be My Wife

"Justin, what are you doing back?" Felicia Yates ran over in shock. "How could you lay a hand on your brother? Let him go, now."

Justin Kane twisted Cole Kane’s arm behind his back, his face expressionless as he walked step-by-step inside.

Cole, completely subdued, broke out in a cold sweat from the pain. "Bro, take it easy," he pleaded as he was forced to follow him.

Felicia didn’t know what was happening. She rushed back into the main hall after them, her heart aching with worry as she saw Cole’s pained expression.

"Justin, if you have something to say, say it properly! Let go, you’re killing your brother..."

"Yeah, bro, it hurts! Let go first..."

Nina Thorne was already back in the living room.

Justin Kane’s face was cold and taut. He slowly released his grip, shooting a cold glare at the mother and son. "Mother, you truly do dote on him."

Felicia’s expression stiffened.

Cole rubbed his wrist, which felt like it was about to break. Fuming but subdued, he demanded, "I didn’t even bully her! Why did you hit me again?"

"Who gave you permission to touch her?" Justin shot him a look, his expression as cold as ever.

His tall, straight figure stood in front of Nina Thorne, a clear gesture of protection. His powerful and domineering presence made her heart flutter.

She stared, mesmerized, at the curve of his profile. Her heart felt like a slender willow branch dipping into a lake, sending out faint ripples across the surface.

Cole was stunned into silence.

’He couldn’t understand why Justin protected Nina time and time again, and why he always showed up at the perfect moment.’

’Could it really be a coincidence?’

Just then, Serena Kane, who had been observing the commotion from upstairs, heard the cry of pain and rushed down.

She arrived just in time to see Justin, radiating hostility, teaching Cole a lesson for Nina’s sake yet again. It seemed to confirm a certain suspicion she had.

Her eyes darted about as she ran in front of Cole. "Justin, you keep treating Cole like this for Nina’s sake. What exactly is the relationship between you two?"

Felicia was completely baffled. "Serena, what do you mean by that?"

Nina’s heart sank. She looked at Justin with concern, but his expression remained as severe and composedly dominant as ever.

But his sharp gaze, like a knife, was fixed on Serena, making her shrink back in fear.

Serena forced herself to calm down and told Felicia about how Justin had recently been defending Nina and lashing out at Cole. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

As she listened, Felicia’s expression grew uglier and uglier. She turned to Justin, her face flushed with unconcealable anger. "Is what Serena said true?"

Justin’s face remained taut. He raised an eyebrow in a flicker of mockery. "Is there a problem?"

Felicia felt a tightness in her chest. Although she was his mother, Justin’s attitude toward her had always been lukewarm.

He wasn’t close to her like Cole was. Her anger increasingly turned toward Nina. "Why do you have to drag Justin into your problems with Cole? I used to think you were just spoiled and willful, but I never imagined you could be so malicious, destroying the relationship between two brothers like this."

Although Nina had long suspected that Felicia disliked her, seeing her show her true colors still felt like a knife twisting in her heart.

’It was sour, and a little ridiculous.’

’In that case, there’s no need for me to be polite with Felicia anymore.’ "Cole ignored my feelings time and time again, and even abandoned me on the day we were supposed to register our marriage to go welcome his so-called sister. You don’t blame him for that, but you blame me instead?"

"Let me ask you, would going with me to register our marriage have prevented him from welcoming Serena home later? As his sister, would Serena really get angry because her own brother went to register his marriage with his future sister-in-law instead of picking her up from the airport?"

Nina’s every word was sharp and pointed. "You all keep saying I’m spoiled and willful. I’d love to know, what exactly have I done wrong?"

Watching her defend herself with such confidence and flair, a hint of pleasure surfaced in the depths of Justin’s dark eyes.

Serena was shocked. ’It seems Nina has really reverted to her old confident, proud self.’

"How dare you speak to me with that attitude..." Felicia pointed at Nina, enraged.

Nina was neither humble nor arrogant, not giving an inch. "Respect has always been a two-way street. If you don’t respect me, why blame me for lashing out?"

"You’re completely insolent! You’re getting more and more out of line! This is my mom, your future mother-in-law, and you dare to treat her with such disrespect!"

Cole’s eyes blazed with anger. "Don’t think that just because my brother protects you and Grandpa dotes on you, I really won’t do anything to you!"

Seeing him charge aggressively toward Nina, a severe glint flashed in Justin’s eyes, and he clenched his fists.

SMACK!

A crisp slap suddenly echoed through the hall. Nina had raised her hand and struck Cole hard across the face.

Everyone was stunned.

Deep in Justin’s dark, profound eyes, a clear look of pleased surprise appeared.

’That’s my spitfire, all right. She’s becoming more and more like she was five years ago.’

"What gives you the right to order me around?"

Nina stared at Cole indifferently, clenching her jaw slightly as she gave a cold smile. "When I loved you, I could tolerate all your disrespect. But now, you listen to me. I, Nina Thorne, do not love you anymore!"

"After today, our engagement is officially broken. From now on, get out of my life!"

With that, Nina turned and walked away.

Her slender figure looked as if a gust of wind could knock her over, yet her departing back radiated an indescribable tenacity and courage.

Like a snow plum blossom standing tall in the cold wind—unyielding, stunning, and admirable.

"Nina!"

Cole’s voice was hoarse as he yelled after Nina’s retreating figure. He tried to chase after her, but Justin’s hand clamped down on his shoulder.

The force felt like a thousand pounds, pinning Cole in place. He could only stare blankly at his brother for a moment before the thought of pursuit vanished from his mind.

He looked back toward the door, but Nina was already gone. He gritted his teeth, unsure if what he felt was resentment or humiliation.

Felicia said in disbelief, "Justin, why are you so protective of Nina! Is it really like what Serena said?"

Justin had already retracted his hand. He raised an eyebrow and shot her a cold, severe look, warning, "You should think about whether you have any right to tell me what to do."

Justin turned and left indifferently.

Felicia’s face went deathly pale. She swayed, almost losing her footing.

"Mom, don’t be so angry. Take care of your health..." Serena quickly supported her, her eyes narrowing insidiously as she glanced toward the door.

’It seems the relationship between those two really is unusual.’

’If that’s the case, then I’ll make sure Nina Thorne’s reputation is utterly ruined!’

...

Nina intended to drive herself back to the villa. She had just gotten into the driver’s seat when Justin, who had chased after her, ushered her into the passenger seat.

As they drove, Justin expertly handled the car. He glanced over at her. "You were pretty cool today."

His magnetic voice was pleasant to listen to, and it held a hint of teasing laughter.

Nina had thought he would scold her. She looked at him in surprise. "Aren’t you going to blame me for hitting Cole at your house, right in front of your mother?"

Although Justin was her husband in name, in reality, everyone in that room, aside from Serena, was his immediate family.

If it had been Cole in his place, she would have been the one abandoned.

"As far as I’m concerned, you can do whatever you want."

Justin lifted a well-defined hand from the steering wheel and gently stroked Nina’s head. His voice was full of affection. "You just focus on being my wife. I’ll take care of everything else."
