Being Dumped by My EX, I Marriied His Older Brother-Chapter 46: Auntie, I Want to Break Off the Engagement
Nina Thorne had promised Mrs. Kane she would come to the Kane family home for dinner, so she knew she had to tell Justin Kane.
That evening, Justin Kane finally came home early, and Nina Thorne told him about it.
"Mm, that’s a good idea."
Justin Kane had a refined and elegant air. His eyes were as gentle as ever as he faced her. "Are you scared?"
He possessed the steady character of a mature man and seemed to be very considerate. Nina Thorne was always touched by how accurately he anticipated her feelings.
"I’m not," Nina Thorne said, actually looking forward to bringing up the engagement tomorrow. "I’ll talk to them properly."
"I’ll go with you." It wasn’t a question from Justin Kane, but a decision already made.
Nina Thorne was stunned for a few seconds. She looked up at him; his features were sharp and defined, with a straight, high-bridged nose. Beneath his deep-set brow, his dark eyes held a tenderness that could easily be misinterpreted.
"It’s okay, I can handle it myself." Nina Thorne didn’t want to affect his relationship with his family. After all, the news that she and Justin Kane were married would be a bombshell whenever it came out. "They don’t know about us yet. It might not be a good idea for us to go together."
Justin Kane’s eyes darkened slightly. He neither confirmed nor denied that he would go. "I’ll make the arrangements."
He exuded a subtle dominance. Nina Thorne knew how swift and ruthless he could be in his dealings, so his consideration for her was more than enough.
The next day at noon, Nina Thorne drove to the Kane family’s villa by herself.
Mrs. Kane, Felicia Yates, was waiting for her early. She had instructed the kitchen to prepare delicious food and affectionately took Nina Thorne’s hand the moment she saw her.
"Come, let me get a good look at you. You look like you’ve lost weight," Felicia Yates chided. "What on earth has that boy Cole Kane been doing? He hasn’t been taking good care of you. I had the kitchen make soup today, and some of your favorite dishes. You have to eat more..."
Felicia Yates’s enthusiasm was beyond what Nina Thorne had expected. It wasn’t that she disliked Nina, but their relationship had always been lukewarm in the past.
In contrast, Mr. Kane, Ethan Kane, genuinely doted on her. But he wasn’t here today, so she couldn’t see him, which made her unsure how to bring up breaking the engagement.
Nina Thorne subtly withdrew her hand, a polite smile on her lips. "Auntie, my weight is the same as before."
A flicker of embarrassment crossed Felicia Yates’s face. She quickly pulled Nina Thorne over to sit on the sofa and began asking after her well-being.
The questions were mostly mundane, and Nina Thorne answered them with a cool detachment.
Seeing her attitude, Felicia Yates dropped her smile and got straight to the point. "Nina, I know you and that boy Cole have been fighting lately, but men are like that. You just have to train them a bit. There’s no need to get hung up on minor issues."
"He was wrong not to go get the marriage license with you on your anniversary, but it was only because he was so happy that Serena was back. He just wasn’t thinking about your feelings for a moment..."
Felicia Yates took Nina Thorne’s hand again, patting the back of it gently. "For my sake, and because he and his sister hadn’t seen each other in years, can you give him another chance? Please?"
Although it sounded like Felicia Yates was trying to reconcile them, the subtext was that Nina Thorne was being unreasonable and inconsiderate of the siblings.
To put it bluntly, no matter how nicely Felicia Yates phrased it, in her heart, she would always side with Cole Kane.
Nina Thorne, indifferent to her opinion, pulled her hand back again. Her expression was cold as she said, "Auntie, I came today specifically to discuss the matter with Cole."
Felicia Yates was in her fifties, but her face showed few signs of age. However, Nina Thorne’s serious tone gave her a bad feeling.
She said, "Then tell me what’s on your mind. No matter what, Auntie will be on your side."
"I want to break off the engagement with Cole Kane," Nina Thorne said, cutting straight to the chase.
Felicia Yates’s expression changed instantly. "How did it get to the point of breaking the engagement?"
"Cole Kane and I were young and naive when we got together, and he doesn’t love me. Now that we know it was a wrong decision, we must correct it in time."
Nina Thorne spoke clearly and methodically. "During the five years we were together, we never did anything improper. Our relationship was completely innocent, so we can’t say anyone let the other down. Although Cole Kane and I broke up a month ago, the engagement was set by our two families, so I still need to formally discuss breaking it off with you and Uncle."
"Are you serious?" Felicia Yates was no longer calm.
Five years ago, when Nina Thorne and Cole Kane first got together, she hadn’t been pleased. But because of the business partnership between their families, she had reluctantly accepted Nina, even though she disliked her flamboyant personality.
Over the years, her feelings for Nina Thorne hadn’t warmed much, but Cole’s marriage to Nina would guarantee the Thorne Family’s support. The subsidiary would then officially be handed over to him. If they broke the engagement now, the patriarch might not go through with it.
Felicia Yates grew anxious. "It’s normal for couples to bicker and have disagreements. Nina Thorne, how can you talk about breaking the engagement so lightly? This is not child’s play."
Nina Thorne didn’t care what she said. Her expression was cool and resolute. "Auntie, my mind is made up. My grandfather also agrees to break off the engagement."
Seeing that Nina Thorne was completely unyielding and that no amount of persuasion would work, Felicia Yates could no longer keep up her affectionate act.
"Breaking an engagement is a serious matter. It’s not something you can just decide on your own! Cole Kane has indulged you in every way for the past five years. Are you this jealous just because he went to welcome Serena home on the day she returned?"
"Nina Thorne, Serena is Cole Kane’s sister! You can’t even tolerate her presence? No wonder you forced her to go abroad three years ago!"
Felicia Yates’s tone hardened. Her anger stripped away her dignified demeanor, revealing her true nature.
Nina Thorne wasn’t the least bit surprised by her attitude. Her clear eyes were perfectly calm. "Auntie, I’ve said what I needed to say. Please discuss it with Uncle."
She stood up to leave. For Justin Kane’s sake, she didn’t want to burn all her bridges, which would make things too awkward with Felicia Yates when her marriage to him was eventually revealed.
Felicia Yates shot to her feet.
"Nina Thorne, now you’re putting on airs, are you?" an angry voice boomed from upstairs. A tall figure then rushed down from the second floor, blocking Nina Thorne’s path.
"Haven’t you caused enough trouble? You were so in love with me for the past five years that you even toned down your personality just to marry me. Why are you acting so high and mighty now?"
"I’m telling you, if we really break this engagement, I won’t take you back even if you get on your knees and beg me!"
Nina Thorne narrowed her eyes. ’So he knew all along.’
’He knew she had constantly changed for him, transforming from a pampered, privileged young lady into someone gentle and considerate.’
’So it wasn’t that he didn’t know he was wrong. He just took everything she did for granted, assuming she would continue to love him humbly, fawning over him and trying to please him as she had in the past.’
’A scumbag like Cole Kane deserved to be thrown into a pigsty.’
A scornful sneer crept onto Nina Thorne’s face. "Then you’d better hurry up and announce our broken engagement to the world. I’ll be waiting." 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
Giving Cole Kane one last, icy glare, Nina Thorne walked around him, her posture straight and resolute as she headed for the door.
"Nina Thorne!"
"Nina Thorne!"
Two angry voices shouted in unison behind her. Cole Kane’s eyes were red with fury as he lunged after Nina Thorne, who had almost reached the door. He grabbed her shoulder and spun her around.
He threatened furiously, "If you dare walk out of here today, I swear I’ll break this engagement, and I’ll never get back with you, even if you beg!"
Nina Thorne frowned in disgust. ’Where does he get this confidence?’ she wondered.
Suddenly, a chilling presence drew near from behind. She turned her head to see that the hand Cole Kane had placed on her shoulder was now seized by the newcomer, who twisted it sharply.
Instantly, Cole Kane’s face contorted in pain, and a bloodcurdling scream echoed through the hall.
Justin Kane’s stern face was fixed on him, his eyes grim. "I told you, don’t touch her again."
Nina Thorne stared, stunned, at Justin Kane’s timely arrival, a silent wave of warmth enveloping her heart.
’He actually came!’
