Being Dumped by My EX, I Marriied His Older Brother-Chapter 27: A Crush
When Cole Kane saw Macy Lynch practically pinning Corinne Kerr down and beating her up, his face grew darker than a thundercloud.
"Nina Thorne, look at the kind of friends you keep! Tell her to stop right now, or I’m calling the police," Cole Kane threatened.
It had to be said, Cole Kane still knew exactly how to get to her.
Macy Lynch was a public figure; calling the police would damage her reputation.
Nina Thorne didn’t want Macy Lynch to get into trouble for her sake, so she walked over and patted Macy, who was straddling Corinne Kerr and slapping her relentlessly.
"Okay, that’s enough."
Macy Lynch did as she was told and stopped.
After getting up, she straightened her clothes and hair, smoothly put on her sunglasses and mask, and returned to her usual cool and glamorous image.
Macy Lynch delivered a harsh threat. "I’ll let you off for today. But if you dare run that filthy mouth again, I’ll make sure you don’t have a tongue left for bootlicking."
Serena Kane quickly helped Corinne Kerr up.
Corinne Kerr was a disheveled mess, her cheeks so swollen it was impossible to tell how many times she’d been slapped.
She pointed a finger at Macy Lynch and shrieked, "I’m going to have you arrested! Don’t you dare be smug!"
Macy Lynch clenched her fists, her knuckles CRACKING. "What did you say?"
Terrified, Corinne Kerr scrambled behind Serena Kane. Still not giving up, she pleaded with Cole Kane, "Mr. Kane, these two women are insane! It’s one thing for Macy Lynch to hit me, but Nina Thorne was trying to bully Serena too."
"The two of them are more vicious than the other. They even said Serena was a shameless homewrecker who seduced you... they said every nasty thing you can imagine. A woman like her is utterly venomous. If you’re really going to marry her, you’d better think twice."
Macy Lynch’s face darkened. "Still spouting nonsense, are you? Looks like I went too easy on you."
"Enough!"
Cole Kane moved swiftly, blocking Serena Kane and glaring at Macy Lynch. "Believe it or not, with a single phone call, I can make you lose everything you have."
Macy Lynch’s anger flared. "Cole Kane, are you blind? For all these years, they’ve been targeting Nina Thorne, kicking her while she’s down right in front of you. Can’t you see that?"
Cole Kane’s gaze was harsh. "All I see is you beating someone to this state. If it weren’t for Nina Thorne, you’d be at the police station right now."
"You just try me. I can’t stand people like you, who get older but not wiser. It’s like your brain is shrinking—you can’t even tell friend from foe," Macy Lynch retorted, confronting him head-on. Though she feared losing her resources, she never backed down from a threat.
Especially when she couldn’t stand seeing how wronged Nina Thorne was by him.
Rage radiated from Cole Kane, and he gritted his teeth so hard they could have shattered.
Serena Kane looked aggrieved as she said to Cole Kane, "Brother, if you hadn’t come, I would have ended up just like Corinne. I really don’t know why Nina Thorne hates me so much, especially when she’s already hurt me so badly."
’Today, I’ve really seen what a master-class manipulator can do,’ Macy thought.
’An aged vintage, at that!’
’Someone as straightforward as Nina Thorne is no match for her.’
Macy Lynch let out a tsking sneer, but before she could speak, Nina Thorne grabbed her arm, signaling for her to hold back.
"Nina Thorne, don’t you think you owe us an explanation?" Cole Kane stared at her, his tone dripping with false magnanimity.
"And if I did, would you even believe me?" Nina Thorne shot back with a sarcastic smile.
Cole Kane couldn’t stand it when she put on that holier-than-thou act. He sneered, "Of course not. With your spoiled little rich girl temper, you have to cause a huge scene over the slightest displeasure."
"You should have gotten it all out of your system at the hospital last time. And now you’re letting Macy Lynch bully her? Nina Thorne, it looks to me like you’re trying to drive her to her death," Cole Kane accused, his expression full of rage.
Nina Thorne’s hands involuntarily clenched into fists. She had known he would say something like this.
’To think I was with this piece of trash for five years.’ Nina Thorne wanted to slap herself.
Seeing Nina Thorne’s silence, Cole Kane assumed she felt guilty and doubled down on his reprimand. "Nina Thorne, acting like this only makes me more determined to break off our engagement!"
"I couldn’t ask for more."
Nina Thorne took a step closer, her expression icy as she stared him down. "You’d better keep your word. Don’t give me another reason to look down on you."
With that final, harsh remark, Nina Thorne took Macy Lynch’s hand and left.
Cole Kane’s face was a mask of shock.
’I thought that after a couple of days to cool off, Nina Thorne would come to me, admit she was wrong, and apologize.’
’Could it be? Has Nina Thorne really given up on me for good?’
The thought sent a sliver of fear through Cole Kane, and he made a move to chase after them.
Sensing something was wrong, Serena Kane quickly grabbed his arm, her body swaying weakly. "Brother, my chest... it hurts so much."
Cole Kane immediately steadied her. He glanced at the injured Corinne Kerr, then pushed his other thoughts aside. "I’ll take you to the hospital."
...
Nina Thorne took Macy Lynch home.
Just as she was about to leave, Macy Lynch suddenly pulled her into a tight hug, her voice filled with heartache. "Nina, no matter what happens in the future, I’ll always be by your side. I’ll be your best friend, your confidante, your family."
A pang of sorrow in Nina Thorne’s heart instantly brought warmth to her eyes.
"Me too," Nina Thorne said as tears fell. She raised her arms to hug her back. "No matter what happens, you are my best friend, my confidante, my family."
To her, Macy Lynch wasn’t family, but she was closer than any relative.
The two hugged for a while before letting go. Macy Lynch wanted Nina Thorne to stay the night, but Nina declined, saying she had a manuscript to write.
Macy Lynch walked her to the door, then remembered something. "Oh, right. Are you going to the fundraising gala in three days?"
Nina Thorne replied, "It’s for a good cause. I’ll go and do my small part."
Macy Lynch understood. "Okay, I’ll go too. We can go together."
Nina Thorne nodded with a faint smile and agreed.
...
「Ten o’clock at night.」
Nina Thorne opened her WeChat conversation with Justin Kane.
Around five that afternoon, Justin Kane had sent her a one-word message: Arrived.
At the time, Nina Thorne had been arguing with Serena Kane at the mall and had missed it.
Now, Nina Thorne hesitated. ’Should I call to check in on him?’
’But what if I disturb him while he’s busy with something important?’
After mulling it over, Nina Thorne gave up on the idea. She left her phone to charge in her room and went downstairs to write.
She wrote until twelve-thirty before returning to her room and picking up her phone.
There was a missed call from Justin Kane.
Nina Thorne’s heart leaped with joy, and she immediately called back.
It rang several times before the call was finally connected.
"You..." Nina Thorne started to ask why he was still awake, but a clear, cool female voice on the other end spoke first. "Hello, who is this?"
Nina Thorne froze for a few seconds. She glanced at her screen—she hadn’t dialed the wrong number.
Her heart suddenly started racing, and with a ROAR in her ears, her mind went completely blank.
"Hello? May I ask who’s calling?" the woman prompted again.
Nina Thorne suddenly remembered what Justin Kane had mentioned the night before—that there was someone he liked.
She subconsciously assumed that the woman who answered the phone was the person he liked.
As if she had just stumbled upon a terrible secret, Nina Thorne hastily hung up the phone.
Instantly, her heart clenched, and her hands began to tremble uncontrollably.
’In the middle of the night... what kind of relationship would a man and woman have to be in to be together like that?’
Nina Thorne seemed to guess what it meant. A bitter smile touched her lips. ’Looks like I’m about to get divorced.’
With that thought, she picked up her phone and searched for the procedures required for a divorce.
Then, she quickly changed the contact name for Justin Kane’s number to: Scumbag 2.0.
Just as she finished, the phone screen lit up with an incoming call.
Nina Thorne stared at the newly edited caller ID, and her heart skipped a beat.
