Becoming a Monster-Chapter 86: Don’t badmouth Noah
Chapter 86: Chapter 86: Don’t badmouth Noah
Noah screamed in frustration as he lunged at Fenrir, attempting to tackle the massive creature. To others, Fenrir might appear as a terrifying beast, but to Noah, he was just a clumsy, oversized ball of fur.
Noah’s attempt to tackle Fenrir accomplished little beyond getting his face pricked by the creature’s hard, dried-blood-encrusted fur. Despite his failure to move Fenrir, his actions did make Fenrir stop and look at him in confusion, wondering why his alpha was suddenly showing him affection in such a peculiar manner.
"You eat too?" Fenrir seemed to ’ask,’ making a strange, disgusting retching noise. To Noah, Fenrir’s communication sounded perfectly clear, like plain speech, whereas to anyone else, it would be mere growls and grunts.
With a sickening lurch, Fenrir regurgitated the contents of his stomach, spilling some of the partially digested eggs he had eaten. He nudged the mess toward Noah, as if offering to share his meal.
Noah’s face paled when he saw the hot mess being brought his way. "No, no, that’s not what I meant!" He exclaimed, using all of his strength to try to push Fenrir’s head away from him.
"I don’t want what you already ate! I just need you to stop eating!" Noah exclaimed, quickly shuffling away from Fenrir. Imagining how many eggs the wolf had devoured gave him a headache. He arrived at the large gap in the Queen’s backside, where the eggs had likely spilled from, and resolved to find anything salvageable. Determined, he submerged both arms up to his shoulders in the Queen’s insides, the sound of plopping innards echoing as he threw them to the ground, hoping to find at least one egg.
’If I can get one egg while it’s still intact, maybe I could potentially have another creature without having to use my skill... Damn, why do I have to deal with two gluttons?’ fгeewebnovёl.com
Five minutes passed, and he had yet to find anything resembling an egg. Taking one last handful of the ant queen’s guts, he threw them aside before rising to his feet with a heavy sigh.
"Maybe all my luck was used up on the chest... At least I can still get its core and test out my new skill. It should be a tier-one core, so the improvements to Fenrir and Arachne should be significant before they evolve," he muttered, glancing over at Fenrir, who was happily crunching on one of the ant’s legs.
"You, come here," Noah called out to Fenrir, who seemed oblivious to his annoyance. Fenrir, overcome with excitement from the hunt and his hearty meal, bounded over eagerly.
Fenrir trotted over to Noah’s side, wagging his tail. Noah felt utterly helpless at how clueless the wolf could be. Ignoring Fenrir’s enthusiasm, he pulled a core from his ring and showed it to him. Fenrir sniffed it, then became dejected.
"I need you to find something like this for me in that creature, can you do that?" Noah said, walking over to the middle section of the ant and pointing to it. "It might be here. Quickly, fi—"
Before he could finish, Fenrir had already smashed into the ant’s abdomen with his jaws, feverishly trying to bite through the hard shell.
Noah stood to the side and watched, uncertain if the core would really be there. The spiders’ cores had been in their abdomens, but after spending so much time looking for the eggs, he hadn’t seen anything resembling a core back there. This left the abdomen and the head as his only options.
It didn’t take long for Fenrir to penetrate the shell, thanks to his strengthened teeth and claws. Once he managed to bite through, he used his claws to tear at the sides, widening the hole enough for his entire head to fit inside the ant’s abdomen in search of the core.
"Gggrrrr"
Fenrir’s growl caught Noah’s attention. He recognized that sound—it meant Fenrir had likely found something. When Fenrir pulled his head out from the ant’s carcass, covered in slime and whatever else was inside, Noah saw the stone lodged in his jaws.
Retrieving the stone, Noah wiped it off with the outside of his cloak before placing it into his ring. He patted the driest part of Fenrir’s head as a reward.
"We both need to take the time to clean ourselves..." He said, not talking to particularly anyone but himself. He knew he had been idle for too long; Arachne might have already emerged from her cocoon.
"Fenrir, come." Noah walked a little bit away from the ant to allow Fenrir space to walk over as he stood by Fenrir’s side. Fenrir quickly walked over, laying down when Noah motioned him to the ground before Noah proceeded to try to climb on his back.
"Whoa! Calm down will yah?" he snapped as Fenrir grew excited, realizing what Noah planned to do. As soon as Noah mounted him, Fenrir jumped to his feet, nearly causing Noah to fall. "Easy, easy," Noah said, adjusting his grip and steadying himself.
Fenrir asked excitedly, his feet moving sporadically in place and his tail wagging uncontrollably. Noah couldn’t help but smile at Fenrir’s enthusiasm, which managed to deescalate his annoyance over the missed opportunity with the creature’s eggs.
"Sigh... let’s go back to Arachne!" Noah said, but before he could finish his sentence, Fenrir took off in a dash, eager to reunite with their companion. Chuckling at Fenrir’s eagerness, Noah held on tight as they raced back towards Arachne.
...
"Do you think he’s coming back?"
"Why do you care if he does? Being around him is just as scary as being around those monsters."
"Well...his spider is still here...I don’t think he’ll be gone for long."
"Did you see how easily his wolf took care of those ants?? We wouldn’t have had to fight at all if he came with us."
"Shush! Be quiet...last time someone spoke of that, they were ye-"
"Why do you all admire that bastard!" Mark screamed out, startling and frightening the people who were in the midst of talking.
"He’s not the one keeping you alive, we are! He wouldn’t care if any of you were to die right now and you want someone like that around?" Mark’s words hung heavy in the air, casting a shadow over the gathered group. The silence that followed was suffocating, each person conflicted with their own thoughts and emotions. How could they answer yes and not upset Mark even more? Even if Noah didn’t care about their lives, it was already proven multiple times that if he’s around then all the monsters would be taken care of by that experience junkie. Amidst the uncertainty and unease, one thing remained clear: Noah’s presence was a double-edged sword, both a source of strength and a cause for concern.
"What if he ran into that zombie from before??" Bailey gasped, her voice thick with genuine concern as she covered her face. The thought of inadvertently endangering Noah, not once but twice, weighed heavily on her mind. They had unwittingly led the zombie into the campus, putting Noah’s life at risk, and the guilt gnawed at her conscience.
At the thought of the absurdly powerful zombie confronting Noah, a small smirk appeared on Mark’s face, a hint of anticipation flickering in his eyes. However, amidst the tension, there was someone else present who seemed even more eager for such an encounter.
"I hope he does..."
Thud!
"Aaaahhh!" Regina fell to the ground, clutching her head in agony. Upon closer inspection, blood could be seen seeping from her hands, covering the wounded area. Pam, who for some reason always stayed by Regina’s side, drew a spear that she "borrowed" from one of the fresh dead bodies that just so happened to "trip" into the arms of a zombie, just moments before Ishii and the group arrived to help.
"You bitch! What’s wrong with you?" Pam screamed at Ailetta, who was still heaving and clutching the rod in her hands.
When Mark badmouthed Noah, Ailetta had been irritated, but his insults didn’t bother her as much as Regina’s words about him did. In a moment of anger, she had swung at Regina before she could even realize what she was doing. As far as she was concerned, she didn’t regret it at all.
"I hope you can say that to his face when he comes back. You’re already lucky that he hasn’t killed you yet!" Ailetta’s words that seemed to be laced with venom weren’t able to reach Regina, the pain disrupted her senses while she continued writhe in pain. However her words caused Pam to become alarmed.
"You or that freak won’t touch a hair on her head while I’m here!"
"I already did!" Ailetta snapped back angrily.
"Ailetta stop this please!
The tension between Ailetta and Regina escalated into a heated battle of words, finally being interrupted by Jasmine, who couldn’t bear to see her friend behaving in such a way. She grabbed Ailetta’s hand, noticing that Ailetta didn’t resist, began to drag her away from the confrontation. Meanwhile, Bailey and Isabelle rushed to de-escalate the situation with Pam and attend to Regina’s wound.
Bailey reasoned with Pam while Isabelle, now a couple of levels higher, swiftly healed the wound on Regina’s head. With Isabelle’s enhanced abilities, the wound only took a few minutes to heal. While Isabelle focused on Regina, she also took the opportunity to check on the others, ensuring that there was no risk of infection.
"Yo-you slut! You’re just as crazy as that bastard! Both of you deserved everything that was done to you, I hope you and Noah both die!" As the situation seemed to be calming down, Regina lashed out in anger, hurling hurtful insults at Ailetta.
Ailetta’s rage surged as Regina’s outburst fueled her fury. Gripping her rod with all her meager strength, she felt the overwhelming urge to reanimate one of the nearby intact zombies and unleash it upon Regina, to make her pay for her insolence. The idea began to take shape in her mind, growing more than just a passing thought.
But just as Ailetta was on the brink of acting on her dark impulse, a voice shattered the tense silence, yelling in the distance. The sound grew louder, approaching rapidly, snapping Ailetta out of her vengeful trance. Intrigued and wary, she turned her attention toward the source of the commotion.
Before anyone could figure what was happening, the huge figure of Fenrir running towards them came into view.
Everyone jumped in fright out instinct when they saw the beast approaching with incredible speed, its explosive strides sounding loudly in the air. Briefly forgotten was the fact that Fenrir was a tamed creature.
"Ahh noo! Get away, get away!"
"Regina??"
In a state of hysteria, Regina could be seen sprinting toward the nearest dormitory they had attempted to enter earlier. Terrified, she believed that Noah had overheard her words and had sent Fenrir to pursue her. As she fled, her pants began to bear a stain that slowly crept down her legs while she screamed unabated.
Regina’s heart pounded in her chest, each beat echoing her terror. She cursed herself for letting her fear overtake her rationality. Every step she took felt like an eternity, the dormitory door appearing further and further away. She could feel the eyes of Fenrir burning into her back, his presence looming like a dark shadow.
As she stumbled, Regina felt a surge of adrenaline, propelling her forward despite the growing weakness in her legs. Her mind raced with thoughts of escape, her desperation drowning out any semblance of reason. By the time she entered the door, gaining a sense of safety, a flicker of doubt emerged, had Noah truly sent Fenrir after her, or was it merely her own paranoia consuming her?
Desperate for her survival, she nervously chewed on her once pristine nails. Her eyes wandered dangerously back in fourth, deciphering her next course of action.
Meanwhile, Noah remained oblivious to the little spectacle that unfolded between them as he focused on recovering from Fenrir’s stunt. Well it started off as something not very entertaining to Noah at first, but...
"Next time, I’ll use my skill to buff up your speed. I wonder if I increased your strength would that make you go faster too? We definitely have to do that again!" Noah’s enthusiasm beamed with so much emotion that the people spectating were having a hard time determining if it was the same Noah as before.
"Noah!"
Noah’s train of thought was interrupted by a familiar voice calling out to him. He turned to see Ailetta rushing toward him, her smile stretching from ear to ear.
"Oh! Hey Le." he responded casually, as if they had already met and her life had never been in danger.
