Chapter 59: Chapter 59: Monarch-level demon?

"Grimace Crab!"

"How can there be so many Grimace Crabs? Don’t they live in the ocean? How could they appear at the Bund?"

"Did we lose Crimson Abyss Island?"

Tina Baine’s eyes widened in shock as she stared at the scene before her. Her usually bright and playful expression was replaced by an almost dull disbelief.

The appearance of the grimace crabs wasn’t the most terrifying part—nor was the commander-level Black Gold Ironclad Crab.

The real fear lay in the implications.

The Grimace Crab clan belonged to the Kraken Tribe. The great number of Krakens here at the heart of the Magic Capital could only proclaim one thing: that Crimson Abyss Island, the first line of defense against the Kraken Tribe, probably had fallen.

"I don’t think so," Luke replied, shaking his head. "If Crimson Abyss Island had fallen already, there wouldn’t just be the Grimace Crabs here by now. It must be a monarch-level demon."

"But how does this mean the Grimace Crabs came from Crimson River?" Tina asked, her voice quivering slightly.

Luke furrowed his brow and looked sharply around. "Perhaps they came through the sewers. Just like what happened in Silvercrest City. The Krakens love hidden passages."

"What do we do now, Luke?" Marissa Jones asked, pursing her lips with concern, her cold hands tucked in her pockets.

She faced Luke, knowing him to be the only one strong enough to face the commander-level demon on their behalf. Marissa and Zoe Miller were capable mid-level mages; they could hardly provide support against the bulk of the grimace crabs’ invasion.\

Tina was a beginner-level mage, with only hopes of a mediocre survival.

Luke turned to Marissa and said, "How far along is your summoning system?"

Marissa hesitated before answering, "I am at the third level with regards to the primary level. I feel like I am on the verge of a breakthrough."

The ascension of the summoning system was highly dependent on its mental capacity. Weaker ones didn’t progress up high. Since Marissa had been training with respect to the control of her dark mandala flowers for a while now, the turnout of her spiritual power was notably appreciable.

With this progress behind, his summoning system was likely to be at a fair pace in this life.

Marissa looked a tad baffled before him. "Good enough," Luke said with a nod. "Now it is the best time for you to push to the middle level."

"But if I don’t, you may have to work harder," he added with a mischievous smile.

It was the Skywing Wolf, a grand commander-level demon.

The crowd on the Bund fell silent, their fear growing as the Skywing Wolf’s intimidating presence filled the air.

But instead of attacking humans, the Skywing Wolf flew straight toward the Black Gold Ironclad Crab.

For a while, the people looked perplexed.

"Is the Skywing Wolf attacking the Black Gold Ironclad Crab?" someone inquired in a hushed voice.

"Could that even be the case of mage beasts?"

"Contracted? A demon belonging to such a class?"

The fact that a few high-level mages were present to rebound would already indicate that a tense moment had dissipated.

"It would be more miraculous if the Skywing Wolf were to attack the Black Gold Ironclad Crab and somehow do something to it," remarked Logan Quinn, a teacher at Celestial Academy who spoke in amazement mixed with disbelief.

"Stay focused on the Grimace crabs and that Shadow Shrimp," hollered yet another high-level mage. "Let that Skywing Wolf be the one to deal with the commander crab!"

Meanwhile, on the shore, where most people watched the duel that was unfolding before their eyes, Marissa turned to Zoe. "We need to deal with the coming ashore grimace crabs. We cannot let too many fall for the assault."

Zoe gave the signal that she understood. "Tina, you stay close to us. Don’t wander off."

Instead, Tina wasn’t listening. Her eyes were riveted to the river, tears flowing down her cheeks.

"Luke... why did he jump into the river?!" she screamed. "So many demons are below! No matter how strong, he’ll never be able to fight them all."

As she shouted, her voice cracked at the end; her hands trembled as she tried dialing a number on her phone.

Marissa and Zoe exchanged panicking glances. Unlike Tina, they knew Luke’s secret — he could transform into the Skywing Wolf.

But Tina’s agonizing panic and distress made Marissa and Zoe feel a little bit guilty.

"Tina, listen to me," Marissa spoke in an all-so-gentle tone. "Luke is a great deal stronger than you think. You have to trust him."

"If he ever had a way to keep the demons in line, surely, he would have used it!" Tina snapped. "What makes you think he can handle this crap?!"

"Tina!" Zoe overhead her, speaking kind but firm. "Do you really think he would risk his life for nothing? You must see how calculating he is. He knows full well what he’s doing."

"Really?" she asks meekly after a pause, staring down at her phone.

"Really," said Marisa. "Trust us. Trust him."

On the shore, as engrossed as ever in their conversation, Luke, as the Skywing Wolf, fought with the Black Gold Ironclad Crab in the river.

"Absorbing your soul must finally get me to the mid-commander level," Luke thought, wicked glee blossoming on his lupine face.

With a mighty flap of his wings, Luke released a fierce wind attack.

"Demon Law: Annihilation Gale!"

The wind roared through the wrecked crabs, carrying them rapidly across the water and toward the Black Gold Ironclad Crab.

The crab clicked its pincers angrily, its dark-golden plating glistening in the sun.

The two commander-level demons locked eyes, their auras colliding in an exquisite display of raw power.

From the distance, spectators anticipated the outcome, just as the Skywing Wolf and the Black Gold Ironclad Crab prepared to clash.

For many, the Skywing Wolf was both terrifying and reassuring in his appearance.

"Maybe we do have a chance," said a voice somewhere in the crowd.
