Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Bloody Alert

"One against three."

"I can’t afford it."

"???"

"I can’t afford to be three, what color are you trying to give me there, and I just threw down two bombs!"

Several rough men in military uniforms sat near the Crimson Abyss River, playing poker with an air of leisure. Their loud laughter and boisterous voices drew disapproving glances from nearby passersby.

"Look at them," muttered Charlie Wagner, throwing down his cards. "Acting so high and mighty. Without us, they wouldn’t last a day!"

Daniel Russel, sitting across from him, smirked. "Yeah, yeah, less complaining, more playing. You’ll need that foot massage money later."

Ethan slammed the table. "Foot massage? You mean you’re paying, right? It’s your fault I’m losing—how many cannons have you fired, Daniel?"

Daniel burst out laughing. "You lost fair and square, Ethan. Don’t blame me!"

Josh Kane, their commanding officer, leaned back in his chair, observing the scene with a mixture of amusement and irritation. He had seen this camaraderie play out countless times among his squad.

But just as Zach took a drag from his cigarette, a chill crept down his spine. His military instincts, honed over years of battle, kicked in.

"Daniel, something’s wrong," Josh said, standing abruptly.

Daniel Russel froze mid-laugh. "What’s up, Captain?"

Josh didn’t answer. Instead, he grabbed Daniel by the collar and yanked him to his feet. "We’re checking the post—NOW!"

The two sprinted toward the riverbank, where Charlie had been stationed as part of their rotating watch. But as they approached, an eerie silence enveloped the area.

When they arrived, their worst fears were realized.

"Charlie !" Josh called out, his voice shaking. But Charlie Wagner lay motionless on the ground, his body mangled beyond recognition. His lower half had been completely severed, and blood pooled around him.

Daniel staggered backward, clutching his mouth. "What... what did this?"

Before Josh could answer, a sickening noise filled the air—the unmistakable grinding of claws on stone. Emerging from the Crimson Abyss River were dozens of grotesque grimace crabs, their black shells glistening and their glowing red eyes fixed on the shoreline.

"Grimace crabs!" Daniel shouted, his voice breaking.

Then, with a deafening roar, a massive, dark-golden pincer erupted from the river, cutting through the water with terrifying force. The river itself seemed to split in two, revealing a horde of demons crawling from its depths.

The Demon Oriental Pearl Tower emitted a piercing alarm, signaling a bloody alert—a rare and catastrophic warning reserved for the most dangerous demon invasions.

The chaos spread quickly. People on the Bund, unaware of the growing threat, froze in confusion as the alarm blared.

"Demons!" someone screamed. "There are demons in the river!"

Within moments, pandemonium erupted. Tourists fled in every direction, screaming and pushing as they tried to escape.

"Why is this happening here?" a man shouted. "This is the center of the magic capital! Where’s the military?"

Even some lower-level mages faltered, their hands trembling too much to connect the stars needed to cast spells.

"I’m a teacher from Celestial Academy, Logan Quinn!" a voice boomed, amplified by sound magic.

A man in a sharp black suit flew into the air, his calm demeanor cutting through the chaos. "Everyone, evacuate in an orderly fashion! Reinforcements are on the way!"

Behind Logan, a group of high-level mages soared into the air, heading toward the riverbank. Though outnumbered, they were determined to hold the line until the military arrived.

Despite their courage, the situation was dire. The grimace crabs numbered in the tens of thousands, and among them were several warlord-level demons—each one capable of decimating entire squads of mid-level mages.

But the greatest threat loomed above the river: the owner of the dark-golden pincer. Its massive form remained submerged, but its aura was enough to sap the resolve of even the bravest fighters.

Luke, standing on a nearby rooftop with Marissa, Tina, and Zoe, surveyed the scene.

"Crabs, lobsters, scallops... Is it just me, or does this feel more like a seafood festival?" Luke quipped, a wry grin on his face.

Marissa rolled her eyes. "Luke, focus."

"But seriously," Luke continued. "A little butter, some garlic... We could make a feast out of this."

"Enough!" Marissa snapped.

Tina giggled, despite the gravity of the situation. "You’re unbelievable, Luke."

"All jokes aside," Marissa said, her tone serious, "we can’t just stand here. People are dying."

Tina nodded. "Yeah, we’ve got to help!"

Luke smirked, his confidence unshaken. "Of course. I was just waiting for you to say the word."

The group leapt into action, their magic flaring as they prepared to face the oncoming horde.

As they approached the riverbank, they were greeted by the sight of high-level mages desperately holding the line. Spells of fire, ice, and lightning lit up the battlefield, but the grimace crabs continued to swarm forward, their sheer numbers overwhelming the defenders.

Luke raised his hand, summoning a brilliant burst of flame. "Time to turn up the heat!"

Marissa unleashed a wave of vines, entangling several crabs and crushing them under their own weight. Tina, meanwhile, darted through the chaos, her agility allowing her to strike with precision.

Zoe provided support from the rear, her healing spells ensuring that wounded mages could continue fighting.

As Luke incinerated another group of crabs, a strange sensation washed over him.

"Wait a minute..." he muttered, his eyes narrowing. "Crabs, lobsters, scallops... This is starting to feel a little too familiar."

Marissa glanced at him. "What are you talking about?"

Luke grinned. "If I didn’t know any better, I’d say we just stumbled into the world’s deadliest seafood buffet."

Marissa groaned. "Luke, I swear—"

But before she could finish, the dark-golden pincer struck again, sending a shockwave through the battlefield.

Luke’s expression turned serious. "Alright, enough messing around. Let’s finish this."
