Chapter 349: Fates

"What is it?" Lyra asked, getting anxious as his silence prolonged, "What is happening, Victor?" He could not just inform her about the fight and then remain silent for what felt like hours. In reality, it was barely a minute, but she felt otherwise.

Sensing his mate’s erratic emotions, Victor finally turned to her as he said, "They have stopped fighting, and I think the Fox king has left."

She blinked. "He left?" It came out as a doubt, a cautionary step to make sure she was hearing right. And when Victor gave an affirmative nod in reply, she visibly relaxed. It felt like the rock suffocating her chest was taken away. "Thank God."

Lyra calmed her breathing. She didn’t want to accidentally harm her baby again. Then she made up her mind. It didn’t matter even if it was for politics or as a means to follow the Beast city’s rules; she would never again allow Xavier’s presence near her and her mates. That madman must remain as far as possible from her life. She would make sure of it.

...

While Lyra’s uneasiness dissipated, someone else’s rose to the degree of no return.

Kalena couldn’t believe her eyes. The image before her made her shudder. Fear, doubt, anger, and much more filled inside her. The face inside the Mirage was something she could never forget. The truth consumed her like the deadliest thorn, not letting her take a single step towards reality. She felt like she would remain in this mirage forever.

Alas, that wouldn’t happen. Everything came to an end, and so did the Mirage. Her powers inside the mortal body were limited. The image she had managed to conjure disappeared like a wisp.

"Why does he have that man’s face?" She asked no one in particular. It had become a habit of hers. Locked up inside the room with minimal contact with the outside world in order to concentrate all her powers to stay inside Elena’s body had made her come to terms with her own loneliness. She sometimes talked to herself, knowing that she couldn’t reveal her true identity to the people here. Not even to this mortal body’s mates.

At least when Gregory was here, she would talk freely and plan for her goals, but all of that had stopped once that nutcase left to find Iria. He and his irksome love would be the end of her. She just hoped he wouldn’t forget their goals in the process of finding the woman that very clearly didn’t love or want him.

"I have to confirm it for myself." Kalena brought her attention back to the face she saw in her Mirage. The Fox king...he looked like Lord Xenon. The man that killed her mother because of some other whore. The man that Kalena thought was damned to hell had somehow returned. But how? Angels that crossed Heaven’s rules didn’t get reincarnated. Or was this Xavier just someone that looked like Lord Xenon and had a completely different soul?

Everything was making her confused. Like she had thought, the only way to confirm and solve this mess was by checking the scrolls.

The scrolls were woven by mistresses of fate. To do that, she had to travel to the heavenly realm. Kalena looked down at the mortal body she was occupying. There was no other way. She has to abandon this shell for a while.

She lay down on the bed and briefly closed her eyes. Channeling all her powers, she separated herself from the body and stood beside it. Elena would be unconscious for the next 24 hours. That was the time limit she had to complete her task and return.

Now in her true form, Kalena’s powers were just like before. She hadn’t felt like this in a long time, like herself. Ascending to the heaven was easy, but her real struggle was only starting. Finding the Mistresses of Fate was not easy, especially not for just an angel like her. If only she were Archangel.

Kalena stopped herself from going into that endless pit of overthinking and decided to remain in the present. The past couldn’t be changed; what was done can never be undone. But she had a future all to herself. She vowed to gain everything she has wished for one day in the future.

Only when she searched for hours on end did she start to lose her composure. In a blink of an eye, she had spent half a day. The mistresses were nowhere to be found. She searched the entire heavenly realm and couldn’t find them. Then it struck her: if they weren’t here, then they could be only in that place.

Kalena’s powers fought against her as she made her way to the Erebus, the sinful realm. The place that mortals referred to as Hell. This was no place for her as an angel. But she had little choice left at this place. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

She passed the wandering souls and the demons into the darkest territory of Erebus. And there she found them. Near the waterfall that looked crystal white, the mistresses were weaving the threads of fates.

They continued their work without even casting a glance at her. Even when she neared them and searched through the scrolls, they remained silent. Intervening with anything outside their task was forbidden for them.

Whatever Kalena was doing, that was part of her fate, and they could do nothing about it. Her actions and their consequences were her own burdens to bear. But one thing was absolute. Kalena could see anyone’s fate but not her own. And she could never change somebody’s fate. Not even if she tried her hardest. Fate was fixed and couldn’t be changed, not even by the gods themselves.

Once she found Xenon’s scroll, Kalena felt her powers fluctuate. This was a warning, but she chose to ignore it and opened the scroll. As soon as she did, memories started to flood her mind. Her shared past with him as her father was also mentioned here, but that was not what she wanted. She turned the threads to the page about his death. But no matter how much she tried, she couldn’t find out about the way he died. It was as though something was obscuring her from deciphering it. Something more powerful than her. Her power’s limitation only made her more bitter.

Kalena turned more threads, hoping to at least find out about his reincarnation. And there she did; he was fated to be born of sin. His high birth as an archangel was diminished due to his wrongdoings. He was born to the late Fox king and a woman that wasn’t his mate. An abomination in the Beast world.

She was confused. Beastmen were not able to sire offspring with women other than their mates. Then how was Xavier an exception? Did the people of his tribe even know about this? She wasn’t very sure. They would have never let him become a king if they knew.

Kalena had nothing to do with it. The reason she came here was completed. Xavier was Xenon’s reincarnation.

’Slip’ When she tried to return the threads back in their place, something slipped. Another thread was interlinked with Xavier’s. Curiosity made Kalena pick it up.

Her fists clenched around the threads when she read the name on it. Rosalie. The same Roselie that had destroyed her family, the person that made her father kill her mother. Why was her thread tied with Lord Xenon’s? They were not even married in their past lives, so why?

Something made her search through Roselie’s threads, and once she reached the final page, something inside her snapped. Her hands shook. Rosalie was reborn as none other than Lyra.

It seemed like Kalena was meant to see this. The anger she felt towards that wench grew exponentially. By killing Lyra, not only will she punish Adrian but also avenge her mother’s death. Fate worked in a distratous way.
