Beastmen: She Tames the Land-Chapter 77: Building the first structure (2)
Having come to a consensus, everyone was eager to try.
Visha thought about the huts they lived in before. She would need to show them a new way of building. She refused to live in a hut. She wasn’t an architect, but she knew a few things. Trial and error were always good.
Honestly, the reason she didn’t want to live in a hut was that it looked too fragile. She didn’t know the way to make the durable houses from mud or wattle and daub or whatever it was called. She had heard about it before, so she could only use her limited knowledge.
She didn’t want to use CP to get the blueprints because she didn’t have enough. She didn’t know when she would get another task that would reward her with CP.
"No, not on the ground," Visha instructed when she saw Cato and Fil laying the foundation logs. "We need to raise it. Build a platform of stone and wood. That way, when it rains, the bottom of the warehouse won’t be soaked by the water. It would also stop things from crawling in."
She showed them how to make a simple dovetail joint. The stone knife was very effective for this. There was also Krag, who would help out. Since he could retract his claws without shifting, it was useful.
For the roof, they made it slanted in order to allow the rain to run off.
Days turned into a week. Everyone moved like a well-oiled machine. The ironwood trees were already hard to cut down. It took multiple slashes of their claws to make it fall, and then shaping it into what they wanted.
The process was grueling. Everyone made sure to help, taking turns to survey the perimeter and build the warehouse. In addition to shaping logs, there was also collecting stone, clearing land, and weaving tangle-root, one of the things found while foraging, into strong cords to keep the beams together.
Seeing them work so hard, Visha was heartbroken. She knew this would happen when she asked them to try building. It was also the reason she didn’t want to ask them too early. But she also knew that no matter when she said it, they would happily take on the work, no matter how busy life would become.
It took more than a week and a half to complete the warehouse. It wasn’t a grand building. It was solid, functional, and completely foreign to the Beast Continent. When the final beam was placed, the pack stood back to take a look. Covered in sweat and dirt, the smiles on their faces showed how proud they were of what they had done.
Visha walked towards the warehouse and placed her hand on the doorframe.
[Task Complete: The Foundation]
[Reward: 100 EXP, 50 CP, Tribe wide buff ’Pride of Place’ activated]
Visha smiled happily when she heard the task was complete.
Before her smile could spread, she received another notification from the system. The smile on her face cracked.
She took a look at the next task and decided she needed to tell Uri and Xeno about the system.
The enthusiasm of the pack has reached yet another high. They circled their achievement like eager children.
Everyone had finished eating and was enjoying their leisure time. Xeno walked over to Visha, taking her hand in his. They walked away from the group, Uri following behind. They walked towards the edge of the meadow.
"What’s wrong, Shasha?" Xeno murmured. "You don’t feel right."
Visha faced both males, unsure of how even to begin. She took a deep breath and started talking before she could stop herself.
"There’s something I need to tell you." Her voice cracked. She cleared her throat. "I should have told you this a long time ago. But I didn’t know how to say it."
"You can tell us anything, you know that," Uri murmured in a low and soothing voice.
"I didn’t know how to tell you because I didn’t want you to think I was a monster." Visha watched their faces. "I’m not from the Beast Continent. I had never been. The world I come from is completely different from this..."
She took out the flashlight. "I’m sure you know this isn’t from this world. It’s something from my world. I had just arrived here when you saved me." Her eyes met Xeno’s. "The thing...the system...said it was a gift from an unnamed god...I still don’t understand why a god would gift me something like this."
"The reason I fainted when I accepted being a priestess is because of it."
Xeno growled at the mention of Visha fainting. Uri held his arm and shook his head.
"I was human when I came here...well, I think I was. The voice of my beast was always with me until I stopped listening. After I came here, it got stronger. The system...I’m still not sure what to make of it. It gives me tasks to do, and I get rewards. I always say ’its a priestess thing’, I know you don’t believe it, but you never say anything. So I’m confessing now. Also...it gave me another task."
Visha stood waiting for their reactions, with her head down. She was pulling at her fingers, gripping them, pressing the nail into the skin, anything she could do while waiting for their answer.
She didn’t hear any sound from the two, so she lifted her head. She looked at Uri. He was frowning. His face wasn’t one of disbelief. It looked as if he was analysing something. Turning to Xeno, she saw the confusion on his face. His brows were furrowed, but his attention was on her.
"Will it harm you?" Uri broke the silence. "You are our mate. Whether you are a monster or not. It would never matter. All we want to know is if you are in danger. Will it hurt you?"
Visha shook her head; she didn’t think it would harm her. So far, it has done nothing but help.
"It won’t hurt me."
She felt the tension she had carried diminish.
