Chapter 149: Resisting the bond

Everyone was still shaken by what happened at the pack bonding. None of them ever thought there would be a possibility of getting hurt. It was at this time that Uri, Xen,o and Visha truly revealed to the pack members the ’betrayal clause’ that the pack carried.

They informed them that betrayal may cost them their own lives. This is why they had always emphasised loyalty. They could see the dissatisfaction on their faces. They could see that some understood, but there were others who were indignant.

"Why didn’t you tell us from the beginning?" asked Vina.

"Would it have made a difference?" Visha’s voice was eerily calm. "If you have no intention to betray, then you won’t be affected."

"I’m glad it has that effect," Kael spoke out. "After what I experienced in the Tiger tribe, I’m glad to know I won’t face any betrayal in this pack. It makes me feel more at ease.

"Well, I don’t like it. Why should I be restrained like this?" Vina yelled.

"You can leave," Uri responded quickly. "We will not stop anyone who wants to leave this pack."

His eyes scanned all the people standing here. These people included those who had recently joined. They were standing towards the back, only listening.

"Those who wish to leave, I would be happy to send you on your way."

Some began to step forward to ask if they could leave. As Uri watched them walk toward him, he continued to speak.

"You may return to the embrace of the Beast God." He took out a knife from a satchel he carried on his person throughout the day.

Those who had begun to walk forward stopped abruptly. Their bodies shook slightly. They looked at Uri. When they saw how cold his eyes were, they knew he was not bluffing. He really would send them to the Beast God’s embrace.

Saying no more, he watched them return to the places they stood. His eyes flickered to Vina. "Would you still like to leave?"

Everyone’s gaze snapped towards her. Vina stood stiffly with her eyes wide. She felt others’ gaze on her, waiting for her decision. She shook her head frantically.

"Now that we have come to a conclusion, I want to say this. No one is allowed to approach the ones who have not completed the pack bond. Should you be approached, do not say anything." Uri’s voice held the authority of a leader.

The pack members felt it. Any act of defiance had melted away the moment he declared he would send them to the Beast God.

Visha and Xeno flanked Uri. They understood his approach. Even Visha, who was partially uncomfortable treating people she considered allies this way, understood that there are times when you need to be tough.

After speaking to the pack members, they moved on to those who have yet to accept a bond. They were placed in a large house designated for visiting persons. When they arrived, the divide was apparent. The remaining cheetah beastmen and females were sitting off to one side, while the ram beastmen were sitting to one side.

"I trust you are all comfortable," Visha said as she walked into the house.

She pretended not to see their disgruntled faces. There was nothing they could do at this point. They needed to learn. Since they decided to stay, they had to go through the ceremony.

Visha has always known she is a contradictory person. Her feelings for people come and go on a whim. Those she truly cares about, she will always tolerate. She will care about what happens to them. Others are more or less whatever she feels in that moment.

Xeno and Uri are probably the only people in this world who will know how truly detached she is from people. Simply because they can feel what she feels.

So, walking into the house, Visha, at this moment, was more annoyed seeing these people than anything else.

"We’ll ask that none of you go outside for the rest of the night. The rest of the bonding ceremony will begin just before first light." Visha’s words were casual. "I hope we can all become one pack soon."

The trio did not stay with the non-bonded for long. They only needed to let them know when the bonding would continue.

After leaving the guest house, Xeno sent a mind link to some of the pack members. He needed some beastmen to take a night watch. They expected people would try to leave.

This was one of the troubles they had expected. It was also the one they would deal with in the swiftest and cruelest manner. Betrayal within the pack was something they were able to control. Betrayal outside the pack was a calculated risk.

They could not allow those who were calm to want to leave. While they were not afraid of them knowing the pack bonding ceremony. They had so far not met any pack or tribe that could do the same. Coupled with those who had been approaching for information about the howl, they knew they could not afford to be soft.

Those who tried to leave tonight would not see the next sunrise. This was the burden they decided to carry for the pack. They would never let them know. The order was only to capture. As for what happened after, that would be their own secret. 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

The next day arrived without fanfare. As for those who were captured, there was no trace of them remaining. There were a few people who asked questions, but none were persistent in seeking an answer.

The ceremony began once again. This time, things went much more smoothly. The cheetah people did not give a fight. When it came to the ram beastmen, however, it was a different story.

The trio was always aware that the ram people had no intention of staying. They knew the consequences of the bond. They had given their warning, but they decided to stay. What happened after was not their issue.

What they never expected was that the rams decided to find a way to resist.
