Basketball System: Rebound of the Underdog-Chapter 339: Failed Recruitment
"That was great, grandma," Kai smiled as he stood from the chair, some jam still left on his lips.
Grandma Bingbing clicked her tongue and used her apron to wipe away the red syrup. "You still eat like a child."
Kai sheepishly scratched the back of his neck. "Technically, I still am a child."
Grandma Bingbing shook her head in amusement.
"Now, where are those onions you’re talking about?" he asked.
"By the sink," Grandma said. "I missed Richgate this morning. I just need you to deliver this to the Chen household."
Kai pursed his lips since he was going to see Coach Guanyu out of the court.
"Alright," he said, washing his hands and taking the sack of onions. "I’ll be back."
"Hmm," she hummed. "Be back soon."
Kai nodded, and with that, he started walking to Richgate.
He arrived in front of the village, and there he saw one of his greatest enemies—the guard.
The guard narrowed his eyes at Kai, walking out of his small dwelling and crossing his arms in front of his chest.
Kai smiled and showed him the sack of onions. "I just need to deliver these."
The guard clicked his tongue. "I could see that," he deadpanned.
Kai chuckled. "Come on. I’m not going to cause any trouble. I’m just taking this to the Chen household."
The guard pursed his lips and finally opened the gate for him, not saying anything more.
Kai smiled and walked towards the gate. However, he stopped when he heard the guard speak—just a small utterance.
"Congratulations."
Kai’s eyebrows raised in surprise as he looked at the guard.
"What was that?" he asked.
The guard sighed and looked away, not wanting to meet Kai’s gaze.
"Congratulations," he repeated.
"Represent Jilin City well in the Nationals."
With that, he went back to his guard house and acted like nothing even happened.
Kai couldn’t shake off his smile as he made his way inside the village. Although he had been there plenty of times, he still couldn’t help but feel amazed whenever he visited.
It strengthened his dream even further—so he can afford something like it for grandma and his future family.
Kai hummed a happy tune as he made his way to the Chen’s household.
It didn’t take him long to get there with his wide strides.
Then, he pressed on the doorbell.
After a few seconds, the door finally opened, and the man he anticipated stood right before him.
Coach Guanyu raised one eyebrow as soon as he saw Kai.
"Good morning, sir," Kai respectfully said, bowing his head in respect. "I’ve come to deliver the onions that my Grandma has prepared."
With that, he lifted his head, expecting a response. However, the older man continued looking at him without saying a word.
Instead, he narrowed his eyes—as if he was scrutinizing Kai.
Kai pursed his lips and scratched the back of his neck, feeling awkward under the man’s gaze.
Meanwhile, Coach Guanyu continued to observe the young player.
He was dressed down in torn shorts and an oversized shirt. Looking at him like this, he appeared like a normal high school student.
However, Coach Guanyu knew that there was something more than what meets the eye. This kid was a monster on the court.
"Umm, coach?" Kai asked, causing him to snap back to reality.
Somehow, being called ’coach’ actually felt nice to Guanyu. It felt as if he was meeting Max for the first time again.
Maybe, just maybe, he should have listened to Max and offered a recruitment for Kai.
Coach Guanyu knew that Kai rejected the Xing Stars’ and Feng Foxes’ offer; however, he knew, for a fact, that he would agree to his offer right away.
He unconsciously opened his mouth, wanting to recruit the young boy. However, he closed it when he realized that it was too late.
The Nationals were drawing near.

So, it couldn’t be now.
Maybe, next year.
With that, he took the sack of onions from Kai and grumbled a small ’thanks’ before closing the door right in front of his face.
Kai’s eyebrows raised in surprise, finding the interaction weird.
Nonetheless, he merely shrugged and went on his way.
He looked around the village once more when he heard familiar voices coming from afar.
Kai glanced to his right and saw that some kids were once again playing basketball on the expensive-looking court. Although he had played a game yesterday, he still had the urge to play today.
However, seeing that the kids were playing by themselves, he shrugged and was about to walk away.
"Is that onion boy?" one kid asked.
"No way—that is onion boy!" a young girl exclaimed.
Kai stopped walking once more when he felt several tiny gazes burning holes on his side.
He glanced once more to his right and saw that the group of children had stopped playing and was now looking at him with curiosity.
"He had a haircut! He doesn’t look like a creep anymore!"
Kai pursed his lips. "They’re definitely talking about me," he muttered.
He felt his heart race and continued walking. Somehow, after the game they had when he first transmigrated in this body, Kai felt a strange fear for the little gremlins.
"I need to get out of here quickly," he added.
"Yo, onion boy!" their leader exclaimed in a loud voice.
Kai stopped once more.
"Come here!" he exclaimed. "Play a game with us."
Kai sighed and shook his head. "No thank you," he said.
The kid, whom Kai recognized as the one who beat him in basketball back then, clicked his tongue.
"I heard that you’re going to the Nationals," he started off.
Kai tilted his head to the side on confusion. "How do you know that, kid?"
"Duh!" he exclaimed. "That’s because I’m also going to go to the Nationals when I enter high school!"
Kai chuckled in amusement. "Sure, kid. Keep dreaming."
"I will," the kid boasted, lifting his head high in the air.
"Now, come here," he continued to provoke Kai.
"Show me how an MVP plays."
